Try to always walk facing oncoming traffic

If you meet a bike (trike) in your car or cart coming at you in a neighborhood does it bug you? |

I would worry about having a head-on crash with a vehicle driving the wrong way in my lane. What would make things worse is I would have no idea what this vehicle was going to do... Is it going to stay in the lane and I need to swerve to avoid it or will it recognize its mistake and head over to the side of the road it should be using? Do I swerve to avoid it or stay straight to avoid it? The only safe thing for me to do is stop and let the wrong-way driver go around me - and that would bother me a lot. |

You are traveling forward, car is traveling in the same lane moving forward. On a curve neither has a chance to make correction safely. You have no shot of getting out of their way, and neither does the car, because you are both basically head on collision you doing 15mph and car doing 20, it’s a lose situation either way. If you are both traveling the same way, you have a fighting chance since you are both traveling close to the same mph, car has a better way to control situations with an oncoming cart or car. I am not a fan, recumbents are so low to the ground and they are so difficult to see. I get it. You have a flag, but it’s very tiny. We have ridden bikes for leisure and competition. Once we moved here we were done. People drive here who have low vision issues, distraction, medical issues and people who can’t get off their phones while they’re driving. Good luck to you. I hope you stay safe. |

Florida law considers bikes as legal vehicles, and as such they need to follow traffic laws. That INCLUDES driving on the correct side of the street. Anything else is INVITING head-on collisions. Who thinks that's a good idea? We too ride incumbent trikes. Yet we do it LEGALLY and safely. Working WITH traffic, with mirrors, and with flashing lights works very well for us. This stupidity changed the subject. A man was killed because he didn't see what was bearing down on him. I had a boyhood friend killed the same way, by a car that hit him from behind. Pedestrians: PAY ATTENTION. Walk facing traffic. See who is going to run you down. The difference between pedestrians and trikes facing traffic is that pedestrians can easily step aside. |

golf cart was on the wrong side of the road, driving "Westbound in the Eastbound lane" if the golf cart was electric, and within any normal age related hearing loss, the walker had no chance of survival. In this case, cart driver loses her driver's license for life! |

Seriously, it’s a retirement community near Ocala |
Very sad to see the fatalities that tragically impacts the lives of all involved.
People really need to be defensive on the streets and paths here. If impeding traffic, try to avoid road rage and get out of the way when safe to let them pass. A contributing factor is the infrastructure here in many cases is less than bike and pedestrian friendly. No bike lanes on roads that have no shoulder and tall vertical curbs. MMP's with no sidewalks to separate pedestrians from 20+ mph traffic. Some gate intersections even force pedestrians to walk in the street at MMP connections. |
Most bicyclists don’t abide by the rules of the road.
Ever see one stop at a stop 🛑 |
Yes, I have been really taken by surprise when rounding a corner and there is a bike coming right at me. I know it’s a MMP but it’s too dangerous because your bike is so low

When walking, I try to stay off the MMPs as much as possible - too many crazy cart drivers.

Because I'll give you one: "The standard size of a stop sign measures at 30 inches across with a white border of 20 mm (or a little less than an inch) around the sign1. The rumor that if you come to a “Stop” sign that has a white border around the edge, you don’t actually have to stop is false. Nearly every single stop sign has a white border around the edge, but you must stop at the sign and give way to traffic on a major road32." |

Let's not discuss cyclist's "rights" without discussing their responsibilities. |
Quote:
When people come to an intersection (whether they negligently plan to run the STOP sign or not), they look left. You would be on their right side. Boom. "Oh, I didn't see that woman riding the wrong way." Several other reasons already covered. Ride with traffic, and get some rear view mirrors on the bike and your helmet or attached to your glasses ! |

So sad to see these happening though. I have had close calls myself most of which could be prevented by a well placed curved mirror so that often speeding trafficking will slow down taking a blind curve. |
Quote:
.......All these fools in carts going over 20 MPH sometimes don't bother to slow down for curves and I can imagine that 2 of their wheels are LIFTING. And you add high levels of alcohol to the mix of curves and high speeds and the POLICE have FAILED in their duty to protect retired people in The Villages. I am sure that retired people die ever year because of these speed altered GOLF CARTS. |
