Has anyone had a pergula constructed, and if so, could you recommend someone to do one?

I am still in the procrastination mode. I have had estimates from Magellan, White Aluminum and Ehmann Const in Summerfield and another that escapes my memory. I originally intended to start the first of the year, and have yet to do so. I have several considerations as to placement and size that I have not resolved. It will be associated with a corner of my house and compliment a water feature, but all the various estimate options, such as material (alum, wood or vinyl) ground surface (cement, sod, pavers) are still in question. I will probably (there goes my procrastination again) decide and start by midf-summer. We think they are a wonderful enhancement to a house.

I would love one of those as well! What are the estimated costs of one?? I haven't yet pursued it but would love one in the front (if the "powers that be" would allow it).

The only real stipulation I have read in the covenants is that it must be attached to the house.

I think you must be right. There are two, maybe three on south Odell, north side, (They back to Odell) maybe you could stop and ask them who did theirs.

We have a beautiful, free standing 10x12'x8' high pergola, totally maintenance free, powder-coated aluminum, sitting on a concrete pad. It cost $700 as a kit from a discount retailer (BJs). I was able to assemble it with a socket wrench, a step ladder and my wife steadying the legs as I connected the first roof pieces. Nothing heavy or strenuous. Completed in less than four hours. The 12x12 concrete pad was under a hot tub the previous owner had in a private side yard of our CYV. I finished it with ceramic tile.

The pergola is a perfect addition, and still looks new four years later. I searched the internet extensively. Vinyl and cedar pergolas are more expensive. If you'd like to see a photo, send me a PM with your email address.

Prices are per square foot, so indicating "what does one cost" is a varible answer. Yes, they do have to be attached to the house. And they do require submission to Architectural Review. My research convinced me that aluminum is the best bet. My landscaper got me in the pergola mood and wanted to include one in my original design and had a top notch carpenter to do so, but I did not want to go with wood. The do it yourself, with a kit, is certainly a good option and it is my guess that having a contractor do that would double the price, plus cost of surface. Get on the internet and spend a few hours to become familar with what is out there before you contact anyone. It is always nice to be knowledgable of what it is you want and there are many many options. I probably saved 50 - 60 pictures of pergolas to my computer for later review and comparisons. I am actually surprised they are not more popular, especially since The Villages use them in their infrastructure around the property.

If we do one it would be DIY I think they're attractive! For us, it would possibly screen the hot sun from mid-day to sunset. Have to convince the spouse though, that we should do it. Cost would be a factor...but I personally like the wood look. All this to be determined!

ijusluvit, the wind doesn't bother your pergola? Or are the legs in footings in the ground?

We would like to put one on the east side of our our CYV, basing it on the existing patio. Jusluvit, is that a strong enough base? Not sure how thick that is, but once back in TV, could dig down and find out.

Up north, of course, you have to worry about the frost depth - footings needed to be 4 feet deep in WI if I'm remembering correctly, but less in central Ohio. In Florida, probably just need to make sure the base is strong (thick) enough to support the weight?

I'd be interested in getting a contractor to either do the kit for us, or do something similar, depending on cost.

Did you ever start the pergola?

I was up at Sam's (in VA) yesterday and they had one on display for $399.00. It was cedar and you have to assemble it yourself. I am sending you a PM as we are also interested in putting one in yard just as soon as we get there!

I plan on installing one in an inside corner on the back of our home. It will be about 9x12. I will do it myself, as I do everything myself.

I will definitely go with powder coated Aluminum. At 53 years old I am at a time in my life where my goal is to do things right the first time and do it in a way where there is minimum or no long term maintenance.

Cedar might look nice new, but it would need a very labor intensive restaining/resealing every two years or so to keep it that way. I strongly prefer not to have to do that.

Construction is to start this Mon (Oct 3) and being done by Magellan Constr. They advertiswe as The Pergola Kings. My landscaping pros, Villages Palms is going to top it off with pavers for base ande a walk to back door as well as adjoining additional landscaping. Probably be 3 weeks befor it is totally finished. I'll attach a photo when finishe3d off by both contractors.

Would you share the size, material and what price you got? Thanks

According to the neighbor the pergola must be able to withstand hurricane force winds. He had to have an architetural application approved. It does need to attach to the house to pass their inspection. They also had a wall erected on our side for privacy. HMMMMM. Guess I talk too much. It is beautiful but the only regret I have is that it seriously blocks my view and I like to see the other folks in the back.

It is 11x14, white aluminum attached to the house with supra-gutter. $3000 includng permits, arch design paperwork and approval.

Yes and was very happy with their work. Villages Palms Landscape coming by tomorrow to design and complete project and measure for pavers and walkway to lanai. Talked to neighbor tonight and theirs is going in a few days away. I would never have begun to do myself what they did. Their method of attaching to house and workmanship were superior, in my estimation. To avoid a neighborhood traffic jam, pm me and when it is finished I'll send you my address.

It would be great to post some pictures of the project when completed....

It's going to be a few weeks as we are going out of town a couple times in next few weeks, but I certainly will.

There isn't usually any room to put any structure on the side of a CYV unlsee you have a corner lot. Check your setbacks on your siteplan.

we just ordered one built by T & D. They were the only ones to build what we wanted. Real wood.

Pergola's are not allowed to be built in the front in The Villages

My lanai faces north so one side of the lanai faces west. So sun comes into the lanai in the late afternoon/early evening. Will a pergola on the western side of the lanai (which would be attached to the back of the house) do a good job at minimizing the sun into the lanai? Is there a particular design that keeps out the sun more than others?

If you Google "vinyl pergolas" you'll come up with hundreds of kits, sellers and ideas for pergolas. They have pergola kits rated for 140 mph winds, and up to 4' of snow loads. I had no idea that there's a whole pergola industry out there!

We had one installed about a month ago by Magellan. Beautiful work, completed in 2 days. We had ceiling fans, and several electrical outlets installed at the same time. These guys are local, and I recommend them highly.
