Good Samaritan, Bad Samaritan.

I went to a local Publix to get a prescription as well as a few groceries. I had maybe three bags of items as I was leaving. I got home but could not find the Publix pills. Checked the golf cart and the various bags but could not find the pills. I had returned the grocery cart and left the golf cart unattended.

I soon received a call from a Good Samaritan who said she had the pills and would like to arrange to give them to us.

I got her location and drove to her place which was on the opposite side of Publix from we live. You have to turn right from the Publix to get to her place .

She came out of her house to greet me carrying the Publix bag. It is one of those colored cloth ones. And in it were the pills and the various bags the Pharmacy gives you along with the instructions.

She said she found the bag in the street and turned right to get home. I had turned left and there was no practical reason the green bag would be on the opposite direction to the one I took.

I figured that a Bad Samaritan had taken the green bag out of the golf cart while I was returning the shopping cart . And then threw away the pills when he or she or they did not have any use for the bag they had snatched while my back was turned.

In the almost twenty years I have lived in the Villages I have never had someone steal stuff out of my golf cart while I was returning the shopping cart .

If I lost possession our any of our medications, I would get them replaced by the pharmacy, even if I had to have them reissued by our doctor. Just my opinion.

I checked the pills to see if they had been tampered with and they looked fine.

I think the thief had grabbed what he or she could get while my back was turned. He/she got the green bag. It was what they could get in a small amount of time without making their actions look suspicious.

True .

There was a man in the passenger seat of a golf cart about ten feet from where I had been parked. He would have seen what happened unless he was taking a nap . Or ....

I do wish Publix would get some parking lot cameras, or, at least put up some signs saying the parking lot is being monitored even if that is a bluff.

Even if the cameras do not work they do deter as the thieves do not know that.

Bogie Shooter 10-28-2024 09:18 AM

Well, I’m just not sure about this.

Boomer 10-28-2024 09:33 AM

Tal, I am glad you got your pills back.

But, I must say that it is not a good idea to leave a bag of prescriptions out of your sight in a public place.

Even in a parked car with locked doors, I don’t leave a bag of prescriptions in sight.

Anyway, it’s good that it all worked out.

I'm not either. Hence, I would err on the side of caution and get the meds replaced.

They were in a green Publix bag along with two much bigger carrying cases. These were in the golf cart . From now on though I will keep the prescriptions on my person. You could not tell what was in the bags without opening them up.

No. But maybe if they did have them a Publix employee will take a look at yesterday at around 2:30 PM.

Don't be silly. What could go wrong Dr. JECKYL? 🙂🤢👹

JGibson 10-28-2024 10:56 AM

If it was a controlled substance the pharmacist may have not refilled it until the following month. Just keep that in mind.

Decadeofdave 10-28-2024 11:03 AM

The pills are very distinctive and dissolve quickly when in the mouth.

I do not think they were tampered with but will check each one I use .

And have the Good Samaritan's but not that of the pill thief. Even though he/she or they were just looking for a free dinner or lunch.

Not familiar with the letter of the law, but I'm pretty sure as long as you return the original pills, they would replace them as an even swap. Whether or not you would have to pay again, IDK, after all, it's not Publix's fault.

The pills are fine. Tampering with pills would be a very serious crime. I do not think any average Villager would alter medications and then drop them on the street with all the personal information there . Unless there were a lot more to the story. I do not have good reason to be paranoid.

PersonOfInterest 10-29-2024 04:49 AM

Maybe while you were returning the cart a Bird or Squirrel got into the cart and took the bag and then dropped it.

Remembergoldenrule 10-29-2024 05:46 AM

First, I hope person was Good Samaritan
Second I would never meet a stranger anywhere but public place.
Third if you have a back of hair feelings about this person don’t put anything from them in your mouth. Remember the Tylenol poisoning from the 80’s.

MikeN 10-29-2024 05:52 AM

And you don’t know that a”bad” person stole from your golf cart now. Wind, traffic and other factors could explain why your light cloth bag was off route. Be thankful someone was considered enough to care and make things right

I had that golf cart door shut when leaving and the bag was found at least 30 feet from where I had turned to go in the other direction. It might have been further away when the Good Samaritan picked them up .

Funny. But I almost always close the door on the golf cart's passenger side when I have bags of groceries.

I agree, very improbable the "good" seminarian tampered with the medication, but, as they say, you never know !

So, that would imply that this incident was a whole elaborate scheme to poison him ??????????? I doubt that.

There is one other possibility. A kleptomaniac - that steals for the thrill of stealing.

Could be. I do not see someone like that worrying about their fingerprints on the pill bottle or on the bags. I would have called the police if I saw any indication of medicine tampering.

Fenster 10-29-2024 11:56 PM

By the way…

I was in Publix last week and some shopper left her pocketbook in her cart. I watched it for a minute or two and then notified a Publix employee.

Please don’t leave your bag behind. There are many thefts of these bags.

Way to go.

Taltarzac725 10-30-2024 01:44 PM

I went shopping again at a Village's Publix today. I have been to a number of them over the 19.5 years we have been here and lived about 1500 feet from one that was located on US 19 in Palm Harbor, FL.

One or two or more people looking to steal stuff is not going to deter me in the least.

I hope the Good Samaritan reads Talk of the Villages.
