beware of garage sale thieves
 

Our neighborhood just had a large garage sale. I had some silver necklaces securely taped to a large board. Someone stole 2 of them even though we had several people helping and watching. Last year someone stole a new cordless phone. I don't know if this is common practice for some garage sale shoppers to take what they can. Just be careful, and I do hope it was not a TVer.

Times are tough for a lot of folks right now so maybe someone was desperate for a way to generate some quick cash. Perhaps a hungry child has food tonight. If not, and if this was just thievery at its worst, shame on them. I hope the silver tarnishes and turns their fingers black!

It's stealing no matter the reason. If we start justifying it for some reason we are sunk as civilized people.

I had same thing happen back in Ark so it happens everywhere. We had three of us out there and the stuff was in packaging so not easy to walk out with but they did.

That is SO wrong! No matter the circumstances.
 

I don't know what I would do if I saw someone stealing something.

If they would steal...they might carry a weapon.

I guess get their license number and call the police after the fact.

What would you do?

The biggest mistake someone having a garage sale makes is, advertising a sale for 8:00 and let 20-30 people stand in their driveway until exactly 8 and then opening the door, thats when stuff gets stolen.
Instead, if you are ready and its 7:30 let them in, usually they show up in small numbers.
What difference does it really make......you want to get rid of the stuff, right?
I once went to a street that had several sales, a guy was standing in front of his open garage door and it was about twenty minutes before the advertised time. He told me he could not let anyone in because it was a rule in TV not to let people in before the advertised time.

I was at a mall back in Virginia and there was a group of vendors set up in the hallway selling sports cards. Baseball cards, football cards, Nascar...you know what I mean. I was browsing with my stepson and a teenager was walking around with us when it dawned on me that he was using us as a shield so he could steal cards. He was dropping them down in a shopping bag.

I walked over to the man managing the booth and pointed the boy out to him and told him what I'd seen. He called for security and the boy was arrested.

Another time, many years ago, I was leaving work in a city at about 1 a.m. As I started to put the key into my car door, I heard a crash and looked up to see two men taking items through the broken plate glass window they'd just broken.

I squatted beside my car trying to disappear. When they walked up the road, I got into my car and drove straight to the police station and reported what I had witnessed. I was subpoenaed to go to court as a witness. The men pleaded guilty when they found out there was an eyewitness to their crime.

If I saw someone stealing from a yardsale, I'd tell the homeowner or whoever was in charge and help them the best I could. Right is right. I'd want someone to do the same for me. When I see someone doing something wrong, my adrenaline gets pumped up.

Have to agree it happens everywhere...had it happen "up north". It's a sad deal that some have to do that. I've also heard of thieves distracting the garage-sale owner-people and stealing their cashbox. NOT here!! It's always best to keep vigilant!!

I agree Bogie. If you are trying to get rid of it...than let them in.

When I come up with things I no longer need, I donate to charity; hence, no problems like this and I am rid of the excess material.

That's what I did with a whole house of furniture when we sold in Palm Beach county.

Totally agree. If I track all the hours I spend preparing for a garage sale, I "earn" just a few dollars/hour. Now, I donate my stuff and take the tax deduction.

Posh. Bogie is a rule follower. Sometimes these threads become so convoluted with our joking and nonsense..(I am very much to blame) that no sense can be made of them.

AND there is a squirt gun posse made up of otherwise sweet ladies who post on TOTV. We threaten frequently to beat the crap out of wrong doers.

Where I come from it is common for the local "professionals" to show up at the first day of garage sales a half hour early so they can wheedle their way into the sale before anyone else to take advantage of the whole virgin inventory. I've always found that to be unfair to others who respect the start time and show up then. On the one time I was involved in a Saturday morning garage sale, I took great pleasure in not letting anyone in early, no matter what excuses they had. Maybe a sign out front "Early admittance allowed with a 20% premium on prices" would be in order. Just saying . . .

Posh... Bogie is such a rule follower as well, thus why I was teasing him about it. I thought he was using the quote to "honor" Mr Rooney's life.

That being said... I've never seen you be mean spirited on this page and while I didn't understand your comment, I certainly didn't think you meant it in a mean way. :smiley:

The guy was stupid. Why would anyone think there was a rule about the time to open a garage sale. How in the world would a rule such as that be enforced?

You are right and I agree with your thinking...........however......... Recently when we were trying to get rid of things up in Ohio during our recent rather rushed move...I was at the point of paying people to take things.

Which brings forward the question...Is it junk or is it junque?
