Why are we still tolerating smokers around the squares

I am sitting in my golf cart tonight park around the Brownwood Square enjoying the music when I am chased out by a cigar smoking neighbor. 98% of the people in the villages don't smoke so why do we allow such a minority of people affect our health and well being???

Papa_lecki 06-18-2024 06:42 PM

I just watched Bar Rescue, they rescued a bar in South Fla. They threw out a stat that only 15% of Floridians smoke.

Because smoking is legal in open spaces, whether by 2% of the people or by only one.

Loud music can cause hearing loss, certain food aerosols can trigger anaphylactic shock, fumes from gasoline engines can cause severe irritation to those with breathing issues - being out in public involves some risk, such is the cost of living in a free society.

DimondAngels 06-18-2024 06:46 PM

I am sure that the number is much lower in TV. A much more educated population.

I was there last night, no cigar.

barbara828 06-18-2024 07:07 PM

Love cigars - no I don't smoke them. Several close family members do.

Mleeja 06-18-2024 07:34 PM

I was driving down Enrique Drive last night. The driver in the cart in front of me was smoking a cigar. How dare he fowl the air behind him! I took matters into my own hands and passed his cart. Problem solved and we were all happy!

We (you) are lucky, Kentucky state (for example) still allows smoking (no ban in the state) so individual Kentucky cities and retail places (like bars) must individually ban smoking within that state.

vintageogauge 06-18-2024 07:42 PM

Body odor at the squares is more prevalent and more disgusting but it's their right to smell like a sewer.

Not a smoker, never have been, and hate to be "trapped" in an area of smokers; HOWEVER, I suppose the answer to your questions is that smoking in public areas, like shopping squares of towns and cities, is not against the law. Plus we are ALL free to walk away, drive your golf cart to a new location, leave completely, etc. Example, yesterday was enjoying a coffee with a friend on the patio of the local Dunkin' D, when a man sat down to enjoy smoking his pipe. Our ONLY choices were to go inside where smoking is not permitted, or leave completely. He had every right to sit on the patio and smoke. People at the public squares are "requested" NOT to smoke on the inner part of the square where dancers gather, but have every right to smoke outside on public land... or at least that's how I have always understood "smoking" areas all over the USA ? My most terrifying memories of childhood were being on flights with my parents (also non smokers) and thinking I was going to actually DIE from the smoke that always got even worse on the plane as soon as we finished meals. Those "meals" were served on REAL plates with REAL flatware, no plastic "sporks", but at age 8-10 was aware that as soon as we ate our food, the adults would be lighting their cigarettes... LOL. They might still smoke at public shopping squares here and everywhere, but at least not on planes anymore !

Well, I would counter that 0.5% (one half of one percent) of people in the USA consider themselves transgender ... have gender dysphoria. Why do we allow 0.5% of the population to change the culture ... men in women's sports ... drag queen story hour for kids ... demands by men to use women's locker rooms and rest rooms? It's insane / unnatural / perverted.

What's a little cigar smoke among neighbors who aren't trying to pervert the next generation?

What's amazing is that it is ridiculous and everyone with 10% of a brain knows it, but with the media driving the clown car, no one in authority dares speak out against it.

This guy spoke out against it.

With all the things going on in the US, a little cigar smoke should be the least of our worries. I smoke cigars but when someone is around me I relocate. I sit by the radio station in Sumter just to watch the people or listen to the music from r j gators.

So heartwarming to hear you are empathetic about your cigar smoke not affecting others!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you.:BigApplause:

I wish it was 98%. It's probably closer to 78%

These aren't Floridians. These are transplants from northern and other states so the percentage is higher

PGApromike 06-19-2024 06:08 AM

You lost me at 98%. You were sitting in your cart shows the "offender" was away from the crowd showing respect for the crowd. If you drive a gas cart to the square, it smells too so I guess the logic is ban all carts, cars, shuttles etc. See how this all gets out of hand in a hurry.
BTW, not a smoker but do respect their rights as well as yours.

I've been to the Squares many times, and have never smelled BO from anybody. I have smelled the stench of cigars wafting into the squares from cigars several times.

The really bad part about it is the smelly people must know they have an issue as they try to cover the stink with dime store perfume. Nothing like the scent of a flower on top of a dung heap.

I'm not and never have been a smoker but I really enjoy an occasional wif (small one) of someone lighting a cigarette with a match, a bit of cigar or pipe smoke is nice from time to time. I will say that there are some cigars that smell like they came from under that dung heap I mentioned above, pewee.

Jboduch 06-19-2024 06:30 AM

Wait until they legalize wacky tabacky.

Agreed. People have right to smoke, but I have a right not to. Smokers should not be allowed to walk around and through crowds or general public and smoke. I do not want to share their cigarette. They breath it in through a filter, I have to get a whiff of it not filtered. Then there is the butts all over the sidewalks, golf courses, and every where else they feel it is ok to discard their butt where ever they are. Poor employees of places that allow it. Rude and inconsiderate.

Ditto. Though I’ll take the sweet smell of cigar smoke over the stale smell of cigarette smoke any day. Now, I’m not on the dance floor, so perhaps I’m missing out on the BO. But I’ve definitely not encountered it previously.

do you have evidence of that 98%? I'd say it's an over the top assumption at best. Here's a reality it's far more than that. You're just not observant.

Black Beauty 06-19-2024 06:53 AM

wamley 06-19-2024 06:58 AM

Not a smoker, but that is where smoking is permitted, but not within the square itself.

Try the bleachers at Paddock Square.

asianthree 06-19-2024 07:06 AM

Coming from a tobacco grower family, I can say smoking was much more prevalent while in the south than when living in the north.
Dad smoked a pipe brings back memories of that cherry sweet smoke. Father in law smoked quality cigars. If one has ever been around a true Cuban it’s very unique.
I didn’t like to smoke pipe or cigars, but smoking cigarettes in very young teens in the south was pretty normal. Quit at 29 on an extremely large $$$$ bet, after I won the bet I never went back to that 2 pack a day habit.

So I don’t mind when someone smokes an expensive cigar, and sometimes cigarette smoke can trigger maybe just a moment.

But what I haven’t been able to tolerate or get used to is the lack of hygiene in both male and female, covered up by tons of cheap perfumes and cologne. It’s just gagging between the scent and the body order that they think is covering the smells.

MikeN 06-19-2024 07:07 AM

So we’re ok with legalizing cannabis but objecting to cigar smoke? While I enjoy a good cigar I never don’t around other people. It’s common courtesy that many people don’t have

Cuervo 06-19-2024 07:12 AM

Rodneysblue 06-19-2024 07:22 AM

I believe that if you are in the parking spaces you can smoke there just not on the sidewalk.

you tolerate it because it's a free country, & you also tolerate it because we do not impose our life styles on other people. ty. don't get me started.
