I saw this one online yesterday morning like the tragic death of the pedestrian near the Waterfront Inn. I assume it was near there.

When you live in a community of old people with all the frailties and maladies that effect the elderly, you definitely need to use situational awareness. Don't walk around totally oblivious to your surroundings as the consequences can be serious.

Hey, yesterday’s Sumter Landing death can be blamed on a 23 year old driver hitting an elderly person. It isn’t always the old who are to blame.

I walk my dog a lot of places, but MMPs are not one of them.

We ride recumbent trikes quite a bit, in the neighborhood streets I like to ride on the wrong side so I can see oncoming traffic. I'm confident that's not how the law reads but these short trikes are easy to lose sight of from a car. We have flags but it's still an uneasy feeling to have a car sneak up on you.

If you meet a bike (trike) in your car or cart coming at you in a neighborhood does it bug you?

Haven’t experienced that but would be surprised and think “what the hell are you doing?”

It would bother me a lot.

I would worry about having a head-on crash with a vehicle driving the wrong way in my lane. What would make things worse is I would have no idea what this vehicle was going to do... Is it going to stay in the lane and I need to swerve to avoid it or will it recognize its mistake and head over to the side of the road it should be using? Do I swerve to avoid it or stay straight to avoid it? The only safe thing for me to do is stop and let the wrong-way driver go around me - and that would bother me a lot.

Recumbent scares the _______ out of us. First not sure why you are riding on wrong side. Death wish, or want to visually see what possibly is going to hit you.

You are traveling forward, car is traveling in the same lane moving forward. On a curve neither has a chance to make correction safely. You have no shot of getting out of their way, and neither does the car, because you are both basically head on collision you doing 15mph and car doing 20, it’s a lose situation either way.

If you are both traveling the same way, you have a fighting chance since you are both traveling close to the same mph, car has a better way to control situations with an oncoming cart or car. I am not a fan, recumbents are so low to the ground and they are so difficult to see. I get it. You have a flag, but it’s very tiny.
We have ridden bikes for leisure and competition. Once we moved here we were done. People drive here who have low vision issues, distraction, medical issues and people who can’t get off their phones while they’re driving.

Good luck to you. I hope you stay safe.

Where going to go when there curb? IMO those bikes are dangerous cause you just can’t jump off out of road. You’re stuck in seat at bumper level. Not mention there twice as hard to see especially in jacked up trucks and SUV.

If you meet a bike (trike) in your car or cart coming at you in a neighborhood does it bug you?

YES! "it bugs" me. Not only is it ILLEGAL, it is STUPID and SUICIDAL!
Florida law considers bikes as legal vehicles, and as such they need to follow traffic laws. That INCLUDES driving on the correct side of the street. Anything else is INVITING head-on collisions. Who thinks that's a good idea?

We too ride incumbent trikes. Yet we do it LEGALLY and safely. Working WITH traffic, with mirrors, and with flashing lights works very well for us.

This stupidity changed the subject. A man was killed because he didn't see what was bearing down on him. I had a boyhood friend killed the same way, by a car that hit him from behind. Pedestrians: PAY ATTENTION. Walk facing traffic. See who is going to run you down. The difference between pedestrians and trikes facing traffic is that pedestrians can easily step aside.

walker was walking against the traffic "Westbound in the Eastbound lane"

golf cart was on the wrong side of the road, driving "Westbound in the Eastbound lane"

if the golf cart was electric, and within any normal age related hearing loss, the walker had no chance of survival.

In this case, cart driver loses her driver's license for life!

Very sad to see the fatalities that tragically impacts the lives of all involved.

People really need to be defensive on the streets and paths here.

If impeding traffic, try to avoid road rage and get out of the way when safe to let them pass.

A contributing factor is the infrastructure here in many cases is less than bike and pedestrian friendly.

No bike lanes on roads that have no shoulder and tall vertical curbs.

MMP's with no sidewalks to separate pedestrians from 20+ mph traffic.

Some gate intersections even force pedestrians to walk in the street at MMP connections.

As in hit from behind, either the person walking was on the wrong side of the road, or the cart was driving on the wrong side of the road. We can leave age out of this for the time being.

Yes, as you must have read, my response was to a post inferring that it’s because we live in a plus 55 neighborhood so expect it. It isn’t always age that causes these accidents just like the pedestrian hit at Sumter Landing proves.

Uh-huh. Source, please.

Because I'll give you one:

"The standard size of a stop sign measures at 30 inches across with a white border of 20 mm (or a little less than an inch) around the sign1. The rumor that if you come to a “Stop” sign that has a white border around the edge, you don’t actually have to stop is false. Nearly every single stop sign has a white border around the edge, but you must stop at the sign and give way to traffic on a major road32."

Unfortunately, at least here in TV, the cyclists focus on THEIR privileges and rights, but NOT their responsibilities. This would include stopping at stop signs, yielding at yield signs, and not treating a pack of 20 as if they were one entity among other things. When challenged on this site, they often reply that carts and cars do the same thing. A case of 2 wrongs making a right???? The other excuse is that it is inconvenient because they would have to take their foot out of their toe clips to come to a stop. AWW, too bad baby. I have to stop at a stop sign, even when it is "inconvenient", and it is among the responsibilities of a cyclist as well.

Let's not discuss cyclist's "rights" without discussing their responsibilities.

Noooooooooo. Riding the wrong way is even more dangerous than with traffic.
When people come to an intersection (whether they negligently plan to run the STOP sign or not),
they look left.
You would be on their right side. Boom. "Oh, I didn't see that woman riding the wrong way."

Several other reasons already covered. Ride with traffic, and get some rear view mirrors on the bike and your helmet or attached to your glasses !

I often walk on the wrong side facing traffic. When I ride my E-bike (I am in no hurry) and when I see a car or fast modified golf car in my rear view mirror, I pull way over on the edge of the road and stop. Of course. I also take only low traffic back streets wherever I go. I would NOT ride a 3 wheel bicycle on the wrong side of the road because that is too much to expect the oncoming drivers to move to the middle of the road to accommodate YOU. I think that you need to rethink your strategy. Maybe do what I do and pull over and stop while riding in the legal direction.

We do not have the facts in the Villages pedestrian death.

So sad to see these happening though.

I have had close calls myself most of which could be prevented by a well placed curved mirror so that often speeding trafficking will slow down taking a blind curve.

I agree. I pointed out the jacking up of the speed of golf carts and how dangerous it is. Also, there is the fact that the residents in the carts going 20 MPH are ENTITLED to POLICE PROTECTION from those golf carts set up to SPEED. I got derided by various posters for saying that I have seen golf carts go by my house at 40 MPH. Yet I remember reading a post in TOTV several years ago by a cart owner that bragged that he had his golf cart "souped up" and capable of 60 MPH.
.......All these fools in carts going over 20 MPH sometimes don't bother to slow down for curves and I can imagine that 2 of their wheels are LIFTING. And you add high levels of alcohol to the mix of curves and high speeds and the POLICE have FAILED in their duty to protect retired people in The Villages. I am sure that retired people die ever year because of these speed altered GOLF CARTS.

A funny thing is if you are doing the right thing and walking "facing traffic", you might get hit by the poster that rides his 3 wheel bicycle ALSO "facing traffic". I would suggest that anyone walking or riding a bicycle get a rear view mirror that can attach to their sunglasses or to their helmet-------------so that they can ALWAYS see what is behind them. Because we have old people (with a hobby of drinking) and local POLICE that allow this crap of raising the golf cart speeds.
