Pickleball Court Wind Screens

Hey Villages Recreation.... how about prioritizing the replacement of wind screens you removed months ago. Thank you very much.

CarlR33 03-30-2025 09:05 AM

Have you contacted them directly?

If they don't have replacements immediately ready, they shouldn't take the old ones down. IMHO

MrFlorida 03-30-2025 12:24 PM

I don't think the Villages Recreation reads this forum, you should contact them directly.

Topspinmo 03-30-2025 03:29 PM

They probably go cheap and only put 1/2 screens. IMO no screens better than foot ground and 5 foot open at top. Early morning on windwards sides humidity condensation makes courts wet. Good luck when you contact Rohan.

I seriously doubt "Villages Recreation" reads this board.

rsmurano 03-31-2025 05:14 AM

Weeks ago, I heard they were going to be 3 weeks to a month delay on putting some of them up.
Wouldn’t it be wise to have the wind screens in hand then have the crew go tear down the existing screens and then while they are there, put up the new screens? Too logical?
I’ve seen them tear down the screens for an incoming hurricane and it took the crew about 10 mins to whip them down. So in 1/2 a day, they could take down and put up wind screens for 6 courts, little longer for ezell, Rohan, and Everglades.

ldturecek 03-31-2025 05:23 AM

They are replacing the ones at Churchill this week.

ndf888 03-31-2025 06:06 AM

PCVG and TVPCP may have more clout than any individual pickleball player. They could submit a petition.

MichiganKid 03-31-2025 06:09 AM

Rohan, he could care less

Those two organizations, which are not official Village organizations, are ruining Pickleball in the Villages by taking up increasingly more Pickleball court time. They run 50+ people off the Pickleball courts in the morning for a handful of others not from the area. If they are going to take away court time from owners it should be between noon and 4.

agree, open times till 10 am league Beginning times and advance beginners times 10 to noon should have sunrise to moon times, no private court time before noon.

Nice, we are paying for wear and tear of other people using the courts? Seems if they check the pools for resident cards the courts should be the same consideration? Have you contacted anyone at TV about it?

Bilyclub 03-31-2025 08:01 AM

Eisenhower and Big C were without wind screens for 6 months. The stated back then they have to be custom made. I guess they never thought about overlapping the ends.

MrFlorida 03-31-2025 08:11 AM

They should convert a few unused tennis courts to pickleball courts... most are not used .

Takes longer due to clearing courts to do the work, travel, setup, cleanup, etc.

FredMitchell 03-31-2025 10:09 AM

No windscreens is an improvement, especially for the summer when winds are 0-3 in the morning and its already 80 with 95% humidity. The wind dries the courts faster, increases evaporation of sweat, and reduces the fogging of glasses.

If the wind bothers your play, there is always shuffleboard, golf, etc.

100% of the players in both organization are Villagers, so you are basically complaining about one group of residents using the courts instead of another group of residents. Neither group uses that many facilities on any given day so there are still tons of courts available for other groups. Remember that open play is generally only dawn-10AM unless the courts aren't permitted for another use.

Agree 100%. They don't have to do it at every rec center. Half would be enough.

Good luck getting the powers in charge to evaluate the use of the tennis vs PB courts.

Maybe, but still poor planning IMO. No reason to have the screens down more than a day or two.

Sorry, no. There is plenty of air movement to dry wet courts when the windscreens are up, and the sun does more of the work than the wind. When it's hot it's hot. Windscreens improve the ability to play 100% of the time.

If that is a serious comment, IDK what to say. Maybe they should take down the fences, too, and if you don't like chasing balls, just go play shuffleboard instead. SMH/eyeroll

Better idea put kitchen line down on platform tennis courts that are HARDLY ever used. Nice caged in area don’t have to chase the ball. And yes they are same 20 by 44 courts.

The main difference is the players which those organization run off the courts (literally) are the local owners. Those organization keep increasingly are taking up more court time. At a minimum, they need to back off how much court time they take away from owners.

You are too realistic and asking way too much from the villages. 😜😂

Yes, the powers that be have been contacted directly. There have been no less than 7 different answers for why the windscreens were removed before the new ones were available! Same thing re courts that don’t get maintained south of 44, with nets in tatters.

Windscreens and nets are being replaced where they are not needed because they are in good condition BUT the lifestyle tours visit those locations so of course THOSE need to be pristine! Isn’t the rec department supposed to be working for us, the residents?? (I know, I’m being naive!)

The most logical theory I've heard is replacement is under warranty due to some sort of specification/installation issue.

Court nets at Riverbend that have been held together for over a year with tywraps were recently replaced now that Lifestyle visitors are using those courts.

In the meantime, nearby, complete, perfectly useable courts at San Tropez remain locked for months waiting for the rec center to complete.

Those organizations are Villages residents run by volunteers. PCVG offers many instructional and organized play opportunities.

Pickleball Community Volunteer Group

Any resident can put together a group and reserve courts for play.

Lowers the value of the surrounding real estate. Do you live next to those noisy things?

Topspinmo 04-01-2025 09:14 AM

Anything south of 44 not that old. If windscreen are tattered then they are buying the cheaper screens and probably not keeping them zipped tied in place. heavy duty wind screens are double triple sowed with reliefs holes sowed in to release the pulling pressure of wind. If you see windscreen that has relief hole cut they are cheap ones with lighter material.

In my area They also contract out any maintenance on screens which leads to Communication problems. You would think the down maintenance days broken zip ties would be replaced? But, in my area have to complain/ point out the screen are blowing out. The zip tied get brittle and when higher winds come up the will pop. So this create on going maintenance.

Now shall we talk about the hard lopsided squeeze rollers that don’t work until they get completely saturated with water due to hard PVA material that deteriorates in sun when cheaper softer roller works without being saturated and last longer and don’t deteriorate. And yes had that conversation several times also.

IMO bottom line some Rec center management not managing. They just put out fires instead of preventing them.

That's illogical. The members of TVCPC and PCVG leagues have just as much right to the courts as other residents. That's like stating that the Chitty Chatty women's PB group that permits 6 courts at Xxxx Rec Center at 10AM on Tuesdays is taking the courts from other "owners".

I was thinking the same thing so what is the point of the windscreens? Seems like a waste of my money? Won’t there be an indoor court at some point? I presume then it will be too hot or cold in the building?

Another illogical argument. If you buy a house that backs up to the Turnpike, don't expect the FL DOT to restrict trucks bc you don't like the truck noise. If you back up to a golf course, don't be upset when balls end up in your yard. If you back up to a pond, expect gators and mosquitos. And if you buy a house within earshot of a PB court......

True. I play tennis on the soft courts (har-tru surface) so I'm a little biased. There's nothing like the pleasant "puh" sound the tennis ball makes when it strikes the ground.

Obviously you don’t play pickleball and are relatively new to TV. Windscreens are a pretty standard part of most courts. The handful of indoor courts being built in Eastport will be so full that the lines will be out the door letting all that hot air in.

Correct, I don’t play and while they maybe standard my question was still not answered so I Googled it and found it kinda, well funny. Reduces wind interference, more enjoyable and focused game experience, privacy, improve ball visibility. Seems it would be more fun if that ace player had to deal with these outdoor sport issues and if they are down now they have adapted, iMO.

It's a mixed bag. For me, greatest advantage is better viability of the ball.

The screens don't "block" wind, they redirect it under and over the screen, often in unpredictable ways.

Older courts have plantings around then that do a better job of diffusing the wind below the screens.
