Where are the duck hunters?

I'm looking to put the hurt on some FL birds this winter. Where are the duck hunters? I hear Lake Deaton, Okahumka and Minona can produce some birds.

I brought down the decoys and mud boat. Let's roll!

Per the google machine:

Can I duck hunt on any lake in Florida?

Can I duck hunt on any lake in Florida? According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, waterfowl hunting is permitted on private property with landowner permission and on any water body that has public access.Sep 5, 2023

Permit required, and in-season of course. This link may be helpful: Waterfowl Hunting | FWC

Why? Plenty of duck hunters in the area every Duck Season...

Oh no, I know I can shoot ducks on those lakes. I'm asking where my fellow meat eaters are.

Clearly you don’t live near any of the lakes in southern area of TV. From opening day to close, one can hear shotguns 7 days a week for hours.

Apparently new residents who moved to ST Johns and Denton area didn’t come from hunting areas. Some panicked calling LEOs that someone was shooting a gun. We are 3-4 miles away can hear the gunfire every morning

But it's not duck season....it's wabbit season!

Former duck hunter here, haven't duck hunted here but would be interested if you need a partner.

Hunted Lake Okahumka for years back in the day. Still good. Season starts around Thanksgiving, probably a mini season for teal in September. Let me know if you need a partner. Needs stamps in Fl. I live in The Villages.

Try Publix or Winn Dixie. Maybe even Walmart. Enjoy.

We hear it from DeLuna too during the season. Very faint and can tell it’s far away, but we hear it.

I'm definitely interested. I used to duck hunt a lot in South Florida.
Send me a PM

There are turkeys in the national forest just north of here.

The laws here allowing public access to hunting public lands are insane here in FL. I've never experienced such a thing and I've hunted all over the country. Even FWC when I talk to them acknowledges FL may very well be the most complicated in the country. But yes, I've been eyeing the hogs and turkey on the public lands here.

We drew a gator tag this year. Pretty excited about that. Hoping to hunt bear here, or at least offer my knowledge to a lucky resident who does draw and be part of a FL bear hunt. We hunt MN yearly for bear.

My guess is you cannot discharge a firearm anywhere within The Villages. Been here 3 years, have never heard a gunshot. Keep residents safe!

In the Villages, probably. But, it is perfectly legal to waterfowl hunt Deaton, Okahumpka and Minona. As they are not within The Villages.

I've been tempted to smoke that gator across the lake from us but I'm sure my neighbors (at least one of them) would get excited. The other would be excited for the gator BBQ later that evening.

I used to hunt ducks up north in my younger years but I don't think I would feel safe walking into duck habitat shared with alligators and water moccasins.

Yeah it’s different. Losing downed birds to alligators. Can run a dog for that very reason. Snakes never bothered me. I still wade, but it’s different.

I totally get it that meat gathers prefer not eating stuff farm raised and given questionable feed to promote growth. That being said, do you really think eating a gator living in a pond that accumulates all the chemical runoff from the pesticides and fertilizers in the Villages is something that is doing your body some kind of good?

RUCdaze 06-08-2025 11:09 PM

What did the ducks ever do to you?

gbs317 06-09-2025 04:31 AM

What I miss is wild game dinners. The local Vol FD would put one on every year as a charity event. They had venison, bear, boar, duck and turkey etc…
Is there anything like that around here I wonder.

Don’t shoot the cormorants, they taste like pelican!
