Received non renewal letter from Progressive today. Reason given ….due a reduction in our hurricanes exposure.
Included was information about Loggerhead Insurance.
Current expires in January and will receive quote from Loggerhead.

If you wouldn’t mind, age of home/roof, how many years with Progressive?

We bailed on Progressive six months ago, after a long “relationship”. Car home golf cart for 6+ years. Every year, increases. Try to be loyal but no more. Read that insur companies watch those who blindly continue to pay, and continue to raise believing these customers don’t look around and shop. We never had even one claim.

No more for us. We went to Allstate and saved $700 year.
Bye Progressive. But all insurance companies no doubt do same,,,, Can’t win.

I called the Villages Insurance the other day to ask them if Progressive was going to drop us in the spring (our renewal date). They consulted the list of people who were being dropped and said “yes”. I then asked them why they didn’t contact us as soon as they knew. They indicated that they weren’t telling people until 3 months in advance. I expressed my displeasure at not being informed when they knew. They didn’t care. Sigh ….

Started with ASI in 2005, stayed with Progressive after their purchase of ASI.

Welcome to the club, we got the same non renewal letter from Farmers for our policy that runs through November. Be prepared for a significant premium increase and very few companies even willing to give you a quote. Our house was built in 1996, but is in outstanding condition, got a brand new roof last February, and has a current wind mitigation report. This homeowners problem is very real with no evident solutions in sight.

At least you got few months to figure it out. Triple (piece of ____) a sent me letter 6 weeks before policy ran out saying insurance was dropped so to too old roof. Now I had to get new roof and insurance when there was no shingles available. Which I turn if I didn’t have insurance before it ran out I would now be considered high risk and really take it up the ___. All for doing nothing wrong never late paying.

If I was you I’d start getting quotes now and get quote from village ins at mulberry.

Insurance companies are an investment vehicle for their investors. Their loyalty is to their investors, not their customers. Customers are a liability.

I’ve always had USAA. Will be paying $1475 a year. Catastrophic sinkhole coverage was standard. Fixable sinkhole coverage was an extra $225 a year. We need flood insurance, until FEMA updates their maps anyhow, that’s $1400 a year. There was 2 choices. FEMA, or Neptune, which was actually $75 more. And being a private company, no guarantee they can stay in business and pay out. Hope this helps.

Old news. Been going on for a couple years now. Increases partly due to hurricane Rick, partly due to greedy residents who wanted free roofs.

The customers and their $$$ are food for the insurance companies and stockholders

Can you just get homeowners liability insurance and not get coverage on the home?

I don’t want to get sued if someone falls and gets injured but I might be willing to take my chances on property damage to the house.

I wonder if a member only co-op type of homeowners insurance would work? Each claim could be looked at for validity. Members would agree to only ask for legitimate repairs and not damage due to neglect and lack of maintenance or upkeep

We were dropped by Progressive in the spring. Our home was not ten years old. We were told they’re pulling out of Florida.

I wouldn't buy insurance from Allstate if it was free. When they pulled out of Texas, they showed up at the CLOSING of my last house to inform me that they wouldn't be insuring the house they'd already signed onto. They brought some no-name outfit to take over. This was on a house 80 miles from the coast that had survived THREE cat-5 hurricanes in the past 10 years with NO DAMAGE. And this was a customer who had given Allstate ALL his insurance business for over 40 years, with only one claim -- from a TORNADO in TULSA.

If the idiots would just look at their own data, they would discover that all of that catastrophic damage they are running from occurs within 10 miles of the coast. A Cat 5 is a Cat 1 by the time is crosses 80 miles of land. They might also discover that a guy bright enough to pay his bills on time for 40 years doesn't buy a house that has to be rebuilt every decade. They might discover that they could make a killing if they'd quit insuring deadbeats and idiots on the beach, and quit selling full replacement cost insurance to the rest for the only part of a house exposed to a simple hail storm.

There is plenty of stupidity to go around in this stupid Florida insurance crises, but most of it can be laid at the door of intensely stupid insurance companies like Allstate.

I have flood on my home in Cape Cod (MA) try TFIA The Flood Insurance Agency- they write through Loyds of London. Some quotes were $10-20k I pay $2200/year. Not sure if the will cover in FL but worth a call!

I’ve used the same State Farm agent for 30 years . I bought a new house here in December 2022. My insurance is only $1400 a year! I called her to make sure that was correct. In Fort Lauderdale was $6000 a year.

Fewer and fewer insurance companies are choosing to do business in Florida, both because of raapidly increasing costs due to ever worsening storms due to climate change. But the whole roof thing is a loophole in Florida's regulatory process that allowed people to turn minor roof probelms into a new roof under insurance. Florida basically goves them that option with littl tweaking needed. Its been a sore spot forever. There have been attempts to chnge that, but ot my knowledge it has never happened. The companies and their hundreds or thousands of employees need to remain a viable company. And no one can disagree that the summers are getting hotter and storms - all over the country - are getting more severe and more coommon.

When we lived in a village above 466, neighbors saw our old roof and bragged about how they got a new roof for free so thats what we should do. It was simple for us. The roof was old and we werent going to play games. All these free roofs have been a real factor in increases for everyone. In the end, there are no free roofs, we all pay.

Not sure how umbrella policies work, but you could look into an Umbrella policy.

My thoughts as well since umbrella policies are typically through the car insurance underwriter - my experience anyway.

My house is quite similar, Bogie. So far I have Cabrillo and happy with them. Just an alternative if you want to look into them.

How do you self-insure your home?

The stock market has tainted so many businesses for passable pricing. Don't you know everyone needs a 10% cut of everything you do or purchase? I personally think the market is the downfall of this country.

You can't unless your mortgage is paid off.

I don't understand why insurance companies are not reaching out to people in areas like TV where the risk of hurricane damage is so much lower than all the homes within a few miles of the coast. You would think that these policies would be used to offset the risk with other policies in real hurricane areas? Or are they just getting out of the state completely?
