NEW Movie Club Being Formed
3 Attachment(s)
Welcome all to a new Villages Movie Club - "Return to the Bijou". These movies will focus on good old entertainment from the 30s thru the 50s. We'll have a monthly meeting with a main feature, cartoon(s), previews, short comedy, serial chapter, newsreel, etc. Since we're new, we need to hear from you folks what titles of movies you would like to see, or type of movie. Action, Comedy, B programmers like Boston Blackie, Tarzan, Jungle Jim, or stars like William Powell, Ann Southern, etc. The Entertainment Committee will be looking to see how much interest there will be in this club, so respond, please. Naturally, you will need an active Villages ID and be a resident or guest. Let me hear from you. Craig Poorbaugh, 724-423-8526 or [email]craigmoviedad@yahoo.com.

No doubt this will be a popular club. My fav from that era…anything Shirley Temple! Definitely interested.

This is somewhat before the time-period quoted in the OP, but has the possibility of including silent movies been discussed? They're fascinating in a lot of ways: the acting for sure is a lot different than that in sound pictures but it is also interesting to see how the technology developed from the very earliest short movies to what we have today.

Do people know what movie you are to show prior to the meeting?
What time of day are you going to do this? Where are you going to have this meeting? I’m interested depending on the answers to these questions. |

When the Villages gives final approval for the club to go forward, and they and I land on a place for the show, I'll email everyone interested. So if you can give me your email address, I'll put you on the list. OK? Thanks, Craig |
The movie club sounds great!
Somewhat related, if you like old time radio shows you can go to Great Detectives of Old Time Radio on YouTube, they have thousands of radio programs there. |

Just a suggestion……PM the email address. :)

Back in the day (late 50s to very early 60s, maybe?) There was a weekly radio program with themes similar to the original Twilight Zone TV shows. I can't recall the name of the series and Google was singularly unhelpful. "The Outer Limits", maybe? But radio was called "theatre of the mind" for a very good reason. You didn't need a TV. You just listened to the narrative and your mind chipped in by supplying mental images far more lurid than anything you could have seen on the (then) black and white TV screens). I recall one episode; a woman had lost a family member and enlisted the aid of a sorcerer to bring him back to life. It was some time after the funeral when things finally fell into place. The woman was in her house at dusk. You could hear faint footsteps outside; a sort of crunching like very slow walking on gravel as I recall, which got gradually louder--and louder--and louder. Inside the woman was panicking, not knowing what to do. Finally the footsteps stopped and there was a knock on the door. After a long pause the voice of the woman shrieked "I want him dead. Dead! And at peace". The show ended with that line. |
