Puronics water filter
 

We are new residents and were wondering if any one has had a Puronics water filtration system installed . Happy or not would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I would try your water first and see if there is a problem. I have lived here eight years and don't know anyone who has one.

I can't emphasize enough that you need to do your own research prior to purchasing any water filtration system.

Like you, we thought of purchasing a filtration system, but after information I gained from this TOTV forum and The Villages, we decided not to purchase one; and we have absolutely no regrets with our decision.

Again, do you research!

The new houses come with an extended warranty on plumbing and electrical, therefore I would not let anyone but the original contractor touch my systems. The company that installed my plumbing put in a softener for $900 and a filter under the sink for $500. To do it over again, I would have probably just done the softener for $900. You do not need either system, the water in The Villages is just fine. We prefer to shower in soft water as that is what we are used to, so the softener is purely a luxury item and not a necessity. Call your plumber for a quote.

Go to Home Depot and look at the water boss. I have one and love it. Cost around 500 dollars, also go on line to water boss and read all about it

Is the water different in different parts of The Villages?

I have been there several times. I've stayed at the Waterfront Inn and a Lifestyle stay and found the water to have a strong smell of chlorine and when we stayed in the CYV the water was VERY hard.

What water people were used to before the move..

Individual sensititve skin.

A independant water test say's it all. Test doen't guess.

I have like you experienced the Chlorine , and the water is hard enough to pound nails.

Not sure how 'independent' the test was but, I had my water tested in Pennecamp and it came out 14 on the hardness scale and 5ppm Chlorine (pretty high).

We're currently going through the agony of figuring out what is and isn't BS in the water softening/filtration industry.

We've talked with EcoWater (proposing the ERR 3500R20), but I got a distinct gut feel that the guy was shining us on a bit. I think $4000 is a bit much for a whole house water softener ($2900) and under kitchen sink Reverse osmosis system ($1000). The research I've done thus far has convinced me that there is no need for an RO system as long as you have the carbon filtration option on the water softener. The water testing results the water company is required to provide to EPA (and available on-line with some searching), shows that the Villages water is very clean, just too high in chlorine for our tastes.

In March we'll be talking with the Kinectco folks.

This is a really complex subject and it looks like there are a good number of 'snake oil' types out there.

I have a water softener and love it. Would not do without it. Not only does the water feel better in the showers, there is no chlorine taste or smell in the drinking water. It also cuts down on the amount of soap you need in your washing machine.

But then everyone has individual tastes and wants. So it is up to you.

As far as I am concerned, if you had a softener when you used to live you will want one here.

For folks who want "soft" water for the shower only: There's a filter you can buy at Home Depot for $20.00 that attaches to your shower head. I believe the brand is Sprite. They have the replacement filters as well. Works great. We can really tell the difference with this inexpensive filter.

Herv, it does have good appeal for a point-of-use application like the shower.

For the sake of clarity, I've never bought/used one - just thought posting the link would be useful for others who would be looking for additional info on it.

Yes, we have a Puronics Water system. So far, so good! It is NOT a water softener, it is a water purifier. My ice and water were AWEFUL before. Tasting like chlorinated water. Now, everything tastes fresh and clean. My vegetables are cleaned with good water. The water for my soups is wonderful. I used to have gadgets on my faucet in the kitchen and it became a strain on my hands to move the thing back and forth. It was a PITA. Laundry is cleaner and fresher. When I lived in MN, the water was great out of the tap. Believe me, there is a difference here in the water and anyone that says they are satisfied with what comes out of the tap probably can't tell the difference between a terrific wine and a cheap wine for $2.89. It takes a mature and developed palate! The Puronics system has been utilized by NASA. Did I make the best purchase? Who knows! But, so far, I'm a satisfied customer. :spoken:

Glad you are satisfied with your Puronics system, Tweety Bird. Personally, I have no problem with the tap water in The Villages. I do use a Brita pitcher for my morning coffee water and my refrigerator does have a filter for the water dispenser in the door.

I know from my work at Seniors vs Crime that water treatment systems are some of the biggest scams in The Villages. Some come into your home with a fake Welcome Basket and will "test" your water. They put some tap water in a test tube, add some black dye to it, the water turns black and they tell you it is bad water.

Anyhow, it is up to each person. Glad you like your Puronics. However, because NASA bought it is no good recommendation. They also bought toilet seats for $600, didn't they?
