Hello everyone,

We are thrilled to join this forum and become part of this vibrant community! My name is Ed, and my wife, Keely, and we will be moving into our new home in Shady Brook in January. We're excited to get to know everyone and participate in community activities.

A little about us: We are from Generation Jones (tail end Boomers and GenX) and both native Floridians. I am a recently retired Director of Operations who enjoys music, hanging with friends and parties. Keely is an accountant who enjoys spending time with the kids and wants a pet capybara. We both enjoy parties, sitting at a bar to talk and meeting new friends and Patches and Sammie, our cat and dog. We're looking forward to exploring the area and meeting new friends.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any tips for newcomers or if there's a community event we should attend. We're eager to contribute and be active members of this wonderful neighborhood.

Best regards,
Ed and Keely

Welcome! Since you are moving into a new area, meeting and making friends will be easier. I suggest leaving an invite on your block’s neighbors doors that you are holding a meet and greet cocktail hour at your house sometime the first 3 months. Set up a WhatsApp group for your neighborhood to invite and text your neighbors in the future. At the party have your wife invite ladies to form a monthly luncheon where each member chooses the restaurant you’ll hold your luncheon. Create and form other groups (create separate WhatsApp groups for those) for playing cards weekly, pickleball, golf, guys movie night (held ant members homes) etc. This is the best things we did. We have 23 ladies in our luncheon group and our neighborhood block is very close and we watch out for our neighbors.

Welcome! We are going to be neighbors. We live in Moultrie Creek but we are extremely close to Shady Brook. I jokingly say they should call our area Shady Creek.

Like you, we are the same age and enjoy many of the same things. We would love to meet you for drinks/dinner when you arrive.

As far as social activities, there is a monthly pool party for our villages that meets at the Shady Brook pool. I'm sure your particular village is doing events just for your village. Look for a Facebook page specific to your village so you can stay current with events. Boozy Bingo is every Monday at Sawgrass, we like to go to that. (It's music themed). There are a lot of events across The Villages that I'm sure you will have fun exploring. The next BIG event will be the Electric Light Party in January.

We are Thom and Lanette (It's Lanette that is writing this). We live on Reece Patterson. Say hello when you arrive!

Welcome to The Villages! You will quickly find that you can be as busy as you want to be...or not. Being in a brand new neighborhood will be an early advantage, as most of your neighbors will be in the same situation. You will make new friends quickly and easily, rather than having to try and fit in to pre-existing cliques.

Living in The Villages can be a little overwhelming initially, but you will soon find your own way. Should you ever find yourself moping around, thinking "I'm bored," that's on you! Enjoy the ride.

I see there's a few FB "Shady Brook" groups already. Join them and make an effort to attend as many gatherings as possible. The rest will fall into place from there.

Never know what you will learn on talk of the villages. HUH a capybra is a 77-150 pound rodant-RAT.

Lots of people have guinea pigs as pets. (Close relative of the capybara)

You didn't say anything about SPORTS. Golf and pickleball are BIG here. Plus a million other sports. Pickleball is easy to learn and sharpens your reflexes. It involves quick motions. You can play land volleyball or water volleyball. Softball, both men's and women's is very popular. There is an archery club. There are a zillion clubs also. The investment club is interesting. There is a movies club. So, you folks will not be bored.
.........My advice is to take it easy at first. You might try to do too many activities at first.

I had a pet miniature pig for awhile. It did not work out well. The pig formed ZERO bonds with me. It was not cuddly or affectionate. It ignored me completely and only wanted to EAT. I hope you guys do better with your capybara. Since they are large if they have eating habits like my miniature pig, that would lead to a bad experience.
......Whichever way your experience goes with one, it would be interesting to hear about it on this forum.

The Resident Academy is an interactive program for residents who are interested in learning about their local government.

Our ultimate goal for the Resident Academy is to alleviate the confusion, questions, or mis-information that exists throughout the community regarding the responsibilities and functions of the Community Development Districts.

During this program, participants will receive an in-depth look at the various District Departments and how they work together to make this the best community to live, work and play. Department Directors will also be available to answer questions or make appointments for those seeking additional information.

You will want to become an active part of your new "neighborhood" when you arrive, just don't feel like you have to do it all at once. You have the rest of your life ahead of you. Enjoy it to its fullest. And welcome! Your best years are ahead of you.

I welcome you and appreciate your wanting a pet Capybara. I understand that they do better if you have two as long as both are not male. You should join the Capybara club. That way you can have access to the Capybara swim pool.

Should You Keep a Capybara as a Pet?
