Weather Warnings
Yesterday and today, my weather radio has alerted us to a severe thunderstorm warning for Sumter county. In neither case, did I receive an alert from the Sumter County Code Red system.
This isn't the first time it hasn't called. Is anyone else getting the alerts??? |

Same looking storm line as yesterday. Unlike yesterday, today it is slipping south of Mallory so far.
I also have had no alerts on my phone. |
i kept hearing a warning in the background and i thought i was hearing the tv. but when i looked i saw it wasnt on! then i heard it again and its my ipad talking to me. i forgot i put that app on it. its called weather radio.and it warned me and i dont even have it turned on. its sitting on the table in sleep mode.

this is a good website. it will show whch way the cells are moving. |

An even better site which shows not only the cells but it labels them and shows (in the table underneath) the percent chance of hail, severe hail, storm height, speed etc.
The one problem is that the limit of this particular radar is the middle of TV in Sumter county. But worth a look for weather buffs: http://www.wunderground.com/radar/ra...=9999&smooth=1 |

I'm in Scotland and my I pod touch went off. I have Weather Radio Alert on it and it's gone off for Sumter County area...thunderstorm watch. Code Red doesn't ring for watches. I've just looked at my Wesh Weather alert page and that, too, has issued a watch and not warning for Sumter County. Lake County has a severe thunderstorm warning. Of course, you guys and gals are there so you're more up to date on what's going on.
Stay safe. |
I use all of the sites mentioned at times. The Weather Channel has a neat feature in that you can add your street address, which really tells you how close the path is. Not sure intellicast can do that.
Go to this link and then click on "Your address" or "Go to a new location" link http://www.weather.com/weather/map/i...FL+32162?role= Nothing like some good weather map talk  |

this is a good one for the 'big' picture. |
Doesn't look like any rain in Buttonwood yet. Darn!
|
Sounds like it may be a good idea to re-enroll in Sumter County's alert system!
Yesterday one severe thunderstorm warning on my weather radio (after it'd been storming overhead for at least 15 minutes!). But, no phone call. Today (so far) two weather radio warnings, but no phone call! I almost never use my cell phone, but I'm betting there are several messages there; I'll check it out later! Good to have the rain. Just wish it would rain gently all day. Don't like warnings! SWR :beer3: |

I'm not sure exactly what the criteria for a Code Red is. Maybe it's for tornado warnings and not thunderstorm warnings? |

Enjoy...... |

Just got my call for severe t-storm warning. Where is my cellar?
Flash-:boom: |
The only thing I've received recently was a cell call this evening from the weather warning dealie-do - 8:10 p.m. I go to the weather radar..........to find out the storm was pretty much already through the area.
Bill :) |
Quite a thunder, lightning, and hail storm here on the South end tonight. In the past 5 minutes saw two firetrucks heading south on Morse down below Mallory gate at O'Dell. Anything happening down there in the southern end of TV???? Some wicked cloud to ground lightning strikes were visible to the South.
Oops, make that 3 fire trucks...another went by and now hear one more. Yikes. Stay safe.... |
Update.... 2 of the firetrucks just headed back North on Morse followed by 3 of the chief/staff vehicles all with sirens blaring. Handling multiple incidents????
|
I did get a phone call but only when the storm was already raging. I"m in Hemingway Village in Sumter Co.

lightning
Last night at about 8 PM our house in El Cortez was hit by lightning! Ouch....it went right thru electric panel, now have hole in attic over garage roof, waiting for electrician so we can turn power back on. Fast response by Lake County fire dept. 8 trucks, lots of personnel. No flames, lots of smoke.
Happened just as we were about to turn on TV to watch the Bruins crush the Canucks ! Saw the last period in hotel room. Ah, but it's another beautiful day in The Villages ! Listen to the warnings. |

Do not hesitate to share the experience, I for one am curious as these storms always make me a bit nervous without the sanctuary of my basement back in MA. |

That lightning strike must have been what I saw from our kitchen window. I had just gotten back from walking the dog, saw the flash, heard the sound a millisecond later and jumped out of my chair - as did the cat who freaked out. |
[QUOTE=krys;362921]Mudder - Glad no one was hurt !! Hope the damage is minimal and is repaired quickly.
Me too. |
Just kidding around.....

If my dog Caly has to go out in a storm like that, I open the door a crack, I tell her I am not coming along, so to be quick and stay low :) |
The Code Red phone warning appears to be broadcast only when there appears to be imminent danger in our IMMEDIATE vicinity . . . . like it's the last thing you'll hear before you get struck by lightning.
|
Mudder. I am glad you are O.K.! Very GLAD!
Kudos for your lovely positive attitude. You are wonderful folks. |

Lightning Protection
About three hours before the Boston Bruins raised the Stanley Cup on June 15th two Village residents reported direct strikes to their homes. In these cases there was no damage as each home was protected by a lightning protection system (LPS) commonly called lightning rods. This is the sixth and seventh cases of homeowners reporting similar such experience. LPS do work if their are designed, installed, and maintained according to the national standard and installed by contractors who are "listed" by Underwriters Laboratories and/or the Lightning Protection Institute. For more information see Univ of Florida professor Martin Uman's book the "Art & Science of Lightning Protection" in the local library and the back issues of the Lightning Matters columns that can befound at the POA website.
|
The house I bought (re-sale) in Glenbrook already had the LPS (lightning rods) installed on it. The former owner was an electrical engineer who respected the power of electricity. Neighbors on both sides also have the same 3 rod LPS as mine.
With this area being such a prime "target" for lightning strikes, I am really glad to have the LPS. I also have the surge protection from SECO (whole house) as well as surge protectors on televisions and computer. I would recommend the properly installed LPS for everyone. |
For anyone with a low threshold of risk a lightning protection system gives you peace of mind. They have no working parts but they should be inspected by a Underwriters Laboratories or Lightning Protection Institute "lised" installer every three to five years. If you have made any alterations to your roof or added on you should call to have your system checked ASAP
