Fifty Shades of Grey

Has anyone read it?

asianthree 06-05-2012 06:59 PM

is anyone going to admit reading it, bondage, soft porn and story line

jojo 06-05-2012 07:16 PM

Someone told me his wife's book club was reading it. Wouldn't that make for interesting conversation?

jnieman 06-05-2012 07:18 PM

I read all three. Very good story line.

Trish Crocker 06-05-2012 10:22 PM

I'll admit it! I'm on book three and enjoying all of them. I have to admit, I do gloss over some of the sex stuff...enough already!!...but I am getting educated about some things and like the characters and the storyline. The books do tend to open your mind to things that were hard to understand. It would be interesting to be at the ladies book club!

renielarson 06-05-2012 10:27 PM

I haven't read it and don't intend to. From what I have heard...not up my alley.

gerryann 06-05-2012 10:36 PM

I picked it up at the grocery store today. Haven't opened it yet. I agree it could lead to a very lively discussion at the book club. Love to be a fly on that wall.

graciegirl 06-06-2012 04:54 AM

I am going to have to read it. I hear it is vibrating. Or was that riveting? ;)

mickey100 06-06-2012 05:40 AM

I read the first novel - basically just another romance novel, with the soft porn/bondage twist to it. Just easy, light reading. I won't read the rest of the series.

You are just too funny Gracie!

Ohiogirl 06-06-2012 06:49 AM

I'm about 50 pages into it, nothing titillating yet, but soon. . .

But I wanted to respond to what someone said about not reading it, not her type of book. One of the things I love about being in a book club is that it forces me to read, or at least start, something that is maybe not my usual type of book. I've been pleasantly surprised sometimes, and read stuff I would never have picked up on my own.

It's kind of like going to college, at least if it's a college that is not a clone of your high school. You are exposed to lots of different types of people and trains of thought you may never have gotten to on your own. I think that's a good thing.

vacation reading

I am going on a cruise vacation next week... It is downloaded to my Kindle... Should make for a fun read....

Taltarzac725 06-06-2012 07:09 AM

It is back on some Florida public library shelves after being removed. '50 Shades of Grey' Returning to Florida Library Shelves After Ban - chicagotribune.com

I have been reading a new book by Anne Rice about werewolves which is steamy enough for me. I do not think I could handle Fifty Shades of Grey.

The new Anne Rice book is The Wolf Gift which is kind of boring IMHO.

2newyorkers 06-06-2012 07:16 AM

I read all 3 books. The books were written as Twilight fan fiction. If you read the Twilight series you can see the similarity between the 2 books. The books are very poorly written in the first person. That being said, the romance portion of the book is very nice and I can see many a couples sex life being spiced up after reading these books.

GG I originally wrote that I just love you but I'm afraid I'll be misunderstood so I'll give you three :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl: instead.

fifty shades of grey

hmmmm sounds interesting!! would like to get my hands on it! wonder if library carries it?

rjansen 06-07-2012 11:13 AM

On book 2 now!!

dfjcschaich 06-30-2012 08:07 AM

I got halfway through the first one and became bored with it. Had the same problem in my twenties with the historical romance novels. Kept waiting for the story to develop a plot, a mystery, anything but the female character constantly gushing over how good-looking this guy is! Oh, please! So many other really great stories out there to spend a few hours reading.

In awe of TV 06-30-2012 08:16 AM

I'm so with you on that.

:agree: Dfj, I got up to page 128 and couldn't take it any more. Gasp, gasp, gasp - the worst, childish writing I've ever read. Even though it's fiction I can't help to think about how many sickos will try to copycat the events. The 'action' was consentual but I thought is was so violent and unbelievable. I'm a passionate supporter and volunteer for Partnership Against Domestic Violence that I couldn't read anymore. Without further reading I catagorize these books as pure pornographic and demoralizing. I try not to judge, but I clearly do not understand the high focus this trash is receiving. Sad world. Ok, I'm done with my rant.

zcaveman 06-30-2012 10:24 AM

I reserved the book at the library to see what all of the fuss was about. Guess I will cancel that request based on the bored posts.

uujudy 06-30-2012 11:45 PM

So this book was not written by a hairdresser? ;)

debzaranti 07-01-2012 10:45 PM

UUJUDY.....ROTFL!!!!

Must be something wrong w/me....read all three and LOVED them! The "porn" was pretty soft....and got to be a bit much after a while, but I found myself becoming invested in the characters, Ana and Christian. For those who only read the first book...the second and third ones get more into the actual STORY, there's still the sex, but not quite as much. Good, light summer reading IMHO.

Deb

fraurauch 07-02-2012 06:02 AM

I'm with you, deb. I just finished #3 and now wish there were more. Also agree that #2 and 3 were better reads than #1.

Fifty Shades of Grey: Book One by E.L.James
Fifty Shades Darker: Book Two of the Fifty Shades Trilogy
Fifty Shades Freed: Book Three.....................

I read the first book on my Kindle; am presently halfway through second book of the trilogy.....with third also downloaded on the Kindle.

Everytime I did a book search, they kept recommending this book.....

By the second book, one realizes WHY Christian is like he is......
if you are interested in what makes people tick.....you will "get it".
Or, how childhood trauma can affect one's adult life............

I had no idea what the book was about when I ordered the first one.
However, I read everything and am a fast reader......devouring all books.

I had to put "Russka" on the back burner..........it's by the same author who wrote "New York".......Edward Rutherfurd.

Now, those are two EXCELLENT BOOKS. Russka is a novel on Russia from it's earliest days.......and New York, ditto..........Rutherfurd writes in a similar fashion of James Mitchener.

callmejoe 07-18-2012 09:48 AM

I am on the second book, and I really enjoy them. Very similar to the Twilight characters. So if you were sexually frustrated with the all the tension in the Twilight books, well- 50 Shades is just for you! haha.

JessieS 07-18-2012 10:42 AM

I read all three great books not to give it away but great love story.

Taltarzac725 07-18-2012 11:22 AM

Think I'll wait for the movies. I wonder if these will come to the Villages though? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifty_Shades_of_Grey

Trish,

I also admit to reading it. Also on book 3. There are so many women that go to our pool that also admit to reading it. Don't kid yourself, we admit however, many will not admit to it.

price drop on kindle for gray

DandyGirl 08-14-2012 09:40 AM

I'm halfway thru the second one and I am enjoying the series. I like to know what makes people tick. I think most of the sex stuff is about being open to new things that can turn out to be different from what you thought.

I'm with you. I never thought sex could be boring but this author managed to accomplish that. I kept thinking I had lost my place and was reading a page twice. Nope, just same scene and same dialog.:crap2:

The sex part at one point did drag on and on. I did find myself skipping around some of it, but overall I enjoyed the plot.

"Now, those are two EXCELLENT BOOKS. Russka is a novel on Russia from it's earliest days."

I agree, Russka was great.

50 Shades of Gray seems like it is a remake of The Story of O.

YES! I read them all. Although it was a bit far fetched but a good story anyway with a happy ending.

Richard1366 03-05-2013 12:14 PM

You have to read all three, the last one is very interesting and ties together the first book.
