Driving in TV
1. My wife was walking through the tunnel crossing BV at St. Charles and noticied a bicycle, two golf carts, and a Jeep Charokee in the tunnel at the same time last Tuesday.
2. I like the new signs in the roundabouts but I'm still afraid of the car in the outside lane that tries to go 2-3 exits around laying on the horn at the drivers trying to exit in the second lane at the second and third exits. 3. At Morris and Odell Cir near Havanna, there seems to be something that triggers the daredevil in 75 year olds to try to "beat" the car coming around the inside lane. Maybe all the former drag racers travel this route. |

While this is a wonderful place and many of us are in a slow down and relax mode. Those seasoned vets living here give good advise It is mandatory that while walking running driving a cart or car. Riding a MC Scooter or Bike. You have to be or drive on the defensive. Or you will get hurt. Look and think ahead and never assume the other vehicle is in control. If you Ride a MC this comes natural. |
Don't like the round a bout designs
I've been vocal about the driving in TV, not that I've driven it much, but when I did it seem chaotic to say the least. I think it all comes down to poor design. Personally, I don't believe any round a bout should be two lanes. When you put lots of seniors in a double lane round a bout going too fast, it doesn't add up. I drive with the thought that everyone around me is going to do something wrong. It's saved my butt so far....

To me, the themes (besides following the rules) are:
--- "Don't travel any part of a roundabout beside another vehicle", and --- "Anticipate what others in or approaching the roundabout just might do". Bill :) |
On the other hand...
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that the number of 'near misses' seem to have lessened since the new roundabout signs were installed? In the last week or so I discovered that I arrived at my destination without my heart pounding and my palms sweaty. ;) |
Honestly....if folks can't figure out these SIMPLE RAB's & the SIMPLE rules, they need not be driving.
So, here we go again.... |
uujudy, I agree. It appears drivers have become more educated at using the roundabouts, at least the ones who are not driving here for the first time. The only "violations" I've seen in the last few weeks have involved cars with out-of-state plates.

:agree: Now if we could only get folks to READ and OBEY the speed limit signs and USE their turn signals! |

I mean the official octagonal red stop signs. I gave up long ago on the square stop signs in the golf cart lanes. |
One lane roundabouts?
You are kidding? Have you seen some of the backups on Bailey Trail waiting to go through the guardshack and RAB at Buena Vista? That is what every RAB would be like except probably worse. No thanks.
It really isn't that hard. We have new signs, there are arrows on the pavement showing where you are allowed to go in that particular lane and just don't drive next to another vehicle when in the RAB. |

:agree: about the "butt saving." I am a Verizon retiree, dating back to when we had a Bell System. We used to have driver training classes, in which the thrust was to "get the big picture" when driving. Those principles have stayed with me, and I wish more drivers would "get the big picture." :spoken: |
Don't fret about it. Most of the problems in the driving around The Villages are caused by the snowbirds either not knowing how to drive or the New York mindset of "it applies to everyone except me." The snowbirds will be heading back to their summer nests beginning real soon and sanity will again prevail until next November.

Not sure if snowbirds are the problem. Many snowbirds I beleive snowbirds probably drive more than villages residences.Could be lack of driving by villagers could be the problem.

This morning as I exited the Duval gate, I entered the inside lane of the RAB and was traveling to the third exit which puts me southbound on Buena Vista. As I was traveling around in the inside lane, I passed my first exit and as I was upon my second exit, a car entered the RAB in the right lane RIGHT NEXT TO ME and was traveling along side. As I slowed down to allow this person WHO DID NOT YIELD to me (I was already in the RAB) and was traveling to my third exit, I gave that person a look that let him know I was not happy with what he had just done. If I did not slow down, I would have been hit on my passenger side as that car continued to his first exit.
Please everyone...YIELD to anyone in a RAB no matter which lane the car is in and do not enter the RAB right next to another car even if it is in a different lane. That is what causes accidents. I have always said on this message board that I stagger with other cars in the RABs. Slowing down this morning avoided an accident. I do not trust anyone when they are in the RAB with me. I have no idea which exit they are going to take. |

But I do agree with your post stating the problem here in TV is due to poor design. However having said that since most, if not all of the residents of TV are from other parts of the country, primarily the north then one would have to assume that they are being subjected to the same sort of poor drivers they we find here. |
Yesterday I saw a person in a car pull out of the left lane and make a right cutting off the car in the right lane ...onto very busy 441/27.
I saw three golf carts not stop at all for stop signs. Where did these folks learn to drive? |
Why is everyone so surprised that we have our share of bad drivers during snowbird season? They are not used to the roads and they are trying to fit 10 pounds of poop into a 5 pound bag. Drive defensively and you will be fine!!!!!

I was discussing my close call in the RAB from this morning with my sister and BIL. Although my BIL does not agree with the rules, the way he understands it, I would have been issued the summons if an accident would have occurred. I don't understand how that is possible. Why would I have been issued the summons??? 1) I was in the correct lane to exit at my third exit. 2) I was traveling the speed limit around the circle. 3) The other car entered the RAB illegally because he did not yield to me, entered along side me and continued to travel along side of me. The other car would have hit my passenger side if the accident did occur. I avoided that collision simply by staggering with that other car and I did that by slowing down to a crawl as he continued on his merry way around the RAB in the outside lane. Seriously...would I have gotten the summons if the other guy slammed into the passenger side of my car??? |
You were doing the proper thing and according to the "newly clarified" rules the other car would have been issued the citation. See POA bulletin March, 2012 p. 4, titled, "Attention: Roundabout Right Lane Drivers."
