Are you preparing for the hurricane?
Should I do anything special to prepare for the hurricane?
I charged my rechargable wine bottle opener, bought some candles & some water. Should I do anything else, or do you think it will miss us? |
This is a miss!
|
No sense wasting the charged wine opener! When's the party?

Not to put a damper on the humor (I appreciate it) but as a former Red Cross volunteer, having been to hurricane disaster sites, including Katrina, I strongly recommend you have a disaster kit ready at all times. Hurricanes are not the only concern, tornadoes, earthquakes, or terriorist activities can occur with zero warning.
I am not going to bore you what needs to be in supply kit: http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/...extfmt=default Now that being said, let's have a hurricane party! |
Hurricane parties are great, tornado parties are the pits. Salpal has it right. Have a great time with the hurricane party but be prepared for the worst, have your BOB ready to go with the stuff that you will need in case of an emergency. Always be like a good boy or girl scout, Be Prepared.

But, here in TV, I'm inclined to suggest: Don't Panic!
First of all, follow uujudy's lead and make sure your battery-powered wine opener is fully charged. And, of course, make sure that the cellar is appropriately stocked! Lay in extra crackers and some really good cheddar! You should be well taken care of! In the unlikely event that your opener loses power, be sure to call me. I have several hand-operated cork removers, available for nothing more than glass or two! :D SWR :beer3: |

Dont take your eye's off it yet!
As of 5pm 8/24 some of the forecast computer models are suggesting a track shift back to the West. Just how far remains to be (watched) seen.
Just be prepared. This one may not hit us but...the next one COULD! PylutDood (Hurricaine season goes until Nov 1) Dave |
Thanks, SALPAL for the informative Red Cross list....we won't be at TV until October but it's good to know what we should know!

here in our little corner of the jersey shore we are usually well prepared since hubs is a volunteer fireman and an ex-chief of the local fire dept. so details are in place. last things to do are to gas up the pick-up truck, pick up some ice cream [if the power goes put we will have to eat it!] and call the agent to increase the house insurance! ;)

I have to ask, what's Kitty Krack?

Oh ok, thanks for the explain. I wanted to make sure I had some in my hurricane kit. But I don't have a cat so I'm good, lol. Now, I do need to have the chicken jerky strips for Merlin, my dog so I do know how important it is.
|
Yep I'm going to begin preparing today....but not because I live in TV or anywhere in FL :D When I went to bed last night they were saying it was headed far enough east of the mid-Atlantic states that we would only experience strong breeze and a bit of rain. Today its a different story and they say we need to be prepared for the possibility of something major here in MD. So off to buy batteries and some water today....and people wonder why I want to live in FL?????

All seriousness aside
Having had a place in Panama City Beach, I never take any storm lightly. That's what happened in "Nawleans" with Katrina.
Having watched, for years, people boarding up, etc. preparing for a hurricane, we never gave it a thought until we had to deal with it. My first thoughts were, CRAP, we don't have a plan. We scurried for plywood to board up. Then deciding what of value we wanted to bring home in case of a complete destruction. It wasn't a pleasant experience. Of course TV is not in a direct path and here is the weather link we use at our golf course here. All the models seem to be way off shore, at this time. http://www.intellicast.com/Local/WxMap.aspx. So my advise would be to possibly plan for maybe power outage. We have a couple of big coolers for times when we have the power off for several days. That, by the way, can happen anywhere. Now, charge up those wine openers and plan for at least some rain (along with your Irene party)!! |
Always have a go bag
You should always have a go bag ready. Don't bother with clothing unless it is to keep you dry or for warmth.
Prescription drugs, cash, flashlights, water, etc. Keep your gas tank at least 1/2 full during the hurricane season. (other disasters tend to be localized ) Use the scare to look at what you would want to have in a medical emergency, fire or tornado. Get some LED flashlights if you don't have any. Many things are covered by insurance and are secondary to personal safety issues. |

We are about 25 miles inland of VA Beach. When Isabelle came through here 7 years ago, we lost power for 8 days, schools were closed for 2 weeks, fallen trees all over the area... so we are prepared for Irene. The local weatherman said we are in for some bad weather. I hope all of you east coasters are prepared and stay safe!
|
Well my daughters on the Outer Banks, now doesn't that make me feel warm and fuzzy. NOT!! She can't leave because she's a 911 operator. So I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.
|
I'll keep mine crossed too. I am sure she is in good hands!
|
Thank you! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too. It didn't bother me when we lived up there and were close to her, now it's a little different. LOL

Sandbridge is the only area of Va I've heard so far has called for a mandatory evacuation.
