Meatloaf's Paradise

Didn't want to totally hijack the "the wife" thread but I just have to know. How many here have Paradise by the Dashboard Lights in their top ten of songs? It is my #1, all-time favorite. I cannot hear it play and not sing along (yes, even Harry Carey's part). I cannot play it while driving cause the pedal hits the metal and 100+ mph is a common event. I LOVE that song!!!

So, who else goes gaga over that song?

Bob45 05-18-2011 06:32 AM

It's definitely at the top of my top ten. One of the best.

Bob

memason 05-18-2011 07:23 AM

Let me sleep on it.... I'll give you my answer in the morning

buzzy 05-18-2011 07:31 AM

Definitely in my top ten. Saw Meat Loaf in concert a couple of years ago, mostly screaming unintelligible lyrics. Too bad.

redwitch 05-18-2011 07:32 AM

I gotta know right now. So, what's it gonna be, boy? Yes or no?

getdul981 05-18-2011 07:58 AM

Never heard of it. The only "Paradise" I've heard is by John Prine.

Red, I am totally NOT a Meatloaf fan...but love that song! I have the same problem while driving...

Good Morning, redwitch

As you can see, this is gmcneill.

I begin by saying thank you for your postings to TOTV. You often have a slightly different way of looking at things than I do, but I sincerely appreciate the perspective of someone whose opinion I respect.

The purpose of this message is to let you know that the broadcaster voice-over in "Paradise..." is not performed by Harry Carey but by Phil (the Scooter)Rizzuto, the long-time NY Yankee shortstop and radio announcer.

I just tried to address this issue privately because, well, I was trying to be tactful and discreet. But I see that you do not accept pm :(

You add so much to the totv. To correct a minor issue in "front of the class" might be interpreted by some the wrong way. I intend no disrespect at all. I just thought that you (and now all other posters) might appreciate knowing...

gmcneill

PS: I agree...Paradise is one of my all time favorites too!

Whalen 05-18-2011 08:55 AM

Don't worry gmcneil Red can take it. I was about to correct the post but you beat me to it.

redwitch 05-18-2011 09:05 AM

Actually, I appreciate the correction. I always thought it didn't quite sound like Harry but never bothered checking liner notes to see if my info (friend who introduced me to Paradise told me it was Harry) was correct. So, thanks for letting me know (but I do still know every dang word rofl).

Paradise by the Dashboard Light

I love the song and its my number #1 to watch, good story. I think this video is great, love the lady in green. Meatloaf is a big Dallas Cowboys fan.

Hey Red,

This is just more proof that you have impeccable taste. Paradise has always been near the top of my list. Great memories, including seeing an entire wedding party act it out.

Tom Hannon 05-18-2011 05:12 PM

"Paradise By The Dashboard Light" is on my top 10 for sure. I believe Todd Rundgren produced it. Remember the first time I heard it, I was at my shop and I stopped the machine to listen. Saw him in concert a few years ago. Terrific concert. Wonder what it would take to have Meatloaf (Harvey Ado) play at The Savannah Center.

This classic video help make MTV what it was. The early videos I remember are Meatloafs' "Paradise" Adam Ant's (???) (Someone help me here. Having a senior moment) Peter Wolf's (J. Geils) Centerfold and of course Michael Jacksons Thriller and Billy Jean.

Love this song and have seen Meatloaf in concert. Was the only time I ever saw my husband let loose and sing and act out at a wedding.

Good answer. lol

Yes, I love the song too. It's very clever.

Ohiogirl 05-18-2011 08:24 PM

Meatloaf?

I'm sorry, but the video (of Meatloaf) ruined it for me. My imagination was loads better. No one else noticed this?

chuckinca 05-18-2011 08:30 PM

Maybe you were expecting Robert Redford?

Gotta admit that the first time I saw Meat perform Paaradise, I was completely and totally grossed out. A cute girl climbing all over a sweaty male is just not sexy. (Heck, not even appetizing to me.) I absolutely refuse to watch a video of the song -- I can only imagine how gross it would be up close and personal. However, the song is great!

Barefoot 05-19-2011 12:27 AM

I love Paradise by the Dashboard Light. I also love everything by Dr. Hook, especially Sylvia's Mother!

Bill...my hearers can't separate the words out...Now, I am going to ask you to print the lyrics.

Meatloaf is not...well, I wouldn't call him...uh...classically handsome.

Perhaps a haircut?

LI SNOWBIRD 05-19-2011 05:36 AM

more Meatloaf...
"Would you offer yourself to the wolf with the red rose?"

redwitch 05-19-2011 05:49 AM

This is all time great album style rock and roll - it was so good that AM radio stations played it despite its length (and still do). I love the story of how Todd Rundgren supposedly tricked Phil Ruzutto into doing the baseball play-by-play by not telling him that it was a metaphor for sex. I read once that some Boston radio stations produced an alternate version of the song with a Red Sox announcer performing the baseball part. It's on my "All Time Classics" playlist in my ipod.

ohiogolf 05-19-2011 08:29 AM

For our 25th wedding anniversary we went to Las Vegas and were remarried by Elvis in the Graceland Chapel. During the vows Elvis asked me if I "want her, need her and love her". I looked at him and told him "Elvis, like Meatloaf said 'Two out of three ain't bad'." He cracked up.

I have Bad out of Hell album and Bat out of Hell 2 on my Ipod.

chuckinca 05-19-2011 08:43 AM

Todd Rundgren's not Robert Redford either - but can still turn out a great song or two.

You guys are not being fair. Todd is in the music business and that video is many years old. Many entertainers dress different in appearance than they would have, had they become an accountant or school teacher. If you look at old videos of Neil Diamond you will see his hair was long. Okay maybe he didn't have those eyebrows that Todd wore but again...it is entertainment.

Look back through the years at some of the gimmicks of entertainers. Elvis's sideburns, The Beatles long hair, Michael Jackson's glove, Dolly Parton's breast implants, Elton John's oversized glasses and colorful costumes and Alice Cooper ( a scratch golfer by the way) looked like a vampire. Let us forget Prince, Freddy Mercury and the group known as Kiss.

The Runt as Todd Runtgren was called, was a talented musician although he never reached his potential. Producing The Meatloaf "Bat Out Of Hell" album might be his most successful accomplisment. NOTE_ The "Hello It's Me" video was a song The Runt wrote for a previous group called "Nazz". In that group he was not the lead singer. Years later he recorded it himself.
