Winter Storm Watch

There is a winter storm watch here in virginia for tonight. Now do any of you folks living in tv miss that sort of thing? Be honest, maybe just a little?

Pat_RI 10-28-2011 06:56 AM

Dusting of snow last night in RI...black ice today....2-5 inches Saturday.

ceejay 10-28-2011 06:58 AM

Honestly...yes, I do! (I can't believe I just said that!):sigh:

Coming from Buffalo, we experienced many winter storm watches and warnings.

We would run out to the stores, stock up on snacks and comfort foods and hunker down to await the storm. We would light the fire in the hearth, put on our pj's and a good movie...and just wait!:icon_bored:

Here in the Villages, the minute it starts to rain, we are out on our lanai, ready and waiting.

There is something to be said for living in the "lightning capitol of the world". We've seen some awesome storms here.

If I can't have my snow (and believe me, I really don't want it) I can have my storms. I am content.:wine:

I really hate black ice. Not festive at all.

I bet the couple of stores we have here will be sold out of bread and milk. They go nuts.

LvmyPug2 10-28-2011 07:21 AM

Nope. After spending 56 yrs " up north", I don't miss it at all. I like watching the national news when they show a video of big snowstorms. I just can't stop giggling every time I see one of those clips. :a20:

Isn't that the truth! My son has always said that here in Atlanta winter storm warnings are a conspiracy by the grocery stores to get rid of bread and milk that are approaching their expiration date!

Stay warm Posh.

37 degrees @ 7am today - brrr! forcasting snain [snow/rain] for the better part of tomorrow here on the coast of nj! this is waaaaayyyyyy to early for this kind of weather!

it's no wonder so many snowbirds flock back to the villages at this time of year!

mfp509 10-28-2011 07:41 AM

I have been here for 8 yrs and I still miss waiting and watching the storm - but not being in it when it's over. I actually still go to the Hartford, CT channel 3 website for the weather and no school announcements when there is a storm. I also go to the Dept of Transportation webcams and watch it snow. Just a way of getting my "snow fix" I guess. I wouldn't trade being here for anything.

jblum315 10-28-2011 08:06 AM

Used to love the snow coming down, but not the shoveling and driving afterwards.

2BNTV 10-28-2011 08:18 AM

Low 30's here in the morning, CT in Fairfield County. :cold:

Suppose to get some white stuff tomorrow.

Oh Joy!!!!! :yuck:

I don't and will get more of it tomorrow. :) Thanks for the picture.

I looked up the weather forecast for tomorrow and where I live is a prediction of 3 to 5 inches.

Oh, to be in TV.

nitehawk 10-28-2011 09:35 AM

Yes, I do miss the snow, and the fall, and the changing of leaves.
Nothing better then coming in from skiing to a nice warm house with the wood stove cooking.

Hi Posh 08,
We had our fill of the same weather for decades in Louisville (and Doug in Ohio, before moving to Louisville), and when we came to TV in 2007 we joyfully fled from the cold, gray skies (that was always the worst part, for me), ice, and snow! I thought we'd eventually miss it, and the storm watch drama, fireplace going as we watch the snow fall, etc; but so far we haven't!

Friends cannot even convince us to take a cruise with them through Alaska, even though the photos look beautiful. (Maybe someday we will want to see snow and ice again in person; we never say 'never'; but not so far).

We thrive on the sunny skies (love the days that sunglasses are a must!), and the warm weather here.

It is overcast and a little rainy/misty right now in TV, but we still have comfortable temperatures, so we'll still go to the square and walk later; this is as much weather 'hardship' as I ever want to have again!

Very well said, Freeda.

It was just what I was thinking this morning. I would tend to think that after being in TV a while, one might like to remenisce about the times when one was enjoying the cold but as we all know that after living many years with it, it becomes a drag.

I love the summer so one can go out and be about. The changing of seasons is nice but the winter stinks. - IMHO

:agree:

Snow coming down can be beautiful, but I won't miss the aftereffects of it. I also won't miss it when it starts to get all dirty looking along the sides of the roads.....

This is the first fall in many years that we have had good color and I actually have enjoyed it, but not the next phase.

Snow Memories

Okay, this thread has made me a bit nostalgic. As I've mentioned before I grew up in Cincinnati and have some fond and not so fond snow memories!

Good

1) Sled riding. My dad made us a wooden sled that had runners that were about 1 1/2" wide. It out ran all of the store bought ones with the narrow steel blades which eventually dug into the ground and stopped the sled dead.

2) Mittens and gloves. Most kids had a stay-at-home mom in the old days. When our mittens got soggy mom would meet us at the door and exchange them for a dry pair. Wet ones went on the on floor "register" to be dried. When you were finally called in, you could stand on said registers to warm your tooties!

3) Snowmen and forts. We lived across the street from a small expanse of land (seemed huge in those days) which probably equaled two to three building lots. Sloped down so it was great for sledding. Bottom was flat and the neighborhood boys "teamed up" and built elaborate forts from which great snowball fights were waged! Mom actually contributed one of dad's old hats to grace your snowman's head. Remember when all dads wore brimmed hats?

4) When I was 8 yrs old we upsized as we had a new baby brother on the way. My older brother who would have been 11 at the time would get up very early and shovel neighbor's walks for oh, I not sure, but probably $.50 - $.75 cents. (Dad wasn't paying so he was up early doing our own). Liabilty issues and all that. LOL).

5) Remember when each classroom had a cloak room? You deposited all of your outer wear including the dreaded "leggings" which I hated. Picture Natalie Wood in "A Miracle on 34th Street". I have a picture of me on Santa's lap wearing the very same coat, hat, muffler. etc. I also spent some time in that cloak room for excessive talking. Picture that, huh? (We also had a kid who would eat other children's lunches while he was "incarcerated" in that room).

6) I later went to college at the Univ. Of Cincinnati. On snow days, all of the plastic trays would disappear from the cafeteria to serve as sleds. Yeah, it was theft but we'll pretend for the purpose of this thread that all were returned.

Not so good:

Frozen locks. I had a hand-me-down '61 Belair which had external door locks and I had to get up early to dump boiling water on the driver's side handle to get it to "unfreeze".

I went to Cincinnati Public Schools. After (what seemed like a hours of school closings) the notice always ended with, " And Cincinnati Public Schools will remain open".

Okay, I rambled enough. Didn't we have great childhoods?

Posh 08 10-28-2011 11:28 AM

Wow, I was hoping to send yall down memory lane but that was terrific and I was there with you.

I would not be disappointed if I never saw snow or felt the cold that comes with it.
I get enough satisfaction by looking at the snow on my Christmas cards.

I also enjoy hearing from friends and family right around February....by then most want to not see it again either.

If there are no palm trees in the yard I know I have strayed too far North.

btk

Posh 08 10-28-2011 01:53 PM

Glad to hear you about the palm trees. Just have just upgraded us to a Winter Storm Warning. We still have so much foliage on the trees that there may be lot's of power outages. No problem with your palms.

njbchbum 10-28-2011 03:52 PM

one of the things i enjoy the most when driving down to the villages is the point where i no longer see the sign "warning bridge freezes before roadway"!

Posh 08 10-28-2011 03:59 PM

* Accumulations… 4 To 8 Inches Of Snow.
* Timing… A Mix Of Rain And Snow Will Overspread The Potomac Highland And Northern Shenandoah Valley This Evening… And Change Over To Snow Tonight. The Heaviest Snow Will Fall From The Predawn Hours Saturday Into Saturday Afternoon. The Accumulating Snow Will End By Mid Afternoon.
* Impacts… Heavy Wet Snow Will Likely Accumulate On Trees. With Foliage Still On Trees… The Snow May Lead To Broken Tree Limbs And Power Outages. Hazardous Travel On Snow-Covered Roads Is Also Possible.
* Temperatures… In The Mid 30s. :loco:

From the NWS

It is 45 degrees today in Ontario, and it will be 50 in a few days. We're still having some lovely fall colour. No snow for a while!

Soon it will be time to start packing the truck for the trek back to The Bubble. When we start seeing palm trees, we are like kids anticipating Christmas! There is no finer feeling than when we first roll into the driveway of our TV home, and know we have six wonderful months ahead!

It is a beautiful day here in Alaska too! We don't have any snow on the ground, it has been a beautiful fall. Of course once the snow is here it is here until May! :cold: The forecast is for snow on Monday but we are hoping for a few more wonderful snow free days.

We will be at our home in TV in 45 days, not that I'm counting.

Yes, believe it or not, I miss the snow!

BUT, and you must understand this: I miss the snow, and only the snow!

So, when conditions begin to deteriorate, I am likely to return to a "this is how it should be" attitude, and breath a sigh of relief!

I enjoy hearing that it may snow or that it may be extremely cold - especially when I am far away from such threats!

I will miss the "first snow of the season", the crisp fall air but as for the 2nd snow and all FORGETABOUTIT

2 to 4 in Philly in October? Sheesh

Posh 08 10-29-2011 06:46 AM

The grassy areas are covered this morning and the snow and wind have picked up. The good news is Miss Sam made in from NOVA without problems this morning. The other good news is we are both off this weekend so we don't have to worry about it.

graciegirl 10-29-2011 07:00 AM

I like it to snow on Christmas. Amen.
