Lost cat - large orange male tabby

Hello,

My cat, Oliver, escaped accidentally from his house on Whiting Way Thursday Feb. 17, 2011. Whiting Way is off Worth Circle and off Talley Ridge.

Oliver has last seen last night, Sunday, Feb. 20 on Addison in Glenbrook at about 6:45 pm.

Oliver is a large, about 16 pounds, adult male with an orange coat and tabby markings. He did have a collar on, with a tag to my cell phone, 703-217-3785, or to his local number of 352-205-7690.

Oliver is friendly, but a bit shy. I also imagine he is quite hungary and thirsty at this point. Please, try to get him into a container (box/bag/whatever) and call us. One of us will come over and pick him up.

As soon as I can figure out how to post pictures on this, I have recent photos. Right now, he looks like every other large orange tabby you may have seen.

Thanks ever so much,

His heartbroken human mama

I'm sorry to hear that your orange tabby got out of your house and is now on the "lan". Someone suggested leaving your garage door open enough for him to return to. Another suggestion was to leave food outside for him too. There is a website that you can post his picture too (I don't remember what it is called, but perhaps someone else does!) Also the local Villages radio station will make an announcement for you about your missing pet. I have an orange tabby cat too, and I would be heartbroken if my cat got out too. I feel for you.

redwitch 02-22-2011 07:51 PM

I hope he comes home soon. The last missing kitty was hiding out in a neighbor's garage. Here's hoping your guy is doing the same. Of course, with this lovely weather he may just be catting around.

If you haven't done so, do put up some flyers, especially at the mailboxes. Since he is a friendly guy, someone who sees him might be able to coax him to them with some food.

As painful as it is, give him up to two weeks to come home before you start thinking the worst. In nice weather like this, it isn't uncommon for a kitty to stay out quite awhile -- there's enough critters to catch for food, water from sprinklers (yuck here!), dew, etc.

In the meantime, many hugs! I know how it hurts to have a beloved cat on the prowl.

BowleesCreekYachtClub 02-22-2011 07:59 PM

Just been through this with our cat. Call the neighborhood watch. Call WVLG -they are very good. Get an 8x10 picture of him printed at Walgreens ($3) and put a lost notice up at the local mail box with your name and phone number. Walk around in the morning and meet all the dog walkers - word will get around and they will all watch out for Oliver. If he is timid he may find a dark spot in the daytime and not come out - best time to find him is in the early morning or later in the afternoon. If no one chased him away from home there is a good chance he will keep the scent and find his way back. You can try leaving the garage door open about 10 inches and leave a can of cat food and treats just inside. I hope I'm not stating the obvious. You do get attached to them - don't you? Good luck. Allan.

I feel so bad for you. I have a can of cat food at the ready and would be glad to help you look.

Please leave your garage door up a little and put the tuna out. They are clever creatures and will find some food and water. We have a shy one too and I betcha your kittie is hiding out.

We had a fella who knocked over an open suitcase on him in our box room and remained missing for a week with no food or water.

He survived and lived for many years after.

Please tell us if we can help and keep bumping this thread.

Good luck finding Oliver! Hopefully, he will be found as quickly as the last escape artist was that was listed as "The Villages Most Wanted...Feline!"
Muffin and I are wishing you the best. Keep us posted and we're hoping for good news!

Is there no news? No sightings? We'll come over and walk your area tomorrow. Allan & Jocelyne.

Large Orange Male Tabby

Everyone,

Thank you for the kind words.

Oliver is still missing.

I have been running an ad in the Lost & Found section of the Sun and also alerted the radio, who has been excellent. I am trying to find my kitty and get him contained.

There was a sighting last week in the neighbhorhood, we chased him down but apparently he is a lot faster than we were and then he disappeared again. I rather think he is either hiding during the day in a storm drain or has found a really good hiding place. I have been putting food and water out of the little guy every night. Something has been eating the food and some of the water but so far, no Ollie.

This coming weekend I will be doing yard work so maybe he can pick up my scent and come to me versus the driving around that I did last time. There are many kind, conscientious people in the Villages and some of them have been leaving food out for my little buddy. If you live nearby and would like food, I can arrange for it. Please text me.

Thanks so much....and truly hoping I find Oliver soon.

Glad to hear that there's been a sighting. He will come home, honest he will! I have one adverturer. She once got out and didn't come home for two weeks. To put it mildly, I was worried sick, especially since there were a lot of coyotes where we lived. When it started raining on a daily basis, she apparently had enough, came in through the garage and was asleep on my bed when I got home from work.

Do be careful about too many people leaving food out for him -- it will give him less of a reason to come home. Just keep your garage door cracked enough for him to get in and leave food there for him. That's really your best bet.

K9-Lovers 03-01-2011 11:15 PM

Leave your garage door open just a crack, open a can of tuna IN OIL (not water) and he will find his way into your garage.

Yes, we love cats, too.

BowleesCreekYachtClub 03-02-2011 07:28 AM

Don't know what else to say - just hope he comes home. Good to hear he has been seen. Good luck, Allan.

Ditto.

Just keep thinking what they always say..

"And the cat came back."

Kindest thoughts and hugs.

When my cat went missing I would go out very early in the morning and at dusk when it was quiet and call her name. This went on for a while and one morning I heard her cry out. She was close by hiding under a log and terrified. Please try this. My cat was very shy and spooked easily. They usually stay close to home but hidden. I'm sure she had cried out before but I couldn't hear her. Good luck.

Actually it's not all that far as the crow flies. It's a possibility especially since the owner said the cat was chased and ran. Hopefully you get a response.

chuckinca 03-11-2011 08:31 PM

Put out fliers offering a $1,000 reward and you will have many, many orange cats to choose from.

(that happened in our neighborhood in Calif about 15 years ago when a only nephew lost his elderly aunt's cat - cat turned up in a neighbors garage about two doors away)

Oliver, also known as Ollie, is still missing.

I did get a call from a Rec Assistant at the Mulberry Grove Rec Ctr earlier this week that an orange tabby had been seen in the bushes. The assistant said she'd try and get a humane trap from VCCCD on Wedgewood Lane and place a bit of canned tuna to see if she can't trap Ollie. Many people, bless them all, have called to say they've seen an orange-ish red tabby but so far, it hasn't been the right cat. I am missing my not so little 12-15 pound kitty.

Ollie has a bit of white under his chin, down his chest and extending to his belly. Otherwise an orangey-red color, about the color of butterscotch in a tabby pattern. Greenish eyes, as this photo shows.

re my cat-sighting in De La Vista North - my wife says she has seen that cat before so, sorry, it wasn't Oliver :-(

MPoole 03-14-2011 09:38 PM

I saw a white and orange cat in the Walmart on CR 466 yesterday, Sunday 3/13. It was in the parking lot on the side next to the liquor store (CR103 side). It was a fairly large cat. There is plenty of ground cover there and I noticed dumpsters in the rear of the building at that end. Hope this may help.

Oliver

Hello,

There was a sighting on Saturday, March 19. I am still hopeful. Starting this week, probably Tuesday, I will be running another ad in the Villages Sun, with a slightly different phone number on it. If someone sees Oliver, please call the number in the classified.

I am still hoping my sweet Ollie is still out there...somewhere.

starflyte1 03-20-2011 05:02 PM

Please tell us where yesterday's sighting was? Thanks. Pat

mjb902 03-20-2011 10:16 PM

Oliver

Saturday night's sighting was in the north Glenbrook area off Talley Ridge. Sigh, the cat seen had tortoise shell colored fur. A "tortie" is typically rusty orange, brown, black and white. "Torties" are typically female while dark orange or "red" tabbies like Oliver are typically male. Something to do with the genes.

I am running another ad this week, hopefully with his picture. Oliver is almost completely dark orange, about the color of rust, bordering on a reddish color. He does have some white under his chin, down his chest and in an irregular fashion, on his belly. When you first look at him, you'd probably be hard pressed to see the white. Also, when Ollie gets distressed he tends to lose whiskers.

Thanks to everyone who is out looking for Oliver.

I see you have Oliver posted with a picture on TV Pet Finder, why not put a link to that here?
Hope he comes home soon.

I saw the picture of Oliver in todays paper under Lost & Found. My heart goes out to you and all the effort you have put into finding him. We'll keep the faith and wait for his safe return.

last week while in the villages, my husband and I were driving on Bailey Trail and I noticed a tabby cat sitting near some bushes on a right side street off Bailey Trail, somewhere between Bethune Way and St Charles, don't know if your Oliver would have traveled that far, but you never know. I do hope you find him, I know how heartbreaking it can be to lose a pet. Wishing you the best.

I'm hoping and praying for the day that I can place a nice "WAHOO" graphic on this thread for Oliver! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sad055.gif

Oliver

The prior poster suggested a link to an The Villages Pet Finder website with Oliver's details. While I am happy to share the link, some of the details of the ad are incorrect.

If you see Oliver, please call either me on my cell at (703) 217-3785, or a friend, Sandy, at (352) 406-9518. Even better would be to try and coax him into an enclosed space using a bit of tuna. One teaspoon should do the trick. Ollie is vaccinnated and generally, timid but friendly.

I do appreciate everyone's concern, prayers and good thoughts.

There was a sighting two nights ago that Oliver was seen around the Glenbrook postal station. I am continuing to work on his capture and safe return.

Oliver Sighting

Someone saw Oliver in the last 2 days near the Glenbrook postal station. I have had other reports of people seeing him there or nearby as well. Each time I have gone to the Glenbrook postal station Oliver has not been there.

Please be aware that there are two orange tabby cats in the vicinity. Oliver is one, and the other is a long-hair orange cat.

The long hair cat is feral. I know as I earlier found him in a humane trap. I had him neutered and vaccinated against various feline issues, including rabies. When the vets do that to feral cats, they "tip"one ear to indicate that particular kitty has already been neutered. This is visible from a distance. Oliver's ears, by contrast, are in tact (or at least they were the last time I saw him...). The tipping lets the viewer know that this particular cat has already been taken care of and is feral. Against my better judgment, I was told to re-release him in roughly the same neighborhood he was trapped in, which was in the general vicinity of Glenbrook.

If you decide to approach Oliver, I'd suggest you very, very quietly and slowly approach him and extend a couple of fingers first. That way, in the way most cats do, he can "sniff you out first. Oliver is a domesticated cat so he won't run if you approach him slowly. A feral will take off like a rocket the moment they see a human and./or a human with a dog, or hear a human say hello.

What I need someone to do is to try and get Oliver into a container or enclosed space so I can come pick him up. That could be a cardboard box, a carrier, or a small enclosed space. If it is a box, please just make certain Oliver can breathe. If you have a little bit of dry cat food to entice him that might help. I am certain he must be quite hungry.

I still miss my little Ollie so much and appreciate all the good people of The Villages.

K9-Lovers 03-25-2011 12:31 AM

If you want to entice Oliver, don't use dry food. Open a can of tuna IN OIL and that will command the attention of any cat.

(From my old cat-trapping days in Animal Control).

mjb902 03-25-2011 09:57 AM

Enticing Oliver

The last poster is correct -- tuna packed in oil, not water is any stray's dish of choice. Dry kibble will work in a pinch, tho'.

Again, thanks, one and all, I am hopeful either he will come back or be found, soon!

Your last note brought tears to my eyes. You have done so much good for the feral cats and now Ollie is lost. Do you think that putting a humane trap at the Post Office once again would trap Oliver if he is in the vicinity? He would be hungry and he may go for it. I'm praying that he is found soon.
