Need a new bed, which one?

Just moved here and got rid of our old bed and need a new one. King size, what brand?

starflyte1 06-29-2025 06:20 PM

You might shop at Whites Furniture. In the past, they have let me lie on the display beds as long as I wanted. No standing over me.

Yes, everyone’s needs are different and getting advice on here is just others personal opinion based on their needs, etc. Go talk to an expert that deals with this everyday.

Get a futon and put it right on the floor.
Get a Sealy PosturePedic.
Get a Purple or Avocado brand!
Get a SleepNumber!
Get a Simmons BeautyRest!
Get a TempurPedic!

or...

ask a more specific question. Do you want a box spring? Were you happy with the bed you had and if so, why would you want to switch brands? If you weren't happy with it, what would you like your new bed to feature, that is different from what your old one was like? What's your budget? How many more years will you be strong enough to lift the mattress when you change the sheets? That makes a REALLY big difference in knowing what kind of bed you want.

Where do you find an expert? In my opinion, the people in the stores are only experts at selling the bed that makes the most profit.

Sparky99 06-30-2025 05:54 AM

If you have a medical condition, get a noted from your Dr and FL state taxes are exempt.

elevatorman 06-30-2025 06:31 AM

We got a Dreamcloud DreamCloud: Luxury Hybrid Mattresses & Premium Bedding and are very satisfied. It comes in a box and you unwrap it and it springs open. We used our old box spring and bed frame. I was skeptical but they give you a year to decide if you like it. Full refund if you don't.
At first we got a Winkbed but returned it, they give you 120 days for a full refund. Found the Dreamcloud for half the price and a year for return. So we figured give it a try if we did not like it go to a mattress store and get one.

Bill14564 06-30-2025 06:39 AM

We are happy with both our Wink and Nectar mattresses.

Wink gets better ratings on most of the sites I found.
Nectar is more fun to unpack.

Depends on the store, but if you do some online research before hand can help. I cannot say I have been held to purchasing something when in the store and you can leave with the advice of the store and do research afterwards for a return visit. It’s said your bed is where you spend the most of your life so not something to get wrong.

Why did you return the Winkbed? Asking, because that is the one I am most likely going to buy.....

Mattress companies are deliberately deceptive. They don't clearly identify their products with a model number that can be compared to other products. About a year ago, I tried to buy a Tempur-pedic mattress from the company store in Brownwood. I showed them a listing from Amazon with a lower price, and the Tempur-pedic guy could not even tell me if the mattress I ordered from Amazon was or was not the same mattress that he was selling. He said that they do not use model numbers for their products, so he did not know what Amazon was selling. I think this is typical in the mattress industry. So, if your are trying to research mattresses, good luck.

We moved here 5 years ago and my wife decided she needed a new bed.

Went to the local mattress stores and after each visit knew less about what to buy than before we walked in. Incredible deception within the same brands.

Finally went to local Sams pulled out mattresses and laid down for few minutes on each bed and we made a decision. Delivered a week or two later with frame and box spring and has worked out well for us. Turned out putting the frame together was a piece of cake.

I used to do product testing for a marketing company. I was offered a free pillow plus $10 to try out a new mattress topper at my local SleepNumber store, in exchange for an honest review (yes really, an honest review). I didn't like the topper and said so in the review. But I loved the mattress and wrote that as well. Got the free pillow, which was a pretty nice one (and expensive, retail was something stupid like $80) and my $10 check a month later.

But I really liked the mattress. And hubby and I were in the market for a new mattress, so I dragged him to the SleepNumber store and we ended up buying the lower-end model, the C4, plus a simple frame and a quilted mattress cover. They were having a special sale so we got a free set of sheets. Delivery guys came and set it up for us, showed us exactly how, showed us how to change our number settings, and took away our old mattress and box spring.

As a member of their loyalty club, I also got another set of sheets, another pillow, a travel pillow, and won another set of sheets in their membership sweepstakes, all over the year after we bought the bed.

This is our tenth year owning this bed, and it's just as sturdy and functional as it was the day we bought it. Zero wear and tear. The nice thing about a chambered air mattress is that it weighs less than 15 pounds. Super-easy to change the sheets and "make the bed" every day.

We stayed at a Marriott Renaissance hotel and really loved the bed. We found out that they sell the mattresses from their luxury brands so we bought one and love it. We have had it for several years now. They occasionally have sales. Shop Marriott Mattresses | King, Queen, Twin Sizes | Marriott Bonvoy Boutiques

We were very happy with the process, service and product we received from the Original Mattress Factory. Granted, we purchased in Virginia Beach before we moved here, but any location of this company should provide the same level of service. They make their own product locally and stand by it. They have a local store here in The Villages, 934 Bichara Boulevard, The Villages, FL 32159. At least stop by and talk to them!

I like firm mattresses but I accidentally ordered a super firm one by DrHard. It felt a lot like I was sleeping on the kitchen floor with a thin rug under me. Due to certain events happening at the time I could not return the mattress. But later I bought a Saatva mattress topper which magically changed the mattress into a cloud. I also have a Casper memory foam mattress which I find is way too soft for me but my daughter loves it. So I keep it on one bed for her. It really depends on what you like and if you are a hot sleeper or not etc.

spd2918 06-30-2025 11:48 PM

I used to wear out top mattresses in 3 years. I could feel the springs in my ribs. I bought a sleep number 18 years ago and it still feels great. My wife likes a pillow top, so she uses an insert and changes it every 4 to 5 years. It can be dismantled and laundered.

Any part of a sleep number can be individually replaced if needed. We just have not needed it.

Get the entry level Sleep Number (C2?).

We have a Nectar Hybrid and it’s the best mattress we’ve owned.

I have slept on the P6 ( Yes, the SAME number) for 30 years. I am on my 4th mattress and still love it. I have one in VA, FL and went from a King when married to a split King then a Queen. The sheets are easy to change and I can adjust the firmness of the mattress to suit me. The P6 is not the top of the line nor the bottom; I just know it's the model that suits my back and I don't like pillow toppers although they offer them. Their sheets are awesome too.

I couldn’t sleep on C4 I would be worried about it exploding!

Have had a sleep number bed for 15 years, still like new, and we love it. Separate controls so we each have the firmness/softness that works for each of us.

expensive but worth the investment

We have a split king from the Original Mattress Factory. It has been awesome.

mdmurrell 07-01-2025 05:30 AM

We bought a Stearns & Foster mattress with options to raise the head or foot positions. It’s the best bed we’ve ever owned. We sleep like new born babies.

Wow, good to know!

NoMo50 07-01-2025 07:02 AM

Here's a little diversion to think about: An average person sheds enough skin cells each day to add about one pound per year to a mattress. So, two people sharing the same bed for ten years will have deposited about 20 pounds of dead skin into their mattress! Plus, skin cells are a food source for dust mites. Sorry for any nightmares these thoughts might cause!

merrymini 07-01-2025 07:14 AM

You can keep your mattress clean and dry by using a moisture bamboo mattress cover with moisture proof barrier. Available on line. Very comfortable and washable. Would not sleep on a mattress without one.

If you like your old bed and know the brand I would stick with that. That’s what my wife and I did when we moved to here. We bought the same brand and model that we had in our old home.

Ski Bum 07-01-2025 08:40 AM

Another vote for Sleep Number for all of the reasons OBB posted. Expensive, but I fully expect it to last 20 years.

SoCalGal 07-01-2025 09:40 AM

Only buy a mattress that offers a sleep trial—the longer, the better—so you can return it at the manufacturer's expense if you don't like it.

J1ceasar 07-01-2025 11:32 AM

Mattress companies are notorious for putting on different labels for different chain stores so you cannot compare, my suggestion is to ask them how many springs does it have, how thick is the foam.
What's the return policy and what's the guarantee policy and only then can you compare apples to apples

We bought two bad mattresses down here, one from Babbettes and one from a mattress store. They became lumpy within 3 years and hurt my back. Be aware that the warranty for mattresses is often prorated and before stores honor it they set up appointments, measure the “topography “ of the mattress, and render a decision. Meanwhile, you are in agony. We went back to our trusted mattress source in Michigan : Michigan Discount Mattress near Farmington. They have a huge show room of many mattresses, and can custom to your desires. I wanted a firm one with coils and cooling materials. I had bought a mattress and box spr previously. They suggested one similar to a Dreamcloud with cooling. Perfect, so we ordered it. The king size was shipped in a box. We rolled it into the bedroom and placed the shrink wrapped mattress on top of our box spring. I cautiously cut the protective wrapper off, expecting a sudden expansion/explosion. It acted more like a Thermarest, slowly expanding and unrolling. The first night it was great. The second night it was fully expanded and even better. This was 5-6 years ago. I still can’t believe they can shrink up a king mattress with a coil layer. Don’t be afraid to try one of the newer mattresses shipped in a box.

Runway48 07-01-2025 12:56 PM

Bought our last mattress several years ago through Costco.com. They had a good selection to choose from, at very competitive prices (it's Costco). Many with extensive reviews by customers. We picked one that we thought would work for us. They delivered and installed and carted off the old one. A polite crew did the delivery. Still happy with our choice.

Bwanajim 07-01-2025 02:34 PM

Nectar is great!!! And they give you a 365 day full warranty. If you're unhappy anytime before that, you get a full refund. Look them up.
