Smoking outside of Redsauce
Last Saturday evening I went to Redsauce to have dinner and a couple of drinks at the outside bar. I looked around and there were no tobacco junkies at the bar. I sat down and there was a empty seat next to me. By the time I got my drink, this guy in his 30's sat down and lighted up. I had already ordered a chopped anipasta salad. By the time I got my salad, this guy smoked two cigs. I got my salad and counted five more cigs he smoked while I ate my meal;. The couple next to me split because they could not take the smoke any longer. I tried to get my check so I could pay and get my butt into some clean air but the barmaid was busy due to the crowd. This guy went to light up again and I asked him if he ever came up for fresh air? He laughed as if it was a joke. I then told him he was a inconsiderate SOB and finally got my bill and quickly paid it and left. I went inside and talked to the female manager and she said that there was nothing that can be done about people smoking outside. Now I am all fired up. This guy doesn't even live in The Villages. Him and the other cigarette smoking drunks that hang out there don't even own a home in The Villages. They hang there only because it's cheap to drink there. I don't know about you, but I think the time has come to end ALL smoking at restaurants and outside bars in T:spoken:he Villages. Why do the majority of people need to smell that fowl smoke from the few that do smoke? Let me know how you feel as I am getting a movement going to end all outside smoking not only in the Villages but also in the entire State of Florida. Please email your congressman and State Senator and lets put a end to this smelling nasty smoke once and for all. ------And to you smokers that don't agree with me and are offended by this post, you brought this on yourself!!!!!

I think you should have moved and complained right away if it bothered you.
All I can say is this. I have gone to two funerals of close friends in the past year that were smokers.
I just wish people would stop for their own sakes. It is such a painful death. Sadly I feel that anyone who lives here in TV with us has an addiction of such length and depth and so merciless that stopping is going to be way more difficult than if they were younger. Practically impossible. I smoked and stopped quite some time ago, so I not some preachin' lady. I just HATE to smell it now. Nothin' worse than a reformed anything. |

My husband and I quit smoking 19 years ago. I quit 2 months before he had quadruple by-pass and he quit 2 weeks before. We have not smoked since and have trouble being in the same room with someone who smokes. I golf with ladies on Thursdays and a couple of them smoke but are very considerate to those who don't. I agree, smoking should not be aloud in inside or outside bars/restaurants.
This is just my opinion. |
So how would anyone feel sitting next to a person using an E-Cigarette, which has only water vapor (looks like smoke) and smells like cherries or vanilla ???
No second smoke... Just curious... |
It is hard to try to enjoy a meal when someone is smoking next to you. Coming from Washington State that doesn't allow smoking inside and outside it is hard to get used too. Sometimes the hour of the day is a little better. Oregon has the same laws about smoking, in fact at Civic Stadium, where most of the major sports are played you can't even smoke there. I wish they would ban smoking anywhere inside the curb area at the squares. You're sitting there trying to enjoy the music and someone is in the legal area to smoke and you have to put up with it, we usually move to a cleaner spot.
|
are we saying we want the non smokers to decide where they would like to frequent and then have smokers banned from those areas?
We have gone from smoke anyplace, anytime to smoking or non smoking inside, to no smoking inside and now suggesting no smoking outside? And then to ban smoking in the state of FL??? Sounds to me like the non smokers already have all the options as it stands today. But you want it banned in other areas just in case you decide you want to go there too. I hate to disappoint some of you but that is not a very equitable position to take. If you don't like the smoke stay out of the areas where it is allowed. THAT SOLVES THE PROBLEM!!! btk |

I don't smoke...haven't in 15 years or so and the smell of smoke really realy bothers me but.....:agree: p.s. nothing worse than being stuck behind an old gas cart with the driver smoking..IMHO |
The resturant situation is solved by moving inside. Now what we have to contend with is not solved. Our neighbors, who smoke like their home is on fire, prevent us from enjoying our lanai as their smoke drifts over and fills the air.
If the sliding doors are open, it comes into the house. I can't understand how smokers can stand to suck that stuff into their lungs. |
I just do not patronize any business where I felt that I was choking to death over second hand smoke. No need to be confrontational. Yes, sometimes I would speak to the management, but usually that would not solve anything.
If all non-smokers stop going to restaurants that allow smoking outside and they see their sales going down, then they will certianly listen to these complaints and do something about it. It's all about the money!! |

and further, billyworld - i cannot support your effort to strip individuals of another "right". as a non-smoker you already have the "right" to address the smoker politely asking them to not smoke until you have left the area OR to leave the area yourself. smokers are limited to designated areas already. it is not your "right" to deny someone the "right" to smoke themselves to death if they so choose. |
You have to do this at the State level...local governments are preempted by FL law.

smoking at restaurants
I feel sorry for the people who work the outside bars. They don't have any recourse other than to quit their jobs. Maybe it is up to us to protect them...
|
Frankly, I don't understand the appeal. I do understand that smoking is an addiction and those that do smoke will defend it and their right to do so. I find cigarette smoke very offensive and more importantly it is a health hazard. For those of us who chose not to smoke it will be an endless battle to avoid second hand emissions. It's possible to sit in a public place where smoking is not allowed, but how about having to walk through the area where people hang out to smoke, in order to enter or exit. It's unavoidable. Sure don't understand how some folks can even afford this nasty habit.

No smoking in bars and restaurants in Maryland
It has been several years that smoking was banned in public restaurants and bars. As a non smoker, I was relieved when the laws took effect.
There is nothing worse than coming home, reeking of smoke when I do not smoke. It is in my hair, on my clothes and just permeates everything. Many smokers are polite, and very courteus, but a few are not. There was a huge debate about the effect the law would have on the revenue of restaurants and bars. Guess what, after a very short dip, the effect has been Zero. People still patronize their favorite restaurants, and watering holes. I would vote in favor of stronger non smoking laws. IMHO |
35 years ago I had a sign in my office "I won't fart in your presence, if you don't smoke in mine". Still applies.
Hmm, maybe this would be a good tactic at the sidewalk restaurants that smokers frequent. Bottom line is that my right to avoid cancer caused by second hand smoke trumps anyone's right to smoke in public. |
Numerous states have laws that prohibit smoking in any public place. That would include parks, stadiums, food service, bars, any place of business, public transportation and bus stops, etc. My current home state, Hawaii, also prohibits smoking anywhere near the entrance/exit to these places as well. My wife and I pick up trash in our neighborhood several times a week and I can say from experience that smokers care little for the environment or your health. We pick up hundreds of cigarette butts and packaging every week. Disgusting dirty habit. You will never convince nicotine addicts that smoking is not good for anyone. I would like to hear from the smokers on this site the reason for dumping their butts out the vehicle window or stomping them on the sidewalk. That said, I have owned stock in Philip Morris since the 1980s and have profited hansomely from their addiction (revenge is sweet).

maybe we could try smoking and non smoking cities...nah that wouldn't work. Too many would complain about driving past it or the wind or who knows what.
It is obvious that there is NO SATISFYING the hard core no smoking advocates...almost as bad as guns VS no guns...ALMOST. I remember during the days when no smoking areas were just beginning to be discussed. WOW what a bombshell it was. But there were surveys and more surveys getting feedback from non smokers. Well if one fast forwards to today the no smoking advance has gone far beyond any smokers wildest dreams......and now they see fit to complain some more. There is just NO SATISFYING the complaining. And oh by the way there is as much to be read about businesses and bars that have had their business decline because of all the be eye itching about smoke. Many are allowing smoking in more areas....like it used to be.....much more non smoking space than 20 years ago...and not as much as the unreasonable, never satisfied non smoke proponents would like. There are a lot of things I do and places I will go or not go. The ones I don't like I DO NOT GO TO.....it is much more simple than trying to rally the world and make an enemy of a neighbor....really. btk |

Let me see if I have this straight. You chose to sit outside to eat. You knew that smoking was allowed in that outside area but, since there were no smokers present, that made it okay for you to dine outside and then complain when someone sat down to smoke near you? Sorry, the law in Florida permits smoking outside. You knew this. No question that if you don't like the law, you have the right to change that law.
Do you know for a fact that the young man smoking did not live in TV? Do you also plan to propose that non-Villagers be banned from the town squares, which are public areas? I wholeheartedly agree that if you don't like something, work to have it changed, but to rail against someone who is doing something entirely legal just doesn't sound right to me. You were flat out rude to the young man, who was technically within his rights to smoke. I rarely have a drink and never more than one if I'm out in public. Seeing someone drunk makes me downright uncomfortable and fearful. Drinking and driving is absolutely against the law. Too many have been injured or died because of drunk driving. Given these facts, should I now campaign to ban any public drinking? Should I complain when I see you have your third glass of wine in the square? Yes, smoke smells. Yes, second hand smoke can be dangerous (more so indoors than outdoors). Yes, smoke litter is unsightly. However, alcohol smells and if you spill some on me (has happened more than once), I take home the smell. Drinking has caused many deaths. Empty beer receptacles and plastic cups are seen all over TV after the squares close. I've had to avoid more than one of the small bottles of booze when driving my golf cart. Smokers have become second-class citizens. Can't raise taxes to the general populance, raise taxes for the "luxuries." I really doubt there is a smoker today who wouldn't quit if s/he could. Not everyone can. Regardless, the point is you chose to smoke where you KNEW smoking was allowed and then had the absolute gall to complain when someone dared smoke in your presence. |
I think that "bans" should go far beyond this ... basically everyone that does not think and act like I do should be banned from existence. :spoken:

you gotta love a person who speaks their mind...eh?
And SOME of you would be so kind as to not categorize "smokers" who toss their butts (cigarettes that is)......please use the proper, realistic case...SOME SMOKERS....remember that like everything else it is the minority (not race) that cause the problems. We do so frequently tend to tar a whole group with the inconsiderate actions of a very few. btk |
IMO, Florida would never pass a statewide ban on smoking because a large share of Florida's economy depends on tourism and why would you alienate 25% of the population? Drive through any beachside town on a hot afternoon and you'll find that the patio dining and bars are mobbed, while the indoor dining (no smoking areas) have maybe two diners. One of the reasons restaurants and bars weren't effected by the original smoking ban was because a lot of them very quickly added outdoor eating and drinking areas.

You're at the outside bar ordering a meal.....that was your choice. You acknowledge that you saw no smokers, meaning you knew smoking is allowed at the outside bar, and you took a chance........it didn't quite work out the way you hoped.
I'm not a smoker, but smoking is still legal in this country and the places where a smoker can smoke in public are very limited. We have plenty of recourse if we want to avoid smokers, they have little option of where to go. It not a big deal to be a little neighborly. |
I think the stench of smoking is disgusting, but I really do feel that when all indoor smoking has been eliminated, the least people can do is allow for outside smoking patio areas.
The bar outside at RedSauce is primarily for drinking. The place is in business to earn revenue from selling bar drinks. Prohibiting smokers at the outside bars kills their business and in these economic times, who wants to kill businesses?? And yes, all the businesses here need "townies" to come in and spend their money....and yes, local people do make it a lot more interesting here. I say "dine inside" if the smoke is too much outside. Or go somewhere else. There are more than enough non-smoking options now. |

and how many of the complaints come from people that fill the tunnels with polluted air,but when subject is brought up they try to make excuses for gas carts, not one of them care about the people who have problems with the polluted air. One even said the battery's went to dumps,False they are recycled, they are worth quite a bit.If they want to smoke let them hurt them self I will go inside or stay far away I don't have that option when driving cart unless I don't use it

hdh1470...if we didn't have as many hypocrites there would not be very much to talk about.
Way too many folks have the I'm OK it is the other guy who needs to change. Sorta like the non smoker who elects to eat his what ever in a smoking area. And then when a smoker enters, he tells the story as if his very space and rights were violated. HYPOCRITE. The smoking laws currently in effect have squeezed the smoker into almost no place else but outside. C'mon smokers don't be so greedy and unhospitable and hostile and just plain ornery.......you have many more choices....use them. Because at some point something you like will come under the microscope....like if you are against smoking you CANNOT have a stinky gas cart.....easy now just trying to inject a little humor...that is still OK I think! btk |
If this is the place on one corner of the square at SL the porch bar seemed to be a hangout for habitual smokers during the month I was in TV. I never even entered the place knowing full well some of the smoke from the porch would have found its way inside since after all, it is a gas. I'd as soon have gone in there as I would have voluntarily entered any other toxic waste site.
For the past twenty years or so I have lived in a beach community of Orange County, CA. I can go just about anywhere without unexpectedly encountering the stench and toxic components of tobacco smoke. Bars, indoor or out, indoor and outdoor eating facilities, even the beach are all clear of smoke - by law. It is wonderful! Like Florida, Southern California is a tourist mecca and we get our share of smokers from other states as well as from all over the world. Nevertheless, smoking controls are firmly in place and enforced. The tourists keep coming and all is well. If someone wants to smoke where it does not impact unwilling others, that is fine with me, especially if they smoke a Phillip Morris or Altria product since I own stock in those companies. That helps make up a bit for my higher taxes and health insurance premiums going to pay the additional medical costs due to some folks smoking, the largest public health cost this country faces. |
You were eating in a known, OUTSIDE smoking area and are mad that there was a patron smoking ?? Come on !! Next time dine in a non smoking area. I am all for the non smokers rights and am a former smoker myself, but don't get upset when a smoker is smoking in a smoking area !
|
These posts have got me thinking. We are going to buy a CYV and I love to smoke 2 cigars a day. I smoke the big ones that last about 2 hours each. When I smoke them in my yard are the neighbors going to be upset?
