You heard it here, first. Ryder Cup Captain

The rumor is, Tiger Woods turned down the Captaincy for the upcoming Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in 2025.

The smart money is on Stewart Cink to be the Captain. The announcement will be tomorrow (July 9th).

As many know, Stewart's parents live on the Mallory Hill golf course (please don't ask where).

You had to remind everyone. You know there are a lot of Village sleuths with a lot of time on their hands.

Mr./Mrs. Cink....you might wanna close the blinds! :1rotfl:

Just curious why does it matter who the captain is?

ronda 07-08-2024 10:36 AM

Cink's

I can imagine that there would be people who would want to go past Stewart's house, in hopes of seeing him; but his parent's house?

People don't have anything better to do with their time?

Captain doesn’t play but he gets to pick part of the roster. Huge honor and responsibility

Everyone will know when Stewart brings the boys in for a practice round at Mallory. I understand there are lot of similarities between Mallory Hill and Bethpage Black.

The other possibility as captain, is reportedly Keegan Bradley. Keegan is a great guy. He lived in a trailer park in Bolton for a while, down the road from IGC. I don't see it, but you never know.

My favorite Keegan Bradley quote. After winning the PGA Championship, he was in the pre-tournament presser at The Masters the next year. He was asked, "what do you think your chances are, at winning another Major"? Bradley replies, "how hard can it be? I've won the only one I've ever played in".

Bradley is a Hopkinton MA native as well?
He would be a great addition as he was snubbed the last time

Having played Bethpage Black over 200 times and Mallory over 100 times, the only similarity is they both have 18 holes and are played primarily on grass. (Of course you already knew that 😂😂😂)

Woodstock, VT, actually. Moved to Hopkinton in HS. Lived in trailer in Bolton for a while, when his mother and father split up. Father is a PGA Professional, but had some issues back in the day.

Keegan's Aunt Pat is the person responsible for probably the #1 worst display of golf sportsmanship, in the history of the game.

(Sorenstam charges Americans with bad sportsmanship | The Independent | The Independent)

What most of the articles don't say, is Pat Bradley (& Patty Hurst) absolutely knew Annika wasn't away. They could have told Annika before she made the chip, but chose to keep their mouths shut and get 2 bites out of the apple.

I was going say exactly that, but Mallory has 27 holes and the grass is ..... well, different.

Coach K Sportsguy has Keegan Bradley as RC Captain on other thread...

That came from Bob Harig.

Up until Harig posted, the money was on Stewart Cink. Harig is well connected, so we'll see.

I'd love to see Keegan get it (only because there was no chance they'd pick David Duval), but Keegan presents some issues. He's young, he still plays the PGA Tour regularly and there's bad blood between Keegan & the JT/Fowler/Spieth gang. Keegan got screwed out of his spot on the last Ryder Cup, because Zach was weak and got ganged up on ... & paid the price.

My friend Mark Baldwin had a great take on it. Phil and Keegan are very good friends. He said if Keegan gets it, he then appoints Phil as Asst. Captain.

Keegan goes humming along as Captain, until he's sure he's going to qualify on points. Then he resigns to "concentrate of playing" and Phil becomes the Captain. I'd love to see that scenario!

I'm waiting to see RadarAtlas' post. I'm sure he's watching to see if NetJets flies Cink or Keegan anywhere tonight.

If Keegan gets the nod, I can't wait for his phone to Zach, informing him that he's not picking him as an Asst. Captain!

BrianL99 07-08-2024 03:32 PM

PGA just announced it. Keegan is in.

Very strange choice.

I have a lot local friends who know Keegan and they all say he's a great guy. I've heard he's not that well liked on Tour. I guess he can be a bit on the intense side, which may be what's needed at the Ryder Cup.

I hope he does well.

Mr. & Mrs. Cink are safe.

Keegan is very intense, and as a bonus he is a die hard Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots fan. I applaud the excellent Captains choice : )

Let's hope the selection gets controversial, with lots of arguments among the players, and splits the team into warring camps! ;)

I can give you a reasonably well-informed (but not necessarily factual) reason why Tiger is out.

Tiger is one of the main obstacles to the LIV/PGA truce. He's also extremely close with Seth Waugh, former CEO of the PGA of America. Seth got bounced from his position about a month ago. A number of rumored reasons, but he's basically a big-mouthed, empty suit (opinion).

Tiger was all set for the 2025 Captaincy, when Phil moved to LIV. The Captaincy carries with it, all sorts of public relations and preparatory expectations, that are of zero interests to Tiger. What I've read, was the Tiger was so tight with Seth, that he figured he could be a sort of an "Honorary Captain", show up when he felt like it and Seth would cover for him. With Seth gone and the mood at the PGA changing, Tiger decided it wasn't his time. He'd rather invest his time with the LIV/PGA story and see how much more money he and his adoring fanboys can extort from the PGA Tour.

In case no one has noticed, Tiger doesn't feel the need to exert energy on anything that doesn't benefit Tiger Woods' pocketbook, legacy or libido.

Keegan Bradley on the other hand would probably cut off a hand to see the Red Sox win the World Series and cut off a leg to solidify a USA win at the Ryder Cup.

The last time the PGA of America went out on a limb in choosing a Ryder Cup Captain, they got crucified (Tom Watson). They're went out on a limb of a different sort this time. Keegan came as a huge surprise to most everyone, but the consensus seems to be, he'll be great. Same as it was for Tom Watson. I hope the results are different.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

He graduated from St. John's in Queens.

Bradley is a great pick for Ryder Cup Captain IMHO. Perhaps he will be just what is needed for The United States Team. In recent years we have got our “butts” kicked when we had the most talent but consistently lost the cup.

Yeah, but they their teams have short, easy names to spell.

No sense complicating NY'ers lives. :D

BrianL99 07-09-2024 02:16 PM

Apparently Keegan was as surprised and shell shocked, as everyone else.

Seth Waugh said, when Keegan's name came up in discussions, it was all over. "It was a slam dunk".

Keegan's take is interesting, in he acknowledges there were other people in the mix who he looks up to, who were passed over.
