Must read. Orlando Sentinal. Page J 1 Cancer benefit thrown for a loss by Villages.
I know there are two sides to every story. But this is kinda disturbing. It seems that the Relay for Life in the Villages, (which was #2 in the state) has been cancelled because the morse family demands 50% of the proceeds for the new Moffitt Center in the Villages. It is the Sunday 6 February 2011 edition.

Some people may have had a problem understanding or following the issues raised with The Villages asking its residents to donate money to fund equipment for the new Moffit Center....BUT what The Villages is doing ( or not doing) for "The Relay For Life" fundraiser for the American Cancer Society is just "amazing". One thing for certain people can and will understand this.
Next thing we wil hear from the VIllages is that its a liability issue to have so many people on village property for a fund raising event. |
If you want to let Moffitt in Tampa know how disgusted you are with their non-stance on this issue, e-mail their Public Info officer and let her know. Michelle Foley can be reached at michelle.foley@moffitt.org. The more people of conscience who speak up, the better!

I personally commend the vollunteers for the Relay for Life for continuing with their plans this year and not buckling under from some "pressure" plan of the "powers to be" illegal as they may be. Possibly the Moffit Cancer Center may talk some sense into them!:boxing2:

Looks like more of the same slanted journalism from the Orlando Sentinel and Lauren Ritchie.
The real story will be soon be in the Daily Sun - maybe on page 25 or so. . |
Another excellent article by Lauren Ritchie. I am disturbed about the developers demands for 50% of the "action"....for the new Moffit Center. This does not pass the smell test. The Morse family has done so many wonderful things for our community and may have a good answer for this behavior. I hope so.

I hope so also. The relay for life in the villages had risen to the second largest in the state. What a shame if this is true.

chuckinca, I'm often skeptical of Lauren Ritchie and sensational journalism, but if the event is indeed moved, seems a logical reason.
I've concluded whether it's the Morses and TV, or Lauren Ritchie and the Sentinel, the end result is that it's all about the $$$$$$$$$$. Sadly. I've a cancer survivor and my regards to the volunteers who do so much. |

Like I said earlier , The People in The VIllages will understand the recent article in the Orlando paper. There may be some misunderstanding about donations in support of the equipement needed for the Villages Moffit Center but people do understand this Relay for Life issue.
This is not good PR for the Morses, The Villages or the Moffit Center. I also wrote to the Moffit Center alerting them how their name was being dragged down and through the mud over this recent incident. Suggest you all do the same!! |

Follow-up Question for the Moffitt Center

One has to be, or should be, a little cynical about what appears to have gone on, and appears to continue to go on, with respect to the fund-raising drive. |

that is amazing
Clinking on the link above is so interesting. then clicking on a name or business gives so much information. Very very interesting. Thanks Whalen

I'd done some research about Morse holdings, but this gives some I hadn't even thought to consider such as the LLCs for the water and power. I truly don't mind that they have their fingers in so many pies -- they run most of them quite well. I do dislike the greed in the running some of their businesses.

50% or Out
I noted that one post made reference to the real story to soon be found in the Daily Sun around page 25. Perhaps such reaction is good to remind us all not to jump to conclusions and pre-judge. On the other hand, I do not know of another venue in or around The Villages, other than the Orlando Sentinel/Lauren Ritchie, including the VHA or the POA that has the courage to honestly detail many of the busines dealings taking place in TV.
The problem as I see it is that some people here simply refuse to be faced with news that might affect their view of TV. I refer to this as disney dust clouding their vision. TV is no different than any other place and politics will always play a part in our lives. We can either embrace the truth and have it worked for us or ignore it and have it work against us. Thankfully that choice is still ours . I made mine long ago when I first moved here and Lauren Ritchie speaks the truth. I hold no credence in any media venue or Homeowner Association in TV and little based on past dealings with TV government. |

Follow-up Question to Moffitt
Quote:
"Other residents of The Villages and I have become concerned about some of the fund-raising actions alleged by the Orlando Sentinel to have been undertaken on behalf of your organization by the developer of The Villages. Would you be good enough to help allay these concerns by answering the following question: Would you please disclose the details of all contracts, arrangements, or other understandings between Moffitt and any member of the Morse family, or any corporation, limited liability company, partnership, or other entity controlled by the Morse family or any member thereof? Please specifically include any contract, arrangement, or other understanding that could financially benefit any of the foregoing because of fund-raising efforts on behalf of Moffitt or because of Moffitt's establishing a presence in The Villages. To assist you in putting this matter to rest, I will be glad to forward your response to the Property Owners' Association for publication in its Bulletin and will post your response on the TalkofTheVillages website. Thank you for your anticipated response." |

Moffitt Response to Follow-up Question
Quote:
"Thanks for your e-mail. Our contract with CFHA is not a matter of public record as it is information relating to a private contractual agreement. However, if there is information you are requesting that is not confidential we would be happy to share it with you if you would like to provide some specific questions. Thanks, Michelle" |

Maybe these donations already given to the developer's organization (is it really certifiably an organization? I couldn't find anything about it in searching the web) should incorporate to become a third party in this "contractual agreement." Why not? Monies donated blindly where people were so misled should know what the "deal" is with their money and have some say in negotiations. |
This is not meant to be a negative comment, but it is the response I expected. The request really was asking for confidential information. Maybe we could all brainstorm to see what information we truly want and what questions we think we can get answers to. I'd say that once we have some reasonable questions, it would be time to email Moffitt again and see what is said.
Some of my questions are: 1) What will Moffitt-TV offer that Leesburg-TV doesn't offer, if anything (this one should definitely be answerable). 2) How are Moffitt Centers usually funded -- all donations, public funding, equipment purchased by Moffitt or one of its subsidiaries or a combination? |
I agree that it was a request for legitimately confidential information. To add to Red's suggested questions, I would add:
Since Moffitt will not own the equipment, what direct benefit will Moffitt derive from fund raising effort? |

Following is her response: Hi Jack, The monies raised in The Villages will be used for the Moffitt Cancer Center at The Villages Health System and will not be shared with the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. All of the equipment purchased for The Villages Cancer Center will be owned by The Villages Health System and not Moffitt. If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to reach out again. Best, Michelle |
