Drinking

Lately I have been traveling all over the world on Cruise Ships. Lately the topic has been, " Is the Drunkenness that bad in The Villages" ?
Our response is, "'The sex is Worse". What's your opinion?

Stu from NYC 04-03-2025 08:48 AM

What happened to the pineapple?

I'm surprised to learn that the alcohol consumption in The Villages is now a heated topic of debate on a global scale. I guess no one wants to discuss the Middle East, or tariffs, or sports?

DonH57 04-03-2025 09:23 AM

There are the bad apples who over consume, do something stupid, and it reflects to look as if we are all like that.

First hand knowledge?

I'm not sure "first hand" would give a reasonable basis for comparison.

As Sir Winston Churchill once so famously said "a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can get its pants on."

A person who drank a lot before retirement is probably going to drink a lot following retirement too, but I doubt the level of "drunkenness" is any higher in TV than an any other place of like size. But going back to Sir Winston's comment...reading stories about excessive imbibing (or wanton sex) is going to draw one heck of a lot more readers and listeners than articles about local churches filling shoeboxes for children's Christmas every year, or "Honey do" programs where parish members make themselves available, free of charge, to do tasks that fellow Villagers can no longer do on their own, or neighborhood co-operative pet-sitters or house-watchers, or efforts in conjunction with the Humane Society, etc.; all and a whole lot more of which take place in The Villages.

But, people enjoy reading about sleaze, so...

Or, it’s just some ā€œapplesā€ are different. Some can over drink and be fine, some have a personality you want to be far and removed from when they have even a couple. No one is the same.

I have yet to see any examples of extreme drunkenness nor encountered the myriad of swingers I was promised before coming here. I'm sure some exist but I'm also sure a lot of it is urban legend.

Or maybe I'm just hanging out at the wrong places.

It seems like the majority of unruly drunks highlighted in "the newspaper that shall not be named" are adult children living with their parents and/or residents of the areas just outside of TV.

It's a minor topic until you are injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver.

My SIL who first told us about the STD's was rather surprised when I told him it was not true

I was also asked about STD's in the Villages , I told them that we have many " Sun Tan Days" here in the Villages, as well as all of Florida.

So if person was drunk and ——monger before they came to villages I doubt the villages will change their lifestyle. IMO it will probably get 10 times worse… ::highfive: what do you think?

Ahhh, of course. My assumption is always Sister in Law because I have several, but not a single son in law can I claim. While I did, indeed, assume, the reference was still vague. However, I should have gleaned the proper usage via context. Mea culpa offered.

I have people in my village that were already big on various things before moving to TV. Pickleball, golf, drinking, crafting etc. Almost all have taken their "hobbies" to unprecedented levels here.

In my opinion, there is far more drinking in The Villages than sex. I’m aware of two or three dozen swinging couples in The Villages. No, they aren’t usually interested in including a single guy. One of the difficulties is that people may come here as active swingers with a couple happy decades of doing that, but age catches up with them. By around seventy both the women and the men are less exciting to look at. With a swinging couple, both people have to be interested in getting together with another couple. That cuts the likelihood of a meeting of the, um, minds in half. Year be year this loss of interest grows. Meeting a couple for a swinging episode or hosting a swinging party gradually comes to seem like more trouble than it’s worth. Sometimes as they age, swinging couples get together to be around other people like themselves, yet they just eat and drink and chat without playing. There are of course variants. I knew a man who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for inventing a way to get plastic to carry electrical current, making possible all of our iPhones and iPads. At 79, he was still active, though the frequency had decreased. He still enjoyed the parties.

However, drinking pretty much maintains its appeal.

gorillarick 04-04-2025 06:30 AM

I saw a couple pull up to a village postal station yesterday. Both had an open beer can in their hand.
Yes it was beer. Didn't even have a foam thermo around it, right outa the cooler for a quick one.

drdoug59 04-04-2025 06:48 AM

The culture of the villages encourages alcohol consumption, happy hours starting at 11 AM, at a golf orientation put on by the villages staff, the speaker talked about having alcohol after 9 holes. It’s promoted by the culture here

cwmmfink 04-04-2025 06:54 AM

Just got back from a cruise. In the shuttle back to the parking lot got hammered on the STD thing! Sigh.

drdoug59 04-04-2025 06:57 AM

People just love to talk trash about The Villages. We have worked hard our entire lives and if we want to have a drink with friends, it's seen as a bunch of drunks. Ridiculous. I love seeing people enjoying life.

RickyLee 04-04-2025 07:21 AM

I'm sure glad I'm not the only one that read sister-in-law! It scratched my head 😆

Yesterday morning drove by a house as 3 men in the driveway drinking shots at 10:30am. A little to early, don't you think.

Those items make people on both sides hateful and mean. None of us can do anything about them, so why bother talking about them?

Drinking and sex, well there are two universal topics that people can talk about. Very few ever get hateful over it and the conversations are usually very fun. :)

Nope, not too early. Thanks for asking!

CybrSage 04-04-2025 07:50 AM

If people think there is a lot of drinking in TV, just wait until you learn about 20 somethings and downtown bars ...

Topspinmo 04-04-2025 07:53 AM

When I was stationed in Texas in early 70’s Texas had dry counties. Maybe be good idea for Sumter, Lake, and Marion counties to go dry?:a040: that would eliminate golf cart only driver’s from driving for alcohol. O wait:shocked: there home delivery.:faint:
