Thanks, Taj - my husband and I are planning on going for the first time. If I knew who you were, I'd love to meet you as I have been an admirer of your posts - always insightful and well-written.

count me in

If my house sells up north, I will be down with 3 Democrats to join.:BigApplause:

cappyjon431 08-07-2011 07:22 PM

Two more coming in a few weeks when we move down. Maybe one day we'll have enough for a softball team!:D

BookBarb 08-07-2011 07:51 PM

We're in

Two more Marylanders/Ohioans coming in October!!!!

Taj44 08-07-2011 08:16 PM

Awesome! We welcome all. I haven't been lately, as I have committments on Saturdays, but the last time I went I think there were around 70 - 100 attending. There are usually some breakfast items - juices, coffee, pastries, etc., and a speaker or film of interest. A great opportunity to meet other Dems, discuss issues, and enjoy the fellowship of friends and neighbors who share our values.

I think we might have enough for multiple softball teams - from their website:

The Villages (Sumter County) Voting Statistics January 2010:
Registered Voters: 36,651
Democrats: 10,226
Republicans: 19,354
Other: 7,071

Certainly an area of conservatism, but still a large number of Democrats, with more arriving daily.

Wow, when we first told our more "liberal" friends we were moving to TV they made it sound like we might be the only Dems in all of TVland. To be totally honest, it was my biggest concern about moving into such a conservative community. They made it sound like we might be ostacized (or worse!) for our beliefs. I am respectful of all political opinions, but I certainly was concerned about being considered an "outsider" for mine.

I think as long as I stay out of the political forum, we'll do just fine in our new community. Looking forward to meeting everyone (of all political beliefs) when we arrive!

I believe someone posted the demographics for the villages and it was about half and half republicans and democrats!

And if I can say this without getting stoned... after the last debacle... I think that may be swaying more toward the democrats! :throwtomatoes:

Thee (thy?) will be stoned.....

Pturner 08-07-2011 09:16 PM

Dylan and I can't sing

"But I would not feel so all alone. Everybody must get stoned."

Oh... so glad you got the humor.... My friends make fun of me going to TV... I'm such a bleeding hearts liberal. But you know what??? I just want to get down there and have some fun! Life is serious enough....

I started this... and I am truly sorry. I was trying to make a joke. Please accept my apology. I really didn't mean to make this a debate.

Thanks

In the 2008 Sumter County presidential election where The Villages makes up a major portion of the electorate, it is interesting to note the result was overwhelmingly (63.01%) for McCain. Obama received only 36.04% of the vote. 82% of eligible voters went to the polls.

30,866 Sumter residents voted for McCain
17,655 voted for Obama

I'm not sure the voting demographic has changed much since the 2008 election. As indicated, there are more then a handful of Democrats in the Villages....just not a majority.

I am a proud Republican and somewhat conservative, but I do have to say that a TOTV open forum is not the place for making such negative comments as you have. I know that there are democrats on TOTV that I wouldn't like to have for friends, but there are others that I have the utmost respect for. i.e. Red Witch and Angiefox10. (if I read her right) I'd be honored if I could call either of them friends! I'm sure that there are others, but just don't know enough yet to say!

i take it you must use the term somewhat a little loosely. I doubt that you are that proud as you state. Besides one can still be friends and be on the opposite end of the political spectrum. It happens all the time. I hope one does not always have to make proper and politically correct comments. That is what is wrong with our political system toay. Politicians are too afraid to express their true feelings for fear what the media will do. I say the hell with the media and say whqat we mean and mean what we say. I think this site gets a little dull without some strong opinions and a little bit of humor and that is what i intend to bring to the site as well as being as helpful as i can on general information topics other than politics. As long as the language is clean and not vulgar the site will be that much better for it!

Taj44 08-08-2011 06:01 AM

This post was meant for information only as to the fact that yes, there is a Democratic club, and giving the next meeting date. If you wish to debate the pro's and con's of the various parties, please take it to Political. Thank you.

Between this and your other posts, it's interesting that you failed to include the word respectful in that last statement!

And some posters flame people that voice a suspicion about new posters like this. Unbelievable!

cabo35 08-08-2011 07:33 AM

Taj44.......Let me see if I have this right. You post a thread about the Democratic Party in the General Forum. Someone with another point of view brings a little heat and you want that poster to "take it to political"?

At the outset, your post may have been better placed in Political instead of General. In any case, I can't imagine it will be very long before the posts and/or thread goes :boom:

Thanks for the reminder. We can only hope certain parties read and more importantly, understand.

TOTV Team 08-08-2011 08:34 AM

This thread has gotten off topic. It was an announcement made, perhaps should have been in the Clubs section or Political. Regardless, please direct comments to the topic and not each other. If you would like to add further commentary please start a new topic in the appropriate sections. Thank you in advance for your considerations.

jojo 08-08-2011 08:53 AM

If it were in political I would not have read it. I am interested in the discussion on the issues - doesn't matter whether it is the Republican or Democratic club. Agree that the other comments belong in political.

I posted a thread about a Democratic Club meeting. I did not post any kind of point of view here, simply a meeting notice. The reason I did it is because a lot of new people are moving to The Villages, and some of those people are Democrats, and may want to attend the meetings. They have heard that there are only Republicans here, and it is nice to let them know there is another option; I do see others who are trying to "get something going" because they see the word Democrat. My feeling is, if a person wants to debate issues, that is what the Political forum is for. I have no desire to debate political issues with anyone, so I don't belong to Politcal.

In retrospect, I probably should have posted this under "Clubs" since it is a notice about a club meeting. I will ask the administrator to move this thread to "Clubs".

Taj44: I appreciated you posting the announcement in this forum. As a soon to be resident and a relative newbie to TOTV, I probably would not have even seen it in the "clubs" forum because I infrequently read those threads.

As for those folks intending to make this thread a political discussion, I would suggest for folks to not take the bait and avoid the political commentary. For those wishing to have political discussions, this is obviously not the right venue, but the proper venue does exist--just not here.

My vote goes to Political.....because that is what it is.

Don't forget about that famous "respect" word over there in Political...and here in TOTV. :)

You're welcome! I guess that was in the back of my mind. I rarely look at the "clubs" forum either. But there was no intention of getting political debate going. Again, just putting a meeting notice out there.

waynet 08-08-2011 01:02 PM

I agree with cappy...I would not have seen it either.....did not even know there was a thread for meetings.

TOTV Team 08-08-2011 04:54 PM

Moved to clubs per Author's request.

Mickedamouse24 08-08-2011 06:20 PM

Now we know why the parties can't seem to get along! What a crock!!!chilout

tpop1 08-08-2011 08:49 PM

Okay, to summarize......

1) It is posted in the "Clubs of The Villages" Section, and rightfully so! Its a Villages Club notice.

2) It was funny for awhile...see Bob Dylan refrences!

3) It became political with one unforunate comment blaming Republicans for the recent debt issues; deleted by the poster, but too late!

4) The "Political Forum" is by subscription only because many of us DO NOT WISH to be subjected to "Ear pollution."

......and I am not a Democrat...I'm the other kind!

What's the definition of a "Statesman?"

A "Statesman" is a dead Politician....and

GOD! Do we need more "Statesmen!!!!"

Democrats/Republicans

The last Presidential election had about 75% Republicans and the rest Democrats and independents.

2 of us coming from Baltimore/Bethesda,Potomac/Miami in January to Sanibel. Actually, we had two serious concerns -- one was being Democrats and the other was being Jewish. We were told that being Jewish isn't an issue, but being a Democrat. . ! Well, that's a twist for us!

We look forward to joining all if you and hope that neither of our concerns will be issues.

Two new Jewish Dems here. We have only lived in TV for a month, but people have been incredibly friendy and it has never been an issue.
