Villagers wearing shorts on a cold day
It's about 46 degrees outside and I just saw a Villager(?) wearing shorts. Either he's a very hardy fellow, vacationing from up north, or he has Alzheimer's. My father had Alzheimer's and lost his ability to dress appropriately for both hot and cold weather. The other possibility is that he only packed clothes for warm weather because someone told him it's warm year-round in FL..
Do you ever wonder about people who wear summer clothing in winter weather? |

Villagers wearing shorts on a cold day
Having lived in TV for seven years, my observations regarding people wearing shorts on cold days (like today) - newly arrived renters, snowbirds, guests and a rare fulltimer determined they will not wear long pants again.
|
I saw more than one man in shorts today.
|
I saw every soul who had previously been north of the Mason Dixon line at Walmart and Publix just now.
They nearly mowed me down. How could I have been a snowbird this time last year? They aren't like Frogs at all! |
46 degrees is even cold for people in the northeast. :cold:
Possibly a hearty fellow but I know I always pack one pair of long pants when visiting in FL just in case. |
...

It's been in the 20's this afternoon here in NY and some kids got off the school bus in tee shirts and shorts !
BRRRRRRR !!!! Go figure |
I've waited all summer to get these cooler temps........I wear shorts year round and love it! :coolsmiley: Summer is the worse for me.....hot and humid for months.
|
I'm from up north & my shorts came out only when it was 50 or above! Down here it has to be 65 or above!
|
We know a fellow our age back in NY that wore his shorts even if it were 10 degrees out with a foot of snow on the ground and loved it. We all referred to him as "shorts" when we spoke about him!

Not as shocking as NYC where you see dozens of young women wearing micro-mini skirts and peep-toe shoes in the snow!

We have been Floridians for many years and my husband hates to wear long pants so he wore his shorts today. He says he comfortable. :super:

Talk about cold.....
56! Bring on the tank tops and shorts! Here in Upstate NY it's 16 with a wind chill of 1. We had a polar swim here on New Year's Day where 2000 people went for a dip in Lake George. I would guess the water temp was about 40-50. I can't wait until I move to TV and I can say that 56 is cold! Enjoy!

Must be a New Yawk, thang!!!! Sorry, back to the thread. Some people have a higher tolerance for the colder weather temperatures. I know it's not me. :) 19 degrees today, real feel 4 degrees in CT. |
uh oh, my hubbie has Alzeimers! He won't wear long pants unless we are going out to dinner someplace nice (not a sports bar) or if it's actually storming outside with cold temps. He WILL wear a sweatshirt or coat.

I saw a guy in a kilt and a sweater playing Yankee Clipper early this morning.
For me, wearing shorts is not determined by cold temps alone but by cold temps accompanied by wind. But the again, even in the Summer I generally won't wear shorts to dinner unless the restaurant is a really, really informal locale. |
Omg
It was a blizzard yesterday and waaaaay below 36 here in SW Ontario(-10C) Even had to put on the long underwear. Maybe your days are high enough for shorts for some hardy snowbirds from Canada but that ain't me! I won't go swimming until it is at least 80 out without a breeze. I'm hoping that March will be warm.

Shorts?! We saw people in swimsuits swimming one day this week and it was 42 degrees outside.
|
Feeling cold is relative. Shackelton and his men, wrecked and lost in the Antarctic, rejoiced in the balmy warmth of 39 degrees F.

Cool!

All through out the holiday season we could instantly recognize the newbies/visitors by their dress or lack of it. "I'm in Florida dammit and I WILL wear shorts and tees". Probably didn't pack other options.... "I WILL get a tan before going home"
How do I know this? Not so long ago I was one of 'em! Being full time changes your blood and the cold effects us more than ever. Before we would visit for a few days escaping brutal cold up north. 60 degrees here felt like heaven but to my mom (who was bundled up in heavy coats) it was nasty cold. NOW I know what she felt and why she always asked "aren't YOU cold?" |
We have had huricane force winds and mid 40's for the past few days here on the south coast of England, hubby still walks the dogs in shorts, and I am in capri pants. Only wear long when snow or frost is on the ground!

Just saying . . . |
A year ago this month, my father entered the hospital in Sarasota for what would be his final visit.
As he was being evaluated a nurse said, "only in Florida would a 96-year-old man come to the hospital in January wearing shorts." Sounds like she was still getting used to Florida. |
We have people here at UPS in indianapolis who wear shorts and only a jacket all winter long...never a hat and never a glove,,,I have asked why and the reply was {if you get used to the cold you won't need to cover up and you won't catch cold or the flu as often} take it for what it is worth...I personally cover up in layers and I drink hot coffee...When I am at TV on a cold evening I get an Irish coffee and it keeps me warm...

I usually don't dress too warm up here in RI unless I am ice fishing or it is snowing. When I go down to the Villages I usually bring a pair of pants but don't remember ever wearing them. If you stay active and moving I don't real think it gets too cold in the Villages. Two winters ago was a bit nippy but compared to New England it was a cake walk.

I wonder more about the people who wear hats, gloves and winter coats when the temperature is in the mid 50's. No hats or gloves until the temp is below freezing in my book. :spoken: |

It looks like a regular summers day ;) |
Shorts in cold weather
I been living in florida for many years and choose to weir shorts year round. If you remember years ago girls use to weir skirts all year regardless of the weather. I wonder about people who weir winter clothes when its in the upper70s and even in the 80's.

I used to think the same way until my wife started having thyroid problems, along with being diagnosed with a chronic illness. There are times when she sweats in the dead of winter, and freezes in the humidity of summer. Things are not always as they seem, and we were not all popped out of the same "cookie cutter." |

I also take medication for a thyroid problem and I am a diabetic (very well-controlled) but I seem to have the coldest feet, just about any time of year! During these last few cold nights I have sat at my laptop with my feet wrapped in a heating pad! I kinda used to feel like Dirigo when we first moved down here from Maine. 46 degrees wasn't all that bad. Heck, a hood and four layers of clothes, plus gloves and wind pants were all I needed for a round of golf in that weather! Now 46 degrees is awful! Hubby never put long pants on for several years after we moved. They now hang at the front of the closet and he puts them on more often this time of year. It's amazing how some of us change our tolerances the longer we are here! Call it thinning blood, call it just plain turning into a wimp, I'm not sure what happens. My feet are freezing!! |
Too many years ago for any one to know about, the FedEx guy who came to the small travel agency where I worked in St. Louis was never, ever, seen in anything other than shorts as well as a short-sleeve shirt! We always told him that he'd freeze to death (especially when we were bundled up against near-zero temps. He shrugged it off!
Perhaps there's some truth that those who are exposed "24/7" to the cold will come to ignore it! But, when I head out in my golf cart and the temperature is below 50F, I'm likely to be wearing a fleece jacket, hat and gloves! With the curtains down, too! SWR :beer3: |
