California Wildfires
 
I don't want to sound unsympathetic, but am I the only one who thinks the non-stop news coverage of the wildfires in California is just plain boring?

The fire is devastating to so many people and I feel terrible for them. It's hard to celebrate misery for our fellow man.

As far as media coverage, there are many other stations that aren't covering this disaster so push the button on your control. News of this nature isn't important to many until their ox is being gored.

Look for an increased risk of more fires due to the explosion of homelessness in the state. They have always had the Santa Anna Winds, but they have not always had the amount of ignition sources they have today. More unauthorized fires, more problems.

I am sympathetic, but I don't want to watch non-stop news on wind speeds and videos of houses being burned to the ground, with the same house being shown multiple times. I can't do anything about it. So, what is the point of hour after hour of boring news coverage? A 2-minute update every hour would be more than adequate coverage.

Insurance companies taking another big hit with these fires. The fires are difficult not boring to watch. I feel awful for those who lost their homes and all of their priceless possessions. Lives lost but many also saved by the brave first responders on the front lines. The billions in losses will be reflected in our next homeowner’s insurance premiums also. All too common these disasters.

Maybe that is what they say in Ca. in the summer when Florida is hit with Hurricanes and tornadoes.

I believe hurricane force Santa Ana winds have been around at least since they were recorded in the 1840s and mentioned several times through California history. The unusual aspect is the new growth from too much rain last year. This too happens from time to time.

In 24 hours the fires have burned 25,000 acres. The Palisades fire is the most destructive in LA history. Bass's budget cut has really affected the FD's ability to get firefighters and equipment out while she cools her heels in Africa.

IMO There should be one insurer in this country United States all those billions going to insurance CEOs and company might as well go government. They can’t even any worse. This IMO includes vehicle, life, health, and residential. Government always bales insurance out when big event occurs. Let insurance industry go out get real job. In Cala case insurer claims will get denied business as usual for insurance. Then government again will bale them out AND they WILL raise rates on rat or us.

News division are a business and like any other business they try to deliver what they believe their customers want.
Do I believe this has been excessive, yes, this is not being unsympathetic.
I feel the same way when there is a hurricane here in Florida.
Here almost all networks either interrupted or canceled programing.
But in either case I do not get upset, with streaming just flip to a movie until it's over.

FYI, California has had record rain season. This is miss management by government, when you cut your fire department budget by $43 million what do you think will happen, when you miss guide your water sources, what do you think will happen, when you don’t do controlled burns what do you think will happen?
This isn’t about mother nature. This is about a government who has their heads up their behind.

You sound exactly how you say you don’t want to sound. Tens of thousands have lost their homes and hundreds of thousands have evacuated. There are widespread power outages, reports of low or no water pressure, and poor air quality. It’s a humanitarian crisis that’s unfolding and your post could be interpreted that you’re insensitive to that.

Nonsense. They have a high to the north and a low to the south. This generates easterly downslope winds that warm due to adiabatic compression. This is such a common occurrence they have a name for it: Santa Ana winds. They have had a dry season in Southern California after a previous wet season and apparently poor land management practices. Regarding cars, please remind us of which brand of EV you drive.

Do you have an off button on the remote? or change the channel or go volunteer somewhere? No one is forcing you to watch . Same goes for coverage on snowstorms, or hurricanes. Seriously, just change the channel.

Boring?
 
It’s not boring to those of us with family and friends in California. Just change the damn channel, watch a movie or go outside and do something. This post didn’t sound unsympathetic, it’s mean. I’m watching people lose their homes, schools burning to the ground and thousands of people evacuated as firefighters are risking their lives. I’m thinking how can we help? The Villages people responded beautifully to help residents of North Carolina after Hurricane Milton, good thing we weren’t bored then.

Insurance companies cancelled 13% of policies in CA in 2024. Sound familiar.

Not if you moved here from California and you have dozens of friends and relatives there. I never heard a Californian complain about too much hurricane news coming from Florida.

News broadcasters rely on anything they can get to pin you to their station. Political upheavals both internal and external, disasters both natural and manmade, etc. The more horrific, long duration or salacious the better. As far as the weather, a weatherman is in all his or her glory being given that 15 minutes of broadcast fame. Nature of the beast I assume. Change the channel

…….and, like it or not, this issue was identified years ago and simply put under the table. We have plenty of water in the USA. Just need a plan/project to move it cross country from where we have too much water to where we don’t have enough. If this was an issue in China they would probably build an aqueduct system to resolve or attach a piping system to the Great Wall. We just need to start thinking on a national level rather than a tribal, state by state level. I will not say more since I would not like to be accused of being political on this thread. Just research it yourself.

Boring? Why don’t you change the channel or go for a walk. I’m a mother who just left the Calabasas CA area yesterday after visiting my daughter & grandkids. We were under evacuation warnings my last 24 hours there. It was scary as hell and I find your comment very very insensitive.

…but it costs money to maintain a forest. Who would pay to have the forest floor maintained and firebreaks cut?? The US forest service? Part of USDA budget. Sounds like a likely partner for the states involved. Do they have a plan?? They certainly pay enough in advertising that might be better placed in action. I personally know for a fact that during forest fire “off season” other US government agencies employ/use our Fire fighters in other non-related roles where they might be better utilized in functions that might mitigate fire threats. This has nothing to do with politics but a lot to do with misuse of a valuable asset

How about the non stop weather coverage before a hurricane in Florida, Some TV stations do not even allow 30 minutes for the national news and most of their coverage is way before the storm

Should have a negligible effect on Florida pricing. Most Fla. insurance companies have 0 business in California

I'm sorry you find my comment insensitive. I didn't criticize the disaster, just the over-the-top and repetitive news coverage. How would you like to see your house being burned down on national news over and over and over again?
