Do we really need 57 variations of Tide detergent?

The other day my wife asked me to pick up some Tide laundry detergent. I thought Tide was Tide and I just had to figure out which size to buy. Nothing to it!

I was wrong. When I went to the store, there were dozens of Tide laundry detergents! According to the website there are actually 57 separate Tide products!!

I didn’t buy it because I wasn't sure which one she wanted!

57 variations of one laundry detergent seems excessive!

CMD (can’t make decision) was actually a grant to study of highly intelligent students, with “lack of common sense” for mundane decisions.

Actual task to pick up a pound of ground round. Study group answer.
They only had ground hamburger or ground chuck, so no purchase.

Sadly I will admit one of boys dated top in her field young women Harvard graduate, with two PHDs and MD, by age 24.
She could make split second decisions in her field, but send her to the grocery, for something specific, CMD was her downfall. He stopped dating her after 2 years, not because of CMD, or lack of common sense.

Her downfall, She chewed with her mouth open:1rotfl:

That's funny! Tide is our go to detergent no matter how complicated it is for the inexperienced shopper.:pepper2:

They have different flavors for the tide pod eaters :)

Pick it by fat content. The lower fat product will likely be ground round.

After almost 54 years of marriage I know the answer to the OP question.

Its a female thing. Average male could care less.

How much less? Asking for a random stranger?

I don’t like tide, it makes me itch.

Have you tried all 57 varieties??

For a Tide detergent that minimizes itching, Tide Free & Gentle is the best choice.

These are the questions in life you really spend time contemplating and asking the free world?

Yes. It happened to me and I started thinking that we live in a world that has too many choices. Wouldn’t 25 types of Tide be more than enough? This is clearly a first world problem.

Psychologist Barry Schwartz, in The Paradox of Choice (2004), argues this can make people less happy.

And some people read the question and even respond.

CybrSage 07-25-2025 06:17 AM

Yep, the paralysis of choice.
Personally, when in doubt, I get the cheapest.

jimhoward 07-25-2025 06:19 AM

There is a weird reason why so many Tide variants are offered. It’s not because they are all needed or all sell well. It’s because they want to create a bigger footprint on the store shelves. By offering so many different products the shopper walking down the detergent aisle sees nothing but Tide products.

This one is currently the top-rated laundry detergent, with a rating of 84/100.
Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release
Four of the top five are also called Tide, but that one is the top-rated. The others are also good. None of those are pods, which are a bit lower rated. NOTE: this sells for $13 at WalMart and Target but for $30 on Amazon! Yes,THIRTY. I use a Persil, from Target (bought online) that is highly-rated but unscented. Supposedly. It doesn’t make my clothes reek of some fake perfume, but they do smell like petroleum cleaning products.

Switter 07-25-2025 08:02 AM

I use All free and clear. It is the only detergent I have used so far that has no scent. Even tide's version of this still has a smell. I dislike the smell of any laundry detergent. I also dislike the smell of dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener as well, so I never use them.

Once in a while I'll run my towels or anything that smells musty through a wash cycle using ammonia instead of detergent. Obviously, you don't mix this with bleach but it works great for removing musty smells from fabrics. You have to be careful of the fabric types you use it on though.

I went back to using powder Tide and I can't believe how much cleaner my clothes are. Especially anything white like socks. To me, the difference is quite noticeable!

I vaguely remember an article or TV segment on this subject. Manufactures also FIGHT to have their products placed on the eye-level shelves. Who knew that was a thing?

I only use eco friendly products.

XXL. in camo.

Velvet 07-25-2025 06:42 PM

My husband (when he was alive) would carefully video tape EVERY model of Tide in the store, send me the video then phone and ask which is the one to bring home. He remembered the second time.

I get the one that is easy on natural fibers. Throw the pod in the tumble washer, toss in the cat, hit "normal". He comes out clean and smelling good.
Then before he gets his senses back, into the dryer, "airfluff" setting.
Balloons stick to him like glue.

collie1228 07-25-2025 07:31 PM

We are all spoiled from the many choices we have. My pet peeve is chain restaurant menus. Do we really need a five or six page menu to choose dinner? Too many choices tend to be frustrating.

bioman419 07-26-2025 07:37 AM

Cereal Too !

Speaking of choices, have you walked down the cereal isle?

Just take a walk down that aisle and look at all the plastic. Try and find detergent in a biodegradable cardboard box. I refuse to buy the bottles.

I hear you.! I take the laundry to the pond, soak it for a while, then pound it on a gator head.
It's a lot of work. My whites aren't really white, and everything smells abit. But I'll I don't want to contribute to plastic proliferation.
