O"Shucks

I like to see a local establishment do well.

O"Shucks presented a good time in a Humble environment. They served a great fried shrimp dinner and other items. Just went tonight and primarily noticed very few patrons.

Ordered our usual fried shrimp and it was memorable in a bad way. The shrimp were half the size and rubbery. Celery sticks served were brown. Brought the issue up and were told, I never eat it and it comes in a bag.

Not worth the effort to speak with management and will simply remove from our list.

I haven't been there for awhile, but I only go for the raw oysters. They really should pave their parking lot.

FloridaGuy66 09-03-2024 09:41 PM

I have enjoyed probably 80% of my visits there. Mostly stick to the fish n chips on Fridays. The fish and the fries are both excellent every time. Have had the burgers there too which are decent. Pricing is very good.

I don't expect most places to be great every time. They're definitely more consistent than most for a local restaurant like that.

Stay away from outside seating area. The mosquitoes out to get you

collie1228 09-04-2024 11:48 AM

It's always been a tiny dive bar with a pretty good, but limited, seafood menu (burgers were pretty good too). Shouldn't be surprised that a dive bar can fall down.

I've eaten outside maybe 15 times there. Never saw a mosquito.

Well we got over 25 bites each, when we mentioned it to the waitress she handed us a bug spray to spray ourselves.

Food was good but kind of lost my appetite.

The outside area borders a garbage dump

I believe you, but it sounds like you went once and you're claiming that it's always like that? I was bit by a dog once at Gators in LSL on the patio but I'm not going to start posting that you're likely to be bitten by dogs if you go there.

If it was not common to have mosquitoes do you think they would be handing us big spray? The waitress said this common during the season.
Do you think she was lying?

ithos 09-05-2024 05:38 AM

$1 drafts may be a factor why the parking lot stays full most of the time.

Whoaboy 09-05-2024 06:01 AM

Mosquitoes are bad in their outdoor seating area. Get bitten every time I sit there.

Sometimes. It depends on the time of day — and season — and if it has been rainy.

My experience: dusk is worse than well before dusk, when we have not experienced mosquitos.

Also, when driving by the restaurant recently, I have observed fewer cars that I assume means fewer customers.

spinner1001 09-05-2024 06:32 AM

Does anyone know how the planned Wawa’s location affects the O’Shuck’s property? I recall reading about a Wawa’s entrance on 301, and well as on 44.

One bad meal and they're off the list forever. Tough crowd!

Next time make sure you comply with their indoor dining dress policy.

We sat outside and were attacked by hungry man-eating flies.

We’ve been there many times and really like the food. Why come on here blasting the place when admittedly you didn’t even speak to a mgr?? Not fair to the establishment.

Mrs S 09-05-2024 07:15 AM

Still in business?

We drove by there one afternoon and didn’t see any cars in the parking lot and it looked abandoned.

I believe in free speech. Negative restaurant reviews are always offset by positive reviews, if deserved. But, any review that contains accurate and detailed information, is useful.

True it ain't the"RITZ" but good food and friendly service is the key to any restaurant .We like it a lot.

BlackHarley 09-05-2024 08:07 AM

Yeah it looks kinda dumpy, but has a friendly staff and decent food. The oyster trays are reasonably priced and delicious. This is a family run restaurant which is rare around here. For each complainer you'll find plenty of happy patrons.

We've sat outside every time we have gone and have never had a bug problem. We usually go around 2 PM so that probably makes a difference.

Yes it's a real dive bar of a place but we have always liked the food and the prices.

This thread reminds me that we have to go back.

We've had mixed results the several times we've been there. The food is mostly good, haven't had the issues with the mosquitos sitting outside but I can believe it based on our subdivision bordering a large swampy nature preserve, our issues have been with the service. Specifically, the last two times we went we sat outside both times, had two different waitresses and the service was terrible, seriously bad. It's like we didn't exist for the most part. What was weird is they seemed to be servicing the tables around us just fine, don't know why we were different? We haven't been back but probably will go at some point, maybe.

Took me a long time to go to O" Shucks, but after some good notes from friends gave it a try and absolutely loved the fried shrimp. No complaints regarding that menu item until this time. The item was a large shrimp platter, well prepared. This time it was a crispy small shrimp on a platter that looked half empty. It was rubbery and tasteless for ~$17. The celery stalks were brown and soggy. The waitress comments were that she didn't eat celery and they use whatever came out of the bag. Regarding the shrimp she says that is the kitchen responsibility.

My observation is that no one cared and that any amount of complaining would not ensure that it was improved. If the kitchen downsized the shrimp and doesn't care, then I will care and make my decision that "one bad meal" wasn't a mistake but was acceptable to them.

Supposedly, the new WaWa being planned for 44 & 301 is likely going to seek to buy out the Aw Shuks property to use as a back entry/exit.

Here's the plan, looks like they stay.

I am sorry you had a bad meal and a server who didn't give a ****, that's no fun. However, both you and I have had good food and good service there. So either the place has gone downhill or you happened to get unlucky on that visit. My point was that it's not completely fair to write the place off based on a single visit. 100% perfection is the goal but it's a pretty high bar and sometimes people have bad days (I know I have!). In baseball you get three strikes before you're out, right? Maybe the place has gone to hell but I think we need a little more research to know for sure :)

Joe

All I can say after 1 visit is, "EW!" One health inspector visit away from being shut down. If you like greasy fried food, this is your place.
