Super Bowl National Anthem
With all the money spent on the Super Bowl, wouldn't you think they could find somebody who not only can remember the words to our National Anthem, but can also sing it the way it is supposed to be. Christina Aguilera not only screwed up the lyrics, but she ad-libbed so much the song was almost unrecognizable. Just my opinion! :cus:

She was terrible.

Butchered a beautiful song - agree, she was terrible.
|
Agree with all the above
|
Oh, THAT was what she was supposed to be singing? Thanks for letting us know.......
:a20: |
I thought the girl from Glee sang beautifully - they should have let her sing the National Anthem instead of C.A. screeching the wrong lyrics. JMHO.
|
singing
Its the words, not the sound. Lighten up.
|
But she didn't even get the words right!!!
|
Sadly, this was truly important to her from what I've read when it was announced she would be singing the anthem. It's hard to imagine that nerves got the best of her, but they obviously did. This wasn't Roseanne Barr's deliberate butchery of a beautiful song. This was a human making a mistake. It wasn't fun to watch or hear but I think it was a lot more painful for her than it was for anyone else.

Are the words in the song not a "living document" like they explain the Constitution? So I guess it is to be expected in today's US.

No sympathy here
She's a professional and should have gotten it right. A lot of national blood and treasure has been lost in defense of our nation's flag. With an audience of over 100 million viewers worldwide (Wikipedia) not including radio coverage, performers who are selected for this honor.......need to get it right. Whitney Houston had "personal problems" when she sang it during the Iraq war. Her performance was beautifully flawless, moving and inspirational. If you would like to be reminded how it needs to be sung and how it impacts us as a nation....please listen to this 4 minute YouTube with brief commentary. Turn the volume up and break out a tissue.

I agree with above. I also thought the half time show was terrible.

Some people say Whitney Houston lip synced Anthem.

Sorry, no sympathy for Christine. She isn't getting paid for and hasn't reached her present status by having "nerves." She should have rehearsed it until it was burned into her brain.
Too bad our National Anthem isn't a rap song, huh? |
I thought she did fine....I bet most did not know she missed the line....not the worst thing that could happen....hey remember the equipment "malfunction"???? This is the super bowl...live. Give her a break...after all she is from Pittsburgh....and we are all mourning the loss. Great game played by the Packers...my hat off to them.

That twenty something from Glee nailed her performance though. |
Poor Christina...made a big mistake.

This Super Bowl singer and half time entertainment issue is going to continue as long as the NFL and Networks continue to focus on keeping the 18-25 demographic entertained so they don't switch to some XBOX game instead of watching a Super Bowl they may have no interest in one way or the other.

Just wondering. Is this just a U.S. thing? Has anyone experienced similar with national anthems in other countries? I mean, singers who feel the need to improvise the melody to "make it their own"? This is the NATIONAL ANTHEM!!! It is not their latest potential top 40 song. I don't expect it to be sung without emotion, but I expect it to be sung with respect for the words and music. I wondered what those service people overseas thought about the "rendition" they heard. They had a Medal of Honor recipient at halftime. Wonder what he thought of it. I hope Red doesn't consider me one of the intolerant people, because not many things push my buttons, but that did.

I, personally am all for banning so-called celebrities from performing the National Anthem at sporting events! This song needs to be sung/performed as written and arranged in it's original format. Do it correctly and without all the "oh yeahs, etc!" or don't do it at all!:agree:

As to other anthems, I have heard the Canadian anthem changed by stylists. "Oh, Brittania" has never been altered that I know of. I don't think anyone has touched the French or German anthems. Have no clue about Italy. And absolutely no clue about the rest of the world. |
Yuck!
Quite frankly, I don't think she has any talent whatsoever.
|
Thank you.
My wife like it and I thought it was horrible. At least she didn't grab her crotch or spit. Black Eyed Peas were awful too. What no Kid Rock??? Yes I am serious; listen to his album Born Free. More Country and no Rap. |
People, you're talking about my friend Christina here. For goodness sake, she has one of the best voices I have ever heard. Her range is astounding. Her talent to entertain is amazing.
Here was a young woman singing from her heart. A professional, of course, but singing from her heart. She put her soul into it and tried to sing to her country. Singing, no less, without musical accompaniment. Singing in front of maybe a hundred million people. So she missed a line, and quite honestly I didn't catch that flub. My head must have filled it in. I was listening and thinking of what she meant, her version of a patriotic song. One of the most difficult songs that anybody, professional or amateur, can sing. She missed a line in front of a hundred million people, without musical backup, and one very difficult song. She did just fine. Now, let me hear from all those of you who have never made a mistake in your specialty under the sharp eyes of many who were sure that you should not have flubbed something so important. |
No matter how you take what happened during her performance, I find it hard to believe that people do not think she has talent. From the first time I heard her sing I knew that there was something special there. Listen to some of her stuff on youtube.com
Here is a fun song I think you might like (YOU HAVE TO CLICK ON WATCH on YOUTUBE LINK): [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu-7rPdFjvI[/ame] And it barely touches the ranges of her talent. Video did not stream well for me, here is just audio. http://www.emp3world.com/to_download.php?id=112865 |
I agree with you Tony.
Even the Chief Justice blew his lines at the swearing in... that is just as important as the National Anthem...we all are human...I feel most confident that these folks meant no disrespect. |

Why not take it back to its original purity and read it as Francis Scott Key's poem, without the British drinking song that sets it to music?

Go Tony!

Rudimentary skills
The first mistake was that no schooled musician has told her she needs to take college music major courses and learn, for one thing, Beginning Vocal Techniques. There, she would learn what musical "phrases" are, and that you don't gulp a giant breath after the first four words and before the phrase ending word, "see". This poor technique is not even high school level...even jr. high students are taught to complete a phrase before breathing.
Secondly, she sure as heck did not win five grammies without instrumental accompaniment nor without hours of sound mixing/engineering to correct the inability to sing in tune and stay in the same key. She and 99 percent of singers should never sing solo in public without accompaniment...especially with the intervals and range of the national anthem. It is treacherous for even the best and with instrumental backup to stay in tune. Whenever a singer steps up to sing this anthem unaccompanied, it is always a question of "how is he/she gonna butcher it today?". But this is Hollywood's product and if it makes money, that is all that matters. |

I also hope this is the last time she gets the opportunity to butcher our anthem. |
