Lost power again (cdd 15 + ?)

For the 2nd time in less than 3 months, we lost power in the new section of the Villages near Eastport.

It’s raining, but nothing too torrential.

The Villages better work with SECO to get this fixed before they open Eastport.

Pathetic.

How long did you lose power each time. Hours, days weeks? We have a serious lightning storm with an inch of rain so far.

idlewild 06-14-2025 08:10 PM

Hours the first time five weeks ago and we’re still without power now. And this “serious lightning storm” is nothing compared to the summer storms.

Do the squares have generators or are they on a separate (??) grid? Because all of Eastport would be dark now too - including the hotel A if it were to be open.

How is the infrastructure resiliency this poorly planned?

CarlR33 06-14-2025 09:15 PM

Call SECO Monday and ask what the issues are? Did you call them for your outage?

thelegges 06-15-2025 03:59 AM

Our first experiences with Seco was 2007. In all our years in TV we may have had a flicker even during Hurricanes.
After moving to 3 different New Villages, we did find out as they added more to the grids the power would be disrupted for safety reasons.

Then again in our homes we built up north power was disrupted for the same reason. Usually 3-5 hours, not enough for refrigeration food issues, while utility workers did their jobs. Yesterday one of our northern homes had a power loss for 3 hours, due to animal/bird damage. Which is code for squirrels ate through something.
Thankfully most no longer have multiple clocks to reset.

mschwartzeee 06-15-2025 05:19 AM

The map was showing several lightning strikes near Eastport and the high school. Hope everyone is safe and the power restored quickly.

Before the Turnpike area Homes were built, that area was a total
wetlands area. Running the Electric Supply underground was a challenge, because of the huge junction boxes.. they had a problem with keeping the boxes waterproof. The connections will continue to be a problem.. Florida competes with Ethiopia to be, the Lightning Capital of the World, so prepare for those Violent Storms. I would suggest whole house Voltage Surge protection. You are in for a long haul. stay grounded my friend

I'm pretty sure that power companies know how to install underground equipment. Things happen. They will get it fixed.

That area was farm and pasture land for generations, and more recently had a large hurricane staging area for thousands of power line response equipment and workers.

If you plan on staying put in your new home I would suggest calling Generac and get a whole house generator installed.

Topspinmo 06-15-2025 10:57 AM

Probably lightning strike, can’t control that.

Want to see live lightning strikes go here

Real Time Lightning Map :: LightningMaps.org

When I hear big boom close I see where it hit and monitor during lightning storms.

Power has to come in from some where on pole, if that get hit, no power. I lived in area Oklahoma that had underground power supply. Still lost power when power line transformers was hit by lightning.

idlewild 06-16-2025 03:46 AM

The power is out AGAIN (3rd time in 6 weeks). It went out around 4:00 AM and they’re estimating a 2.5 hour restoration.

No word on cause but it’s not storming at all today so anyone defending them should walk a mile the shoes of those of us who keep losing power in homes with $50k bonds.

And I pray the geniuses at SECO didn’t try to sneak a maintenance outsge by customers - or even plan work that could cause an outage - without notifying customer.

Ptmcbriz 06-16-2025 06:17 AM

I watch a live lightning strike map during storms. We live near Sawgrass. I’m amazed at the amount of strikes south of Meggison near Eastport. It’s actually really weird they are always so concentrated there.

BubblesandPat 06-16-2025 06:41 AM

They built so much and so fast there maybe they are still tweaking the system?

I hate when others suggest this but have you called to ask SECO? My power did not go out so I don't imagine I would get very far if I called. On the other hand, you have an address that was affected by the outage - they may be more willing to talk to you.

(Make sure to mention your $50K bond so they know you are a customer they need to take care of and not just one of the regular Sumter County locals)

15 year old picture.. shows improvements and Eastport planned community... A wet prairie by any name, is a swamp.. It's Florida and that area was not prime area for building large structures..swamp rabbits run abundant. The methane gas will ooze out of that swamp for years.

I think you have a serious case of South of 44 Derangement Syndrome.

jimhoward 06-16-2025 08:21 AM

I don't think the recent power outages have been widespread in the Eastport area. I think its mainly just the village of Water's Edge. I don't think Shady Brook, or Moultrie Creek, or Wellpoint or Oak Hollow lost power

Lightening Rods

In addition to whole house surge protection get lightning rods. After the house burned down from lightning in Linden I decided to check out lightning rods. I went to POA meeting about lightening protection and rods were the first line of defense. A1 was one of the three companies they recommended because they had all the required certifications.
I got them 2 years ago and I sleep much better. A1 put mine in. These are especially important if you have gas!
It’s worth the peace of mind.

What do homes with $50k bonds have to do with power outages?

A quick on line search says lightning rods protecting a 2000 sf house cost about $1500 or so to put in. Does that sound right from your experience?

bowlingal 06-16-2025 09:24 AM

happens in Pine Ridge all the time. Thanks Leesburg electric!

Do you think that will stop a power outage?

You live in a new area still bring constructed. It takes time for utilities to adapt and balance out power consumption to fit the Load profile in any new area. Enjoy your new home and relax, all will be right in time.

No of course not.

idlewild 06-16-2025 12:20 PM

In addition to the 3 full power outages - each lasting over an hour - in the past 5 weeks, there have been another 3 or 4 power surges today alone here in Waters Edge. There are many neighbors calling SECO who claim the outages were due to a nesting animal (May 7), lightning (June 14), and nesting osprey - we got more specific this time - (June 16).

jimmyinvillages 06-16-2025 03:12 PM

@idlewild

I've noticed the same thing here in Easport.

Also did you have two more flickers this am (where power goes out for five seconds and comes back?) - wondering if that's just my house or the whole area?

Thanks

Nana B 06-16-2025 05:21 PM

We are in Shady Brook, Campbell Villas, and we also lost power during the same times you did in Waters Edge. It is annoying. Hope they get it figured out soon.

We get a text on power outages at one of our northern homes. Yesterday Outage (twice within 3 days) starting at 2:05am due to animal/bird for 3.5 hours. That’s code for squirrels ate the lines.
The line damage was cute bushy tail black squirrels chewing through the insulation protection. It’s common place monthly sometimes weekly, She knows our line repair people on a first name basis. Thanked her for getting power back up, and handed her french press espresso to go.

Sometimes you just have to accept not everyday is going to be perfect

Yes, Newell got their power station built up and now the power outages are almost gone. It just looks ugly as sin, but hey, the power is stating on.

We paid A1 $2,500 two years ago for a 2,000 square-foot house.
