Report a post

Please note that in the upper right of every post you should see a red triangle with an ! inside of it. If you read a post that violates the Terms of Service of the site please click this button and report it to Admin.

The main thing that makes a board a friendly place to come to is to show respect for each other. You don't have to agree with all the members, you don't even have to like all the members here but please show some respect for their differences. Instead of flaming a post or posting something that will degrade the post report it to Admin or don't respond at all.

Effective immediately we are implementing "posting bans" of various lengths of time for conduct unbecoming a TOTV poster. Users who we post-ban will be able to log into the forum and read everything but they will not be able to post new messages or replies during the ban. At the end of the ban, their posting privilege will be returned. This is a private forum and posting is a privilege not a right.

I can't thank the 99% of users who currently follow the spirit of this currently and we thank you for all your support of TOTV. Please let us know if we can ever assist in any way.

Well done! It only takes one or two rougue posters to ruin the open and welcoming feeling you are trying to acheive on your board. Most people get attached to a message board because they feel that their opinions and observations are valued by others, and because they benefit from information and opinions of other members. If someone, or several, people begin denegrading their thoughts and opinions or attack ad hominem, they will soon tire of the battle and turn to other sources of entertainment. I was once a regular on a sports message board, but as it turned more and more combative and unpleasant, I retreated and seldom browse there anymore.

I have been searching for the Terms of Service agreement.

Pardon my ignorance but can you point me to this document so I can have a full understanding of its contents.

Respectfully,

Thank you. I found the forum rules. Would I be correct to assume the "forum rules" and "Terms of Service" are the same thing?

Thank you so much for this very wise direction. I hope that in the future that none of my posts cause others to feel sad or bad or angry.

I love this forum and so many of the people who post here have become so very real to me and than I meet them and they are like a gift.

If I EVER make ANY of you feel left out PLEASE IM me. I have felt left out and it is not anything I would wish on anyone.

It is good to be here with all of you again. I will try harder to do the right thing.

Hugs,
Gracie

You are the best Gracie and an important part of this forum. It is because of people like you and many, many others who make up the original cast on this forum and the current cast of members that Talk of the Villages has grown into what it is today. It is something very special and obviously something worth selling and buying.

I have no great problem with Admin enforcing your "Terms of Service", however I firmly believe that it must be published for all to see. So where is it? I'd gladly read it if only I could find it. Using the TOTV "Search" facility did not find such an agreement. Unless this "agreement" is totally unambiguous any post will become subject to criticism
by any disgruntled member whether his/her interpretation of the "rules" is valid or not. Each good taste/bad taste situation is potentially open to lots of interpretation and examination, characteristics that not everyone possesses.

Hi Mr. Mark,
You raise two excellent issues. When Members first register on TOTV, we check a box saying that we agree to the Forum Rules. Then, we don't see it again and we could forget. It's similar to when we register software, except the rules for TOTV are stated simply and conversationally, and they aren't pages and pages long. :) Below, is a copy and paste of the Forum Rules to which we agreed when we registered.
Forum Rules
Registration to this forum is free! We do insist that you abide by the rules and policies detailed below. If you agree to the terms, please check the 'I agree' checkbox and press the 'Register' button below. If you would like to cancel the registration, click here to return to the forums index.
Unfortunately every board has to have some sort of rules so here they are.

No commercial posts or advertisements by vendors, dealers, manufacturers or forums unless you are a TOTV sponsor. No commercial links in forum signatures or membership names. TOTV does offer banner advertising and sponsorship opportunities.

No porn on this site or links to any porn or risque photos (including avatars and sig pics) and please try and keep your language clean. We'll try not to split hairs on this one so use your own judgment.

This is a "Work Safe and Family Friendly Site" Anyone should be able to click on any message here and not have to worry about what's going to pop up on the screen if your kids or wife are in the room... or at work.

If you see a post that is violates these rules and guidelines please let me know by clicking the Report to moderator link and I will deal with it.

Trolls and Spammers
If a troll shows up on our boards and I can identify their IP I will disable all their accounts and will continue to do so until they go somewhere else to play. Trolls will be banned as fast as I can find them in-order to keep peace in the house.

The main thing that makes a board a friendly place to come to is to show respect for each other. You don't have to agree with all the members, heck you don't even have to like all the members here but please show some respect for their differences, and take it easy on the new guys and gals. You were a new member at one time too..

Thanks to everyone who has joined thus far. We're happy and privileged to have you all as members.

Thanks and enjoy TOTV.

It's true that "any disgruntled" user could report a post to administrators. However, it would still be up to the admins to interpret their own rules, decide whether one has been violated and respond accordingly. I am thankful that TOTV has user rules we had to agree to when we signed up; and that the rules will continue to be enforced.

Welcome back Gracie!!
Now we can stop fasting and get some sleep....:D

As to the Terms of Service, I'm sure the Administration is still getting their "sea legs" so to speak.

One of the things they might do is to post the Terms of Service above the main forum page, not exactly a sticky, but like a first section. Then folks can refer to it, etc.

It is also good to understand that the health of this forum is directly related to how diligent the regular posters are using the "report feature". No Moderator can read every thread, every post 24/7.....so they rely on good posters reporting any problem posts.

Consider this like a neighborhood watch....the report feature is like 911, keeping our "online community" safe, healthy, and lawful.

I wrote more on this in the "Where's Gracie?" thread, but it was a bit off topic, and so I do not think it got read very much.

Respectfully,

Frank

Dear Mr. Mark.

The reason for this thread was that the administrator was explaining that there would be a recourse for posters who wanted to report a blatant lack of respect.

This forum has many different aspects and many different sorts of information.

One of the most important types of information is factual. There are questions posed about issues such as the bond, that are totally new to people thinking about moving to the villages. Also things like number of pets, whether fences are allowed, whether buying an electric cart or a gas one is the best.

When we were thinking about buying property here, I had many such questions and this forum was an excellent source of factual information.

In reading the factual information, I discerned much about the personalities of the posters. Some were concise, some were on topic, some were witty, some were always negative. It allowed me to get a feel for the community I was thinking to join.

Although this forum certainly does NOT allow us to know all of the people in The Villages, it does allow us to catch a glimpse of the kind of interactions we might be having with others.

Please be patient with the "dribble". It really is only showing that people are human and in this thread, very kind.

I hope you find a place in The Villages, Mr. Mark. It is a very friendly place.

Kindest wishes,

Gracie

Trolling is against the rules for all of us, even those who advocate patience with rules violations.

Finally, your hope that "I find a place in TV" is appreciated, particularly since I've been a resident for 19 years. I wish you well as you too are about to become a Villager.

I suggest we look to Admin for some of his insight and direction on the 'troll' point.

n Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]

Most trolls will throw things in the middle of the thread to disrupt and change the subject. Most of the time they try to provoke anger, which people will then retaliate and flame the troller. Troller get a big kick out of people getting angry with them?
Talking about Gracie in this thread is not trolling, in my opinion, because Gracie makes us happy. : )
