I may have to join Russ Boston

and take a vacation from this board for awhile. Overall lately it is not enhancing my vision of Florida's Friendliest Hometown.

FYI: Lots and lots of posters don't live here. Do you? You really have to assess the "friendliest hometown" thing by the people you meet when you are out and about, whether it's the golf courses, the Town Squares, etc. This forum is not "The Villages", per se.

Saying that; everyone must look out for their own welfare in this world. If you're feeling depressed or stressed by this site, by all means take a break.

Well said quirky! I agree that divergence of opinion is good and healthy. The thing that I don't like is when people get disagreeable or personal. Like Gracie said when someone is happy they should not be attacked for looking through rose colored glasses, that is the way they see things and that is equally as legitimate as someone who sees things the opposite. Discussion sites like TOTV are always on the edge of turning some people off, as often posters will express their opinion in a way that is off-putting, when they probably would not do that in a polite, face-to-face discussion. There is plenty of room for misinterpretation and misunderstanding in posts that are often typed quickly and without a lot of forethought, and which sometimes misportray the true thoughts of the poster. I have been guilty of posting things that I later looked at and realized they did not truly convey my intent. Hopefully, this is not one of them:confused:

I am so sorry dear Weissenbach. I didn't remember correctly. PLEASE don't take a vacation.

Everyone can see through posts on here and no matter what the words say, people can see meaness or kindness. YOU my friend are always kind.

We have made some terrific friends here, and only one I can think of that I met thru TOTV. I personally don't think people who post here are necessarily representative of residents of The Villages, which might be a good thing, after viewing the bashing going on lately. As mentioned, many posters are not even residents, or are only here once in awhile. I guess what I'm saying is, don't let this board dis-illusion you about The villages.

redwitch 10-25-2011 04:13 PM

Ed, leave if you need a break. But don't leave because a few are behaving badly. As I've always been taught, take what you need, give what you can and relax and enjoy the ride.

l2ridehd 10-25-2011 04:30 PM

I think it's the written word vs the in person discussion. Somehow a lot is lost with the written word. Someone may say something totally as a joke or poking fun. When you read it, it sounds like they are on the attack. If they said exactly the same thing with a smile and a laugh, you would interpret it entirely different. The same book read by 10 different people will have 10 entirely different views of the hero or villain.

I have taken to reading my replies through completely before hitting the submit button. And even then sometimes the meaning becomes skewed.

So yes there are a few bad apples who immediately jump on someone when they disagree with them and there are those who can't type an answer to someones question without making a joke of it, but all in all it's a really nice bunch of people. So I try to give just a little slack to some now and then. But even that doesn't always work.

CarGuys 10-25-2011 10:33 PM

Good Point!

IMHO-Good point, I hate e-mails. If everyone thinks about how many great conversations you have struck up with a total stranger in the Square, or at the pool you will feel better!

Face to face sure is better. Except for the face to face getting hit with a pipe disaster a few weeks ago in LSL!

Tom Hannon 10-26-2011 03:24 AM

Boston-itis seems to be contagiuos. There are a lot of Village people who have remained silent in the past few months. I'm sure all of us conflict with a handful of posters. What I do is try to ignore them. Don't let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch. This site is a great way to meet new friends. I have met more than a dozen people I would never have met if it weren't for TOTV. Every one of them was as nice or nicer than expected...even Bill of the famous comedy team of Bill & Brillo. Like other posters suggested.... give it a rest. I went through that stage a while ago but came back again. Although not as active as I once was, I find this site a great tool for infomation and a way to keep up with TV when I am back in NY.

.

This is something I need to do. Many times a mispelled word or a missing comma can alter the meaning of what you were trying to say. For example.

"Let's go out and eat, Mary." In this sentence I am asking Mary to join me for dinner.

"Let's go out and eat Mary." (without the comma) This sentence is more graphic and its intent could be taken differently, in that Mary was dinner or in some peoples minds 'dessert'.

And yes, talking in person is better, but sometimes you meet someone at random and you lose contact with them afterwards. With email you have his contact info and could always reach them if so desired.

Ignore the negativity. This place is amazing. And yes I really do live here!

I Love you Man! We all need to lighten up alittle. I met you on line Tom and four of the most helpful couples in our new neighborhood. You and others helped me with home decisions, how to figure out TOTV and the lifestyle in TV.

Now figure out that statement " I Love you man!" :024::jester:

Yes, Herv. We exchanged a few PM's about my high water bill. We promised to get toghther next year when we are both in TV. You will be another TOTV member that I will soon meet.

graciegirl 10-26-2011 07:11 AM

There is being realistic and stating problems and there is negativity and just plain lying about things. There are posters on here that if one person says it is black they are not only going to say it is white but they are going to say it in such a way as to anger everyone.

When I see some names go up, even before I read a post, I can hear a Wagnerian dirge playing in the background and KNOW that there is going to be someone who enjoys it when the Morses do wrong things. They bring up the law suit against the developer that was won by a group of residents and love to talk about the IRS case and like to talk about the Morses and the poaching charges. NONE of these people reveal anything about who they are ever, so they hide behind their anononymity and never come to gatherings and meet other people.

There is a group of people who don't like some things here and don't like the developer and do not see this place as wonderful as I do and who do reveal who they are and I respect them VERY much and they have changed my mind about things too. For instance the debacle about the Relay for Life.

Now that doesn't mean that a lot of positive people don't remain anonymous and never come to gatherings. AND that doesn't mean that how things are run here is perfect and that bad things never happen here or should be hushed up. I think what gets my back up is the JOY these people seem to have when something does go wrong.

This is our hometown now. I think we should do anything we can to keep it safe and nice and pretty and interesting and a place where we can live and welcome our families and new residents. That DOESN'T mean that we should NOT bring things out that are bad, unreasonable, stupid, morally and ethically wrong, badly handled and far, far from perfect.

You can and should be patient with stupid, or lack of abiltiy to grasp a situation. But you shouldn't have to put up with MEANESS on this forum or anywhere. It isn't what you say but how you say it.

And You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear or put lipstick on a pig.

I still say I want to shake Gary Morses hand....and fill his ear about a lot of other things.

Gracie...still a cheerleader.

Ed, take a break if you feel you must. But do stay in touch with TOTV! It's an "ebb and flow" thing - things are always changing! I've always appreciated your posts and your thoughts. They'll be missed.

Exactly what some people complained about. My comment about you was in jest...although some people would flip out and get offended. This is why we need to word out comments carefully. Not knowing of people's reaction.

OK, I hesitate to add to this post but here goes. Over the years this site has gone from very informative to (at times) very argumentative. I try to log on and check the state of the the golf courses, restaurants, and new day trip venues. The group usually gives very subjective info on these topics, but you do have to remember that personal taste enters into descriptions. I feel that the site has become like a "twitter" site in that certain people have an opinion on everything that is posted. At times these useless responses can irk a person and can be misconstrued. I only spend 2 to 3 months a year in TV and love every minute that I am there. I guess if you don't log in as much or don't make it your main social activity the posts won't bother you as much. Just my humble opinion - I love TV.

A lot of things here are the result of a community with an older population. Bad driving is typical but actions that would apprear to be agressive driving are mostly confused driving. I was conflicted about whether to be angry or to pity the couple driving the wrong way around the SL square the other day. People who decide to try golf and hope to introduce their wives to the game always choose level 4 exec courses or get the 9:30 tee time on the champ courses. The snowbirds arrive and just stand around in the sports pools and invite their grandkids into the adult pools and don't have a clue to the difference. Otherwise, this is paradise and you can almost duplicate it for an additional $100K per year in another retirement community.

OMG, you hit the nail on the head!!!! I personally think it is a combination of confused, and that there is also a certain percentage of people out there who really don't care, and think the rules don't apply to them. I've seen them post on TOTV about slow play on the golf course, for example, and their answer is that they're retired, and what's the hurry, and everyone else should slow down. Thankfully people like that are a very small percentage. I think you'll run into things that are less than perfect no matter where you live. I enjoy my time in The Villages in spite of these imperfections, but I do wish some people would try a little harder to learn the basics.

Am I the only one to find humor in the recent posts? This one seems to be singling (hope that's a word...is it Gracie?) out us old folks and another thread is going after the younger crowd.

To quote Gracie, "Boy Howdy!"

TOTV Team 10-27-2011 07:58 PM

It is our desire to keep this site positive and a reflection of the good people who live at The Villages. It would be unrealistic on our part to expect all users to share the same points of view on topics and sometimes certain users can 'rub' each other the wrong way. If you find that to be the case you can go into your User CP and put a user on an ignore list and you will not see their comments. If you feel that a post is of concern you can click the triangle in the upper right corner of the post and it will be reported to the Admin and Moderators for a collective review and appropriate action, often private including account infractions and in extreme situations account probation and bans.

We thank everyone for their participation and support on Talk of the Villages!
