Key Card Integration?
 

Is there any way to integrate a key card into your side mirror so you don’t have to pull it out every time you go through a gate? Maybe some kind of a chip you can put under your side mirror?

They have many posts on this, the short answer is yes, but hold off because they are looking at changing the system and it could render these in effective. Our district rep was showing us a new strip that is applied to your headlight...

It's about $25-$30 to get a chip installed in your mirror. Blow the $30 and don't wait.

I’ve had 1 in all my cars for years. I doubt it would work on the rear view mirror because if I’m a foot or 2 away from almost hitting the stalk, mine won’t work.
Next time you drive up to a gate, place your card next to the rear view mirror to see if it opens the gate.
Also, this mirror chip saves on window motor usage, you don’t have to open your window in a downpour, and it saves time going thru the gate without scrambling for your card and rolling the window down. $25 we’ll spent

Had the chip installed on my car and truck...because of the height of my truck it works about 50% of the time, the car is about 90% still worth the $70 for both

My entrance to McClure is on Fenny close to the Publix. Since golf carts are not allowed near this gate, I see no reason to even have it. But that is for another day.
Today the question is for those who have turned their cars into gate passes:
Are you not concerned that an evil doer will cruise the Publix parking lot and clone your gate pass since you have stuck it outside of your vehicle?

For a year now, I only hold the card up on the closed window at the level of the electronic eye and it opens the gate. I don't drive a full size SUV so it is already at the level of the security pad. I discovered this during a downpour and didn't want the car deluged with rain inside. For what it is worth, it works.

There should be no concern whatsoever because you don’t need a gate pass to enter through any gate . The gates are not “secure”.

All anyone has to do to get through is press the red button. The gate opens up , no questions asked ….

It works for some vehicles and some gates, but not for all.

Yep, holding your card up to your window works.

Your thoughts on possibly not requiring a key card for village entry.
 

Would you be interested in taking parts in a survey concerning car key gated Entry in the Villages? One of the suggestions being put forward is the idea to have the entry gates work just as the exit gates do where the gate is lifted based on the presence of the vehicle and does not require the use of a card key. This is based on the premise that the gated entries there are for the protection and safety of those people using the multi Multi modal path so the vehicles do not speed through the entry, but rather are forced to stop and look both ways before crossing the multi Multimodal. Other perceptions are that the card key provides some additional level of security for the community, but this seems somewhat counter to the observations that anyone pressing the red button at the entry gate gets access. Even those were an attendant is in place the attendant simply keeps the guard gate open on the visitor side. I do not see any checks for balance is there for who gets in and gets out. Further to this point, it seems that any of the contractors and service individuals do not have card keys, but simply hit the red button and enter that way. So the question would be is there enough interest that surveys an electronic survey be sent via email to see the interest or support for the use of the Entry gate to be just like the use of the exit gate? If adopted this would avoid a very large expense by the community to replace all the entry gates with a new readers and new cards simply to then require a possible increase in your amenity fees to pay for this upgrade. I do not know about that. I've had my card inches from the sensor and it still stumbles. Have to wave the card around. BTW the whole system is a joke. I think some one in the window motor business or leather upholstery business convinced TV to install this system. Golf cart😒s are a weak excuse.

A few gates do not have a red button.

What’s your hurry? Maybe just go thru the Visitor Gate

I now use the larger card not the round 3M one as it gives me much better range to not need to be close and works well on both the Tesla model 3 which is low and the Honda CRV which has a higher mirror. So nice to not be distracted looking for the gate card and allows me to have both hand on the wheel at all times. Then, it's like using the exit gate. :smiley:

It does not matter which gate you go through . They both work exactly the same way….

The gates and guards are part of the Developer's overall marketing strategy and is unlikely to change, unless and until their marketing folks decide it's advantageous to remove them or revise the process ... as they've done through the years.

That only helps if there is a gate attendant...

And, I understand that reasoning. Yet, who owns the gates to then control that process?? Who does the Village staff that recommends changes report to? What is public and what is under private control. I sometimes wonder.

This is what I think, but I'm surely willing to be proved wrong.

The various Districts own and control the gate houses/gates. Per the permits issued by the county for the specific neighborhoods, the Developer (subsequently the Districts) were able to maintain ownership of these appurtenances, even though they're located on public ways (they either maintained ownership or maintain control, via some sort of perpetual lease-back or agreement with the county).

I believe the gate process can be amended, changed, removed, altered, at the discretion of the Districts. That would likely take agreement by the County. As a legal matter, I don't know if the Developer still has a say in what happens, but from a practical perspective, the District seldom does anything the Developer doesn't agree with.

Again, I don't know if any of the above are "facts", but based on my experience, this is the likely way it works IMO.

Applied to your HEADLIGHT? Maybe a typo? That would be a pretty strange place (and probably illegal place) to put it. With all the other more logical places (windshield bottom left corner being common in many places) the headlight would be the last place I'd think of. :D

Unless they plan on changing EVERY LAST CARD in T.V. (maybe 78-80,000?) that will never happen. As long as the cards are cloned properly, they will continue to work probably way after we are all pushing up daisies.. Some sellers just use random numbers or all zeroes and THAT could be an problem if that card number isn't in the database. But if they use your own registered number you'll be safe for a very long while.

That's because they are trying to sell them. Still wonder if that placement would even be legal. The one in our side mirror works 100% flawlessly. Haven't missed a gate in years. :D "Long Range" isn't the issue anyway as gate readers are always close. .

Yes, I can do it for you for free if you come to me. All I need is your Villages issued gate card in order to make a duplicate.
