Super bright add on led front lights on golf carts.

For those who have added these super bright add on lights to the front of your golf cart your a public safety hazard by blinding on coming traffic. If it hasn’t already happened these blinding lights are going to cause a serious accident possibly a head on accident. Save those lights for when you go into the wilderness, totally unnecessary for a cart driving at 20 - 25 MPH

CarlR33 01-31-2025 09:53 PM

Or you get the opposite, a cart with a ton of the optional parade lighting taking the place of the actual headlights and they never turn on their actual headlights so no taillights going up Meggison with cars approaching a dark cart at 30mph. Seen it on three carts just last night usually around an hour before the square closing.

CFrance 01-31-2025 10:16 PM

These lights are blinding to people driving in a car, even.

The problem isn’t necessarily the lights, it’s that they aren’t correctly aligned. That being said, they are only necessary on older carts that don’t have the new technology LED headlights.

Sorry to say IMO they don’t care. Those are off road lights and are supposed to be covered up on streets/roads. But, hardly no traffic enforcement in 70% of villages.

Off road light bars can not be properly aligned cause they shine all over. You would actually have to point them to ground to not shine ahead.

Counties won’t hardly enforce traffic laws. I seen truck with light bar mounted on hood above grill totally against law if not covered up on roads. Vehicles are only allowed 4 headlights to be on at one time on highways. Light bars have several individual lights in bar.

So Agree!! They are a definite hazard for oncoming traffic.

gorillarick 02-01-2025 07:41 AM

" But, hardly no traffic enforcement in 70% of villages. "

More like 100%

Yes, those lights are not directional. Headlights slope toward the ground so that they only light ~100 feet ahead as the beam hits the pavement.
Do these inconsiderates really need to light rooftops and shine their beams into living rooms?

Give 'em the brights. Flash Flash Flash
I think I'll start carrying my torch lantern when I walk at night.

Bilyclub 02-01-2025 08:12 AM

Since we’re going down that road… Blue or red lights in the front of a cart are also illegal.

Dotneko 02-01-2025 08:45 AM

I want to put a giant mirror on the front of my cart and reflect their blinding headlights back at them. We call them cyclops carts.

MrFlorida 02-01-2025 09:21 AM

Better bright lights than no lights. I saw a guy yesterday driving down Canal in the dark, with no lights at all !!!!

Bay Kid 02-01-2025 09:21 AM

It would be nice if the bright lights were cut off when approaching on coming traffic just like dimming the bright lights in your car. Common courtesy.

And cars have blinding lights as well.

They are not properly aimed because the driver's vision is so poor they still wouldn't be able to see if they were properly positioned.

These lights are blinding and should be banned. An accident ready to happen.

I agree the bright LEDs on golf carts are a problem, but as all of us age glare becomes a bigger problem at night. I have always thought that a white line with reflective paint on the shoulders of the cart lanes would be a safe and beneficial addition when bright on coming lights affect your safety, diverting your vision to a reflective edge would make a much safer alternative.

La lamy 02-02-2025 06:45 AM

Agreed about LEDs. Blinding, making it such a hazard at night. When I'm stopped at a red light and I have those LEDs blinding me from behind, I turn my mirror to shine the lights back on them. Hopefully they get the feel for what they do to others.

Speeding

For all of you mentioning 25-30 MPH.. It was my understanding The Villages Kart speed limit is 20 MPH. Who enforces this?

It’s an automatic function on newer vehicles.

On the other hand, those lights make it so much easier for the cart driver to see. They also make it much easier for cars to see carts at intersections. Nearly all golf cart driving here happens during the daylight hours, so night drivers seldom face oncoming carts—most of the carts on the paths at night are heading home from the town squares. As for the strings of LED lights along the sides, they help so much with visibility that I’d recommend them to anyone buying a new cart as a safety feature.

I’ve complained for decades about SUVs and trucks with headlights that are a foot or more higher than car headlights and blind car drivers. It hasn’t led to a change.

We shut it off on our vehicle because it's not really accurate and more of a hassle than help. It's turned the high beams on with vehicles approaching many times. Then I get high beams flashed back at me.

Emkay56 02-02-2025 08:03 AM

If there was a way to turn it off, without turning off the regular headlights, we would. If they would have installed the light switch so the first click would turn on regular lights and the second click would turn on that bright light, it would solve the issue. We've tried angling it down so it's not so bright at oncoming traffic. Not sure what else we can do.

Not true, they shine in the direction they are pointed. Even you admit it by contradicting yourself and saying they are direction (point at the ground).

grumpy@turton.us 02-02-2025 08:18 AM

Only intended for off road use.

These light bars are for off road use and not intended for anything on streets.

They do not. All that happens is you have to adjust the mirror back later.

Fastskiguy 02-02-2025 08:22 AM

It's responsible on the part of the cart buyer to get the brightest, most blinding lights they can possibly buy. It's in the name of safety so they can see. Kinda like it is important to get the biggest pickup truck you can possibly fit in the garage for going to get milk at Publix. The occupants in the other car must die if an accident ever happens. Or ear splitting exhaust on your motorcycle ("loud pipes save lives!!!") It's just being personally responsible.

Joe

PS Fortunately 99% people in TV are awesome and we only have 1% entitled ******** so it's actually pretty good here :)

They are absolutely directional. They are not omnidirectional in the slightest.

Headlights can be misaligned and point too high. That does not magically make them no longer directional. Any misaligned light is a hazard.

The light bar that really helps the cart driver safely see the road in the same way driving lights help cars.

It is both the light and the alignment. Those LED add on lights were designed for off road use therefore proper alignment would help but is not the solution. Older lights can be up graded with newer brighter head lights and tail lights.

Many only turn on and off with the main headlights. You are not suggesting the golf car blackout, I assume.

Bwanajim 02-02-2025 08:29 AM

Sure would be nice if Golf Carts had highbeams. That would solve the problem, and it wouldn't be very expensive.

This post has got me thinking, and eureka! I’ve got it! I have a great super powerful shop light that I keep on my work bench. I’m putting it in the cart and will use as defensive lighting for the inconsiderate morons with their blinding beams. It’s time to fight fire with fire. If it turns out that this light isn’t bright enough, I’ll head over to Amazon and buy one that is. Thank you for making me think of this as I’ve been suffering in silence for far too long. Note that this is a hand held device and will only be used on offenders.

I always drive with my hand ready to hit the light bar switch to "off" as soon as I see an oncoming cart. If others extend that courtesy, I haven't experienced it yet. It is not true that you don't need a light bar on a newer cart. My 2024 evolution has a bright but narrow beam. It is not effective at illuminating black curbing. When I turn on my light bar, I instantly see curbing as well as street signs.

Most have a separate on/off switch. If they don't they should. These bright, blinding lights aren't safe for either cart.

Nice quote about automobile laws. Golf carts are not automobiles. I have the lightbar on my cart and it is aimed downward. The poster mentioning alignment is correct. It makes a difference. If that light “went everywhere” there would be no concentration of brighter light on the ground in front of me. All this said, I do wish the light had its own switch, as I like the safety of the side LED lights and don’t always need the front one.
