Is it stupidity or indifference?

While driving yesterday morning over the Sumpter Landing bridge, I passed a lady driving a golf cart who was holding a tablet on the steering wheel as she was typing on it. Needless to say she was swerving from one cart lane to another as she drove.
Stupidity or indifference? Your thoughts please.

Stupidity

CoachKandSportsguy 11-21-2024 10:48 AM

When you pass very slow drivers on the highway, check out what they are doing. . Most are looking at a cell phone, one person was watching a movie going 30 mph below the speed limit at rush hour on a two lane highway side. .

I passed on person typing on his phone, then in the rear view mirror, watched him drive completely off the road, hit a small tree, jerk the wheel left and back into his lane, but almost cross into the oncoming lane. Then he pulled over. .

Many reasons are personal, but many don't realize the risk until the risk happens, and risk happens fast. .
another example of it works until it doesn't. .

Both, plus it’s an addiction. Why can’t people enjoy life without being constantly glued to a mobile device?

Both?

I walk a lot on the MMPs and occasionally encounter an older gentleman on a bicycle, with his cell phone on some kind of holder on the handle bars. He gives the phone most of his attention, glancing up and around at rare intervals. I've had to warn him with a loud "heads up!" shout one time as he swerved directly at me. It got his attention; he avoided hitting me.

Haven't seen him in 3-4 months.

I saw one driving while holding a full wine glass in a golf cart a week ago. See people smoke in one hand cell phone in the other while driving with the last one making a left turn. Sad

Saw a cart about two years ago moving at about walking speed on an MMP. One driver, no passengers. Had one of those white canes that vision-impaired people use bungee-corded on the back of his cart.

True story.

bsloan1960 11-21-2024 04:54 PM

I think a lot of people view the carts as toys- and as such assume there is little danger in operating them.

It's lack of spacial awareness. Some people are just incredibly myopic. They were never taught to pay attention to their surroundings, that the world revolved around them, and so it's everyone else who has to watch out for them, not the other way around.

Feel free go go all "New York Attitude on them and yell "hey whdddya think yer doin ya nutball, git over to the left and stay here, meaball or i'mm pop you one hard when your not looking."

when they're next to you with the window open and music blaring, just open your window and sing your favorite tune as loud as you can, or show them how you can sing their tun better than they can..

MorTech 11-22-2024 12:28 AM

Maybe she is just exceptionally skilled and aware of what is around her.

That’s crazy! Golf carts passing each other going opposite directions on the bridge, with high concrete curbs on each side and inches of space on each side—that’s white knuckle territory. At least on the multimodal paths, a cart can swerve onto the grass if necessary. I’m surprised we don’t read of more carts hitting the curb on the bridge and flipping.

asianthree 11-22-2024 05:35 AM

Stupidity or Indifference…Neither

Its age, some no longer have all facilities of thinking clearly to drive cars, or carts, or manage in their own home.

An older lady at Fresh Market, Tuesday not only had difficulty navigating people, Paying for her purchase, thankfully an employee took groceries to car.

Backing out she ran into the curb with bushes 7 times, before finally driving completely over and getting the frame of her car stuck. Still holding her coffee in her hand got out to see why her car wasn’t moving anymore.

So just a human who no longer should be out and about by themselves, with no one to point out the issues at hand. Then again I wasn’t drive a car, or cart trying to watch if someone was texting, drinking, smoking. I observed walking out to my cart, hoping she wouldn’t run someone over.
Sheriff arrived, hopefully had car towed, and got her home safely.

On a trip between Richmond and Brownwood, I saw a lady driving the other way with an infant in her lap

That’s why we have horns. Let the mentally challenged know they are doing something unacceptable. Mine is very loud!

Cuervo 11-22-2024 07:48 AM

Just be happy she was driving a golf cart and not a car.
I see people all the time with one hand on the wheel of their car and the other holding a phone to their ear and you can easily see they are not totally focused on driving.

Totally agree, much the same a many teens, talking, texting, driving, eating, listening to music, just as much distraction from DRIVING as possible. "TECH" will one day be the leading cause of death. JUST saw a man walk right into a stone wall around a fountain, bad fall that could have been tragic, but too busy watching his phone SCREEN, maybe posting pix of the villages on his Facebook ? Hard to know.

It's a little of both. Mostly, people seem to be self absorbed and entitled. I was almost hit by a golf cart who ran a stop sign as I was turning into his street. When I confronted him, he just said "Are you done now?" They just don't care.

Sumter as in Fort Sumter. Not Sumpter as in sump pump.

Messing with her GPS possibly? Not that that's any less dangerous....

When I ride a bike I want my senses laser focused on what is around me. The point of riding a bike or walking or jogging is to be aware of your surroundings. You do not have that intimate feeling when driving in an automobile.
