Door to Door Meat Salesmen
 

Has anybody purchased meat/seafood from the back of a pick-up truck ? The truck has a freezer in the back. The driver said he has 1,000 customers in TV. Advise.

Remember that door-to-door sales people are against TV regulations.

Time was when we used to buy fresh veggies from a similar vendor. Time was at least 25 yars ago! :wave:

Probably the only time to buy something out of the back of a pick-up is in West Virginia. And then the purchase should come in a clear glass jug.:cool:

How can they regulate selling out of a truck if the truck is on a county road?

Thats the best place to buy moonshine. You read something into the statement that was not there.

It is ok to sell out of a truck but don't believe a thing the guy says. We had them come around in Tampa........maybe looking to get a glimpse inside your house.

I never bought moonshine, so I guess I leave it at that.

IMHO - Personally, I don't believe it when somone throws out an arbitrary number of customers. I would feel much safer in buying from the supermarket where there is a known controlled environment.

I would tend to think if he had so many customers, someone from this site would have already vouched for this person and said they were OK.

I have always had two rules when it came to home solicitations....I never buy anything at the front door or on the phone unless I originated the transaction! Call me distrustful but if I know I just don't do those things I don't have to guess whether it is legit or not.

.......Had a Lady stop by today about 5 ish....She had a Full-size van with HUGE decals with the name "DIRECT Something". ...IF we bought a "CASE of steaks" she would throw in a "CASE of seafood"......After getting permission from da boss...... I was allowed to let the nice saleslady in the house.
...OK...heres the deal...the CASE LOT of steaks along with the CASE of seafood would be only $ 755.00 Because she was GIVING us the seafood.

...intense price negotiations took place for the next ten minutes......

....AT THAT POINT ...her final offer became......"OK.... TWO of the $ 755. CASES of assorted steaks along with the "free" $ 500. CASE of seafood for only $ 375. total price"......Did we buy ....NOPE.

Considering that bad food can not only make you sick and it may also kill you, I would never purchase any food product from someone in a truck. The risk, IMHO, are far too great! The buyer has no idea where this food product came from, how old it is and how it was cut and refrigerated. I do appreciate that for some people that such an offer may present itself as a bargain, but, please, buyer beware.

Many people, especially TV residents, think door-to-door solicitation is illegal in TV-land. Not True! Your deed restrictions, covenants, whatever, may say something about that but they only apply to residents, or more specifically to those on the deed. They are not "laws" that apply to the general public. How many door-to-door salespersons do you think own homes in TV? Call the sheriff to report door-to-door solicitors and they are too polite to laugh in your face but it is not against the law.

However, Florida does have a Door-to-Door Solicitation Law (Florida Statutes 501.022) which requires these people to have a license. They are supposed to show you the license when the knock on your door (probably seldom happens) and have to show you the license if you ask to see it! If they don't have it, or won't show it to you, this is something you can report to local law enforcement - Soliciting Without a License. Being realistic, the seriousness of your report ranks right up there with such items as reporting a car driving around the square that has an inoperable turn signal, and similar "crimes".

The same type of "vendor" came around my neighborhood a few weeks ago. No I didn't buy and neither did my neighbors but we discovered he told each of us a different story about why and how he was selling. Deceiving and untrustworthy in words so what about the beef!!!!!

I shared a room with a guy from WV while in the Navy overseas. He brought one of those bottles back after a Christmas trip to his home. You had to be careful what you spilled those drops on as it ate through most everyting it touched. True story!

I agree. The sickest I ever was in my life was years ago with food poisoning - after being home sick all day I managed to somehow drive to the doctor who took one look at me and said "can you call someone to come drive you to the hospital or would you like us to call an ambulance - you're too sick to drive!" A week in the hospital with iv fluids. I would never buy food this way or eat anything that I wasn't sure about.

My California-native husband and his family had never met anyone with a southern accent until they met me. My father-in-law immediately started calling me "Shine", short for moonshine. I used some connections to get my FIL a pint of "shine" for Christmas. He never opened it, but it became one of his prized possessions and we became best buds. (MIL was a different story - I was "spawn of the Devil" to her :rolleyes:)

And Freeda, I too had food poisoning and have never been sicker. I hallucinated that people coming into my room were trying to force-feed me hamburgers.

Excellent policy and one I've always followed. My conversations with solicitors are always very very short. They start their spiel and and get very few words out before I say "Sorry, I'm not interested".

I would bet it is either uninspected, stolen or both.

Not that I would purchase or try either one, but what is the difference in buying meat from a truck and seafood from a roadside vendor. There are several threads on here about people purchasing seafood from such sources yet nobody admits to buying meat from a truck. Looks to be two of the same to me.

Big difference between buying veggies and meat. How many times has that meat been defrosted and frozen again? Who's to say it is actually from a cow? Getting sick or worse isn't worth taking a chance to save a few dollars.

It has been a couple of years now but these guys sold in our neighborhood. Myself and several neighbors purchased the steaks and burgers. They were excellent. Don't pay their opening price though. Eventually the price was almost half of the original.
