I see it everyday.

Walkers / Runners walking in the wrong direction on the "cart paths" (whatever you want to call the paths).

Walkers / Runners in the cart lane on roads when there is a sidewalk right next to them.

Which is a clear violation of Florida statute 316.130 sec 3 and they can be cited for it. I particularly like those that want to play chicken with a 600 lb. cart coming at them at 20 mph.

To this day, the most egregious event I've ever heard of here was the lady walking in a golf cart lane (her friends were on the sidewalk). 2 golf carts approached and the first one swerved out of the way in time, but the 2nd one couldn't react quick enough and hit the woman, who died. The deputies literally ticketed the golf cart driver while the victim was breaking 2 laws.

Perhaps they checked the golf cart and found it was capable of exceeding 20 mph.

Way I read it the diamond lanes are considered the street/road so should be walking on edge facing traffic ready to get out of way if hazard presents itself. Not blunder down in middle of diamond lane or walking two or more abreast. Actually MMP path by definition is a road private or not same rules apply IMO. But we know why my opinion worth…..:oops:

Your opinion is usually reasonable. In this case, there is a specific law that covers this, so no opinion is needed:

316.130 Pedestrians; traffic regulations.—
(3) Where sidewalks are provided, no pedestrian shall, unless required by other circumstances, walk along and upon the portion of a roadway paved for vehicular traffic.

The citation for the applicable Florida was provided. Suggest referring to it prior to offering an opinion.

Since we do not have a golf cart and we never walk on an MMP and we never walk on the sidewalk in any village, I guess we are pleased to say we do not have a dog in this fight.

So what saying you never walk out of house. If you walk on street/road rule definitely apply?

When we walk out of our house, we stay in our yard. We have a wonderful life.

Actually they ticketed her for failure to yield. I hope the poor woman fought it because it's bad enough she's got to live with that the rest of her life, but to get ticketed because the other person was breaking 2 laws is absolutely absurd.

Any place you go, walkers are to face traffic. Here they don't know rule and worst of all not paying attention to what's going on around them.

They need us to educate them one by one. Of course they would have to take their ear buds out first. Maybe a hand gesture will do it!

Florida Statute 316.130 addresses pedestrian traffic regulations and states that pedestrians should obey traffic control devices and instructions. However, it doesn't explicitly forbid pedestrians from using multi-modal paths when sidewalks exist.

There are no sidewalks alongside MMPs. The statute applies to cart and bike lanes along roads, which it does EXPLICITLY forbid. The lanes along these roads are NOT multimodal paths, they ARE cart and bike lanes.

Walking and Running on multi-modal paths in the direction of oncoming carts is done for safety reasons. It is more comfortable to see oncoming carts under control as opposed to hearing carts coming up behind you not knowing if they see you or not. Generally, it also provides for a friendly villages wave and acknowledgement.

Some runners use the lanes because they are generally softer than the concrete sidewalks to run on, especially if they are running a long distance and have sensitive feet.

So what is the law when there is no sidewalk?

Multi modal path, not golf cart path. Walkers have right of way over everyone. Bicycles have right of way over golf carts.

The slower the user, the greater the right of way. Easy as that.

Well, those runners are violating the law. Florida statue 316.130 DOES NOT grant an exception for runners who believe asphalt is softer. Grass and sand are even softer yet, go run there but not in a lane designated for vehicular traffic

As long time runner, I don't get it either. I run on Odell where there's a sidewalk and a cart lane.

I see a few people that insist on walking in the cart lane. The odd part is, the people I see doing it are women, who are normally more safety conscious than men.

As I said before, we do not own a golf cart.

When we go to a store, we park in front of the store and carefully walk thru the parking lot. There are no rules in a parking lot. We keep our eyes open and do not get distracted.

Of course. Not exactly rocket surgery.

I do a lot of walking and see people walking on MMPs with traffic approaching them from the rear. Several times I've stopped and mentioned that they should be walking AGAINST approaching traffic instead of with it. I follow it up with "believe me, the way some people drive on these MMPs means that you WANT to see them coming". It always elicits a smile. So far no one has taken umbrage over my advice.

you are correct. The issues would be resolved in a courtroom. The crucial point i believe would be in determining negligence on behalf of the second driver. It would be pointed out that if the first driver could have avoided the pedestrian why couldn't the second driver who fatally struck the pedestrian who was illegally in the street?

Playing chicken or asserting the right of way? When you see a pedestrian, you should pass in other lane if safe to do so. If you can’t pass safely, you should stop your cart until you can pass or the until the pedestrian has cleared from in front of you.

What about those who have their backs to traffic??? Total idiots.

Majority golf cart drivers do that.

Majority Pedestrians need follow status, and not walk in middle and NEVER walk two abreast when traffic coming. That’s not sharing path that hogging it.

When I walk I always step off the MMP onto the grass for approaching traffic, which is always appreciated.

Situational Awareness
 

If we all used a little bit of Situational Awareness when using multi-modal paths, we’d all be better off and TV would be a more pleasant, friendly town.

Golf carts, yes you may go 20mph, but if you’re coming around a blind corner or entering a tunnel on a MMP, slow down.

Walkers, you know you’re sharing the path with golf carts, walk against the traffic so you can SEE and HEAR what’s headed towards you. If you walk with traffic you cannot SEE nor can you HEAR if you’re wearing ear buds. Plus if you’re walking WITH traffic yes, you’re putting yourself at grave risk and holding up vehicles behind you.

Cyclists, know your capabilities and limitations. You’re too fast for the walkers and too slow for the golf carts. Unfortunately, cyclists need to be especially vigilant.

Finally, as my dad taught me, you may have the right of way, but never insist on it or you may be DEAD RIGHT. Just be nice. It’s actually will make for a much better day if you are.

MMP is a road, a path to one point to another used as transportation is road (look it up) therefore roads rules apply private road or not.
