Ice and Rec centers

While checking out today at Publix with two bags of ice and some groceries, the man behind me in line said that I should just go to one of the rec centers and get ice from there. He then told me that we all pay for it....

I guess that I thought the ice at the rec centers was there for when a group had a party or meeting - not for us to fill up our coolers whenever we need some extra ice. It really never occurred to me to go there for ice... and it sounds a bit iffy to me even now.

Comments, please?

JenAjd 03-20-2011 01:43 PM

That sounds a bit tacky to me! Also...can you imagine "if" everyone in T.V. did that? No ice in the machines there. Ice isn't THAT expensive--buy a bag or two.

chuckster 03-20-2011 01:50 PM

I agree, tacky. should be for the use of groups using the facility only.

Challenger 03-20-2011 02:58 PM

Tacky isn't the word. Inconsiderate would be more appropriate.

graciegirl 03-20-2011 03:06 PM

It speaks volumes to me about a person if that is what they would do.

I can't say WHY I feel that way, but I do.

I wouldn't. ever.

Sparky-30 03-20-2011 03:48 PM

No, not so, we are putting on a Bingo game at Mulberry Tuesday evening, we had to go up and sit with administrator who will provide ice for us in a big cooler.
How cheap is that, cant buy his own ice.

Ladies, lets load the squirt guns and go catch him in the act! For him, we'll make it ice water.

Dear friends,

I thought as much. Two bags of ice cost less than $4...

BnB - if I am going to aim low, I think I want one of those water bazookas!

I'm usually ready and willing to stand in when you ladies start getting ready to get together and make your attack, but in this case the cheap-skate can take it himself! I wonder if there is a squirt gun that can be adopted to shoot ice cubes? http://www.smilies.our-local.co.uk/i.../sign_ouch.gif

LOL - Sky guy - you may have noticed that the genteel and generous Graciegirl is behaving better than I!

redwitch 03-20-2011 11:03 PM

My water cannon can't shoot ice cubes but I could certainly fill it with VERY cold water (think melted ice cubes). Some people really get what they deserve and he definitely deserves something!

Probably the same mentality of those who take the candles out of Seabreeze on a regular basis because they must assume they are free or something. I had a rec guy tell me that they replace about a case of candles a week.

It is just a matter of how you look at things. I saw a woman stop her golf cart and run out in the middle of the street to pick up a pop can.

I think most of us are proud of our beautiful place and get so angry when someone does stuff like that.

And another thing. If you cannot afford to buy your own candles, than don't have any or don't move here if you don't have enough money to live the way you think you must..STEALING CANDLES. DANG.:(:(:(

memason 03-21-2011 10:33 AM

This might be a job for the "POSSE" .... :D

DDoug 03-21-2011 01:51 PM

ice

Something you should consider. If the ice sets to long it grts old and tastes bad that is the reason they let you get for free. Keeps fresh ice in the bin. Dont worry there will always be enough ice. Not sure but I think those are 400 pound machines.

Hi DDoug,

As I see it, the purpose of ice at the rec centers is for use at the rec. centers. There are fitness classes, dance classes, arts and crafts, card games, pool games, club activities, neighborhood parties and other special events going on throughout the day and evening at these centers.

If everyone who lived in TV felt free to go get free ice from the rec centers whenever they needed ice, there would not always be enough ice.

And what if there is left over ice sometimes? Just because we assume that someone else has more than they need does not give us a right to take it! If it did, then we couldn't complain if anyone came into our homes and took whatever they assumed we didn't need!

K9-Lovers 03-21-2011 03:32 PM

Watch out, DDoug . . . the Squirt Gun Squad will take aim. Stop taking that ice!

PT I guess that means I won't be planting new flowers around the house this year cause as soon as I heard about the free ice I naturally assumed you were welcome to take the flowers home that somebody plants for you along the roadside roundabouts.:D

Flip Flop Forever 03-21-2011 08:38 PM

A checker at Publix in Colony told me the same thing two years ago. I decided that she was a Villages- wanna- be who was forced to live someplace else.

Mintjulep 03-26-2011 11:06 AM

My husband works at Bacall Rec Center, and people bring their coolers in all the time to fill with ice. It's only a problem when folks bring in HUGE coolers on a day that there is a big event scheduled at the rec center. Then he politely asks them to go instead to Canal St. or another close center so he can reserve Bacalls ice for the event.

Bogie Shooter 03-26-2011 11:17 AM

I do not think it is right to fill a cooler with ice at any of the rec centers.

Mudder 03-26-2011 11:22 AM

I agree with Bogie Shooter.

katezbox 03-26-2011 05:58 PM

I am with you both...

paulandjean 03-27-2011 07:07 AM

ice

Do not think I will lose any sleep over it.

I agree.

AND I just read your TOTV name more carefully. I thought that you were Paula and Jean. (I speed read) I see that you are Paul and Jean. Just thought you were two girls for a long time, see that you are a boy and a girl.

Now I have to revise the visual in my mind. Let me see, Paul has dark curly hair and Jean is blonde. I imagined you were both redheads.

Gracie. Who wastes time on here. (Avoiding packing to go north)

Did I imply that I would? Just wanted to know others knew of this policy and their opinions.... The purpose (I think) of a forum)...

paulandjean 03-27-2011 11:34 AM

"Do not think I would lose any sleep over this" Said "I" not You. and that is "my opinion"

I wanted opinions as to whether this was a fair policy - not as to whether you felt it was important... Sorry to waste your precious time...or sleep....

memason 03-28-2011 07:55 AM

OK.... I'm gonna take a different view...

While I have never gotten ice at a rec center, I think it's a pretty nice little perk. I wouldn't go there to get 50 lbs for a party, but if I were driving by and needed a little ice for my cart cooler, I'd have no problem stopping in to get some, now that I know it's available....

Not sure why anyone would have a problem with this ??? It's just another benefit of this lovely place we have chosen to live...

Can it get any better than this ??? I think not!

Just saying.....

MEM - My initial question was to see if getting ice for parties accepted was a generally-accepted procedure (was I the only dope paying for ice?) or not. I had two big bags in my shopping cart. The guy who gave me the "tip" said "after all, we pay for it."

There will always be folks looking to get something for nothing. They are the same people who complain to the restaurant waitstaff/manager about every meal in the hopes of getting something comped.

I doubt anyone would care about getting ice for the cooler in your cart. However, if all the folks currently buying ice were to go to the rec centers, they may not be able to keep up with demand, there may not be enough ice for rec center events and the cost of their water (and possibly our amenities fees) could increase.

I know you're right, but someone in the rec centers should know how to say "no" to such ridicules requests.

You are right memason! The people who work there know when they arrive for work what is scheduled for their shift and if all the ice will be needed.

Most of the people I know get their ice at the rec centers (including us). But do ask if it's okay to fill whatever size cooler they bring, so as not take ice needed for an event.
