Wifi

I have a MacBook and want to know if there is a way to set up WIFI to my home. Does The Village have WIFI I can get hooked up with? I just brought (Alhambra Way) will not be moving till Ohio Home gets sold.

If you want wifi in your home, you'll have to contract with Comcast or Century Link.

Welcome to TV and good luck with the sale of your home.

philnpat 12-18-2011 07:27 PM

Wifi is available in all the Regional recreation centers as well as many of the eateries in the squares.

CarGuys 12-18-2011 10:38 PM

Speed

What are the internet speeds available for TV Comcast or others?

Sorry I am a displaced Fios user. I have been warned that moving to TV is like moving back in time for computer internet speed?

I know we are suppose to slow down in retirement but I like SPEED! It's a CarGuys thing.

For around $45 3 MPS, $5 more gets you 10 meg with CenturyLink. $5/month to
use their WIFI router, or buy your own for under a $100.

You can log on to the Village's wifi at rec. centers. At Sea Breeze I got 22 meg!

With Comcast, I'm getting about 20Mbps download and 4Mbps upload. This is measured by using Speedtest.net. I own a Motorola cable modem that supports DOCSIS 3.0 which makes a huge difference. The monthly cost is $47.99/mo, I think. I was able to get the first 12 months for $24.99/mo.

internet modem

So Comcast doesn't provice the best modem available for their service?

I didn't say that. I don't know what modem Comcast provides.

66vetter 12-20-2011 06:54 PM

You will find varied opinions on this. It also depends on the neighborhood I believe after reading other similar posts. I am in Tamaarind Grove where the homes are fiber optic wired.
I use Century link with my own router. I have the 10 MBH download okay for me. With Skype video . You can get 25 if needed.

I had Comcast prior to this move and it was a love -hate relationship. I went Direct Tv and use cell phones.

Good luck. I think it is personal preference and mostly how you are treated by techs and customer service will be a deciding factor in satisfaction.

Modem

You can buy a wifi modem from Bestbuy for around $45 and hook it up yourself. It comes with simple to do instructions.

Bestbuy Model: E1000SKU: 9770315

Up to 300 Mbps data transfer rates; WPA/WPA2 (personal and enterprise) and SPI firewall protection; four 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports

I used my iPad w/3G last week during a lifestyle preview -- it wasn't as fast as my home WiFi network.

Wireless

I figured that might be the case.

Thanks-

I bought a WiFi router at BestBuy and the Geek Squad hooked it up for me, total cost about $100. I have Comcast for internet and there is no monthly charge for WiFi.
My grown children installed WiFi themselves and in fact they even take their router with them to their summer vacation house in Maine and install it there. I expect the time will come when the whole of TV will be a WiFi hotspot, as has already happened in some cities, but then there is a security problem (something like the old-fashioned telephone party line). I dunno. technology is moving way too fast for me.

CarGuys 12-25-2011 04:47 PM

Technology

I agree,

Watching Grand Babies twins try to read a magazine or paper while sitting on the floor.

Using their little fingers and attempting to pinch and expand the printed picture thinking it works like a IPad or Cell Phone-

I feel OLD!

Isn't the wi-fi for a Mac Apple's Airport gizmo?

ilovetv 12-25-2011 06:08 PM

Apple- Airport Express, for both Mac and PC....

66vetter 12-25-2011 06:46 PM

Carguy,

Bring your iPad down to my house and try what I have when you come down for closing.
I have the Centurylink and use it all wirelessly. Also just talked to a guy from Bridgeport, in the Syracuse area. He is buying two doors away.

lightworker888 12-25-2011 08:03 PM

We have an Apple Airport Express

and it is hooked up in the spare bedroom and gives us wifi throughout the house. Don't know the speed but it works fine for us. On occasion I have had to reset it but I think that has only happened a couple of times in 3 years. we are on Comcast and up til now have been pleased but I just heard that they are not granting vacation time for the rest of the year and I will have to see what is planned for the future, as one of the main reasons we have stuck with Comcast is because of the vacation option for the summer. If anyone knows anything more about it please post or pm. Don't know what options for cable we have in Poinciana.

Bridgeport

66Vetter!

If I can get it away from my wife. Can't believe it we both exchanged gifts this morning and she got me one, I got her one!

Ask your friend from Bridgeport is he has heard of the Herv and Dave The CarGuys on WFBL . I should have him call in one day. You also from Florida.

Give him my email-

Ipad is very powerful! wow.

HelenLCSW 12-25-2011 10:42 PM

Apple has a wireless modem that you can install yourself --it's great --costs about $100.

HelenLCSW 12-25-2011 10:43 PM

Oops--it might be a router --not sure --my bad --sorry

I am surprised if you were gong through WiFi and not 3G. Last year when we were in those units, they didn't have WiFi...Maybe they do now !

zcaveman 12-26-2011 08:23 PM

You can get a NetGear wireless modem at Wal-mart for $59 and install it in about 15-30 minutes. It works great.

CarGuys 12-26-2011 08:32 PM

Apple

Helen,

APPLE claims their router/ wireless / data backup does all and speeds up the wireless signal in the home. I think that one costs near $200.00

Any one out there using this system.
