Swimming lessons
I signed up for a three week course (Mon & Wed. @ Sea Breeze.) in swimming. I have never been able to do anything in the water except sink. Although I still have trouble swimming long distances I am improving. I learned to float in the first lesson. I feel confident I will conquer and be able to swim the length of the pool. I may never be a Mark Spitz but one step at a time. If you can't swim, I find the course worth the $63 tuition.
Are there any TOTV people who attend the 2 o'clock lesson that Diane Castle is giving? |
I don't go near water unless it has bath bubbles or Scotch.

Congrats for going the route you did - good, safe way to learn the basics!

Congratulations Tom, I know what a feeling of excitement you must be having; I too didn't learn how to swim until I was an adult. I believed - in fact, I was sure - that I could never learn; had always been able to 'float' but that was all. It mystified me that others could swim but that for some reason my body just couldn't swim. But I had kids and we wanted to have a pool, and I knew that that was insane unless I could, myself, swim (even though my kids could all swim). After I learned to swim (and I'm just an ok swimmer), in later years I took on other mental/emotional challenges and learned that I could survive, even enjoy, roller-coaster and motorcycle rides, bungy-jumped, and learned to belay; other things that I'd never thought that in a million years I could bring myself to do. I hadn't been raised to be much of a physical risk-taker, but learned that fears could be overcome. It's a great lift when you 'change your mind' and overcome a mental block and accomplish something you want to but thought you couldn't; makes it easier to take on other needed or wanted changes. It's amazing how our beliefs control our actions (and lead to inaction). I'm happy for you, Tom!

Way to go, Tom! I love the water, scuba diver here and swimming is so important to enjoy the sport! I wonder if there are any scuba divers at TV?

Tom-
Do you know how I can get in touch with Diane Castle? I'm looking to get swimming lessons one on one for my grandson this summer. I'm thinking I could start with Diane. Thanks, Tom pg |
Dianne is a fantastic teacher. I could not swim a stroke a few years ago, but am now quite an avid swimmer, thanks to Dianne. She teaches thru the Villages Learning college, or you can also hire her for private lessons. Her number is: 430-8951. She is great with beginners and children.

Good for you Tom.
My wife can't swim either and is pretty afraid of the water. We did a change order on our pool to 5' because she is 5'2'' and she feels she could get air if she stands on her toes. She has never even walked into the deep end! |
I took her course and it didn't do any thing for me. Maybe I'm not aquatic enough. What I found is I couldn't learn anything in water that's not over my head. I have no fear of the water. I wanted to learn to tread water but wasn't able in such shallow water. It's always easy when you know you can stand up when the going gets tough..
it's just my opinion. |
