Do you or will you rent your home here in TV?
Interesting to know if you rent your home now or plan to rent your home here in TV.
Tell us whether you will be someone who rents or just as interestingly someone who will NOT rent their house out to someone? There are many who do not plan to rent their homes. |
Yes, we will be renting our home for a year, maybe 2. Not retired just yet. Close on 7/27, in Sanibel. I'm planning on using someone to manage it. Found someone on TOTV that seems like will work very well, Vilas. She had several good recommendations, and after talking with her, she sounds GREAT! Hope it works out ok.

We have been snowflakes since 12/10. We originally planned on renting but our daughter took up residence in 5/11 after sher was laid off. She has been working down there since the fall and now will be purchasing her own home (just in time for me to retire in November). In thinking back, we probably never would have rented, we seem to be down there like a blizzard.

I purchased my home in December 2008 and have been renting it with success since I am not yet retired. I will be eligible to retire in June 2013, but am not sure if that will happen. If things happen the way I hope, this may be the last winter I will rent and then will be using my place to enjoy my retirement. I have been using my place at least once a year to do maintenance and upgrades as this will be my permanent home in the future. I have family in The Villages and a great house watch person that has helped make the rental process very easy.

The amount of money you could earn during the "desirable months" is pretty enticing. I keep reading how crowded it is here during those months so am wondering if that wouldn't be a good idea. Could enjoy TV in the off months and make some money during the on months. Just a thought going through my mind. Of course that leaves me with "where to go during that time and Arizona could be nice. Or maybe rent a motorhome and travel souther Texas and southern Arizona and a little bit of California. Random thoughts going through my "gypsy" mind.

look on thevillages4rent and you can see all the rentals

If I were renting I'd consult vacationrentals.com and the very first question I'd ask would be if there will be an on-site owner or manager there to welcome me and available if I need something during my stay. |

We were resigned to being snow birds but ended up with a property that we plan to rent after our previous home up north happened to sell (shock!) and this property was just to small for premanent residency. We're now full timers in Santiago. Figured we try renting it out as we had no equity in it and would possibly lose money after paying a commission. So now we're hip deep in painting and up-dating, hope to have it rental-ready by Sept 1st. I have to say all of the landlords we've talked with have been so helpful with suggestions and relating their experiences. God Bless "em!

I don't think I could ever rent out a house that I intended to live in full time. It has been my observation that people who are renters will not take care of rental property as well as they will their own. I know there are some, but most won't. We rented for a couple of months when we first moved down and I am thankful that we could, but I would rather have rented from The Villages if they had rental homes available. The house we rented had a few minor things while we were there and most I was able to take care of, but some I had to call the landlady about.

Built a retirement home (Gardenia) in Village of Charlotte in March of this year with the intention to rent it for a few years before moving down permanetly. I listed home on thevillages4rent.com and almost immediatley had home rented from August thru May of 2013. I use a "Home Watch" individual who has been absolutely outstanding and checks on the home on a weekly basis. PM me if you would like their name and #.

Bought our 1st home in TV in 2004. Rented it til 2006 while we still worked in NY. Moved here in 2006 and bought a second home. Put the 1st home back up for rent. Rented it til Dec 2011, then sold it. Just moved to our 3rd home and will be putting our 2nd home up for sale next month. Tired of handling a rental property, although we did very well with it.

My Mom is 88 and doesn't want to move to TV full time. It broke my heart when I decided the best way for me to go was to put my brand new Iris in the Village of Charlotte on the long term, unfurnished rental program with JD & V Property Management in May.
I think my home was on their website for two days when it was rented. |
[QUOTE=asianthree;520398]yes there are some who check the wrong box when first starting out,(pool) but most owners live here or have a home watch person who takes care of the check-in and out and stops by weekly to see how they are doing. Two bad posts out of over a 1000 homes for rent is not a bad ratio. Using the wrong property manager can be your biggest nightmare for you and your home. you will find many who swear by thevillages4rent and their homewatch person, who watches homes like they were their own[/QUOTE/
I don't know if you have an interest in the 4rent company, but you can't dismiss stuff by simply saying someone "checked the wrong box". Intentional or not, it's FRADULENT for owners to list amenities they don't have. Homes with pools rent for more than those which do not. What does the renter do if they show up and there is no pool? And it's obvious the website does no oversight to verify with owners that their homes ARE AS advertised. And the fact that this website will not advertise homes which have a property manager invites problems for prospective renters. What does the renter do about questions and problems if the owner's living or vacationing elsewhere? I rent my home when I'm not there. I have a terrific property manager who handles every detail, and is FULLY LICENSED. This GUARANTEES the renter recourse if anything is out of order from the date of reservation to the prompt return of the security deposit. Independent owners who rent are NOT licensed, so guests with problems are on their own. I am proud of the fact that I can rent my home and be certain that my guests have everything they need. It's great to get rave reviews in our guestbook, and to have a full calendar of reservations. |
We live in TV full time, but are planning on spending several months back in Panama each winter down the road (primarily to escape the cold but also to avoid some of the more crowded times in TV). I strongly considered putting our home up for rent when we are overseas, but my wife told me, "absolutely not!" So when the time comes, we'll be looking for someone to watch our home.

I was just speaking with, I believe is your property manager, Vilas. She will be managing my new home in Sanibel. After talking with her just 2 times I am very confident that she will take good care of my home. Thank you for recommending her...

We came down for a LSV and fell in love. Couldn't leave without buying a house even though we wouldn't retire for 4 years. It made no sense really but we were so in love with TV we had to buy the house we saw. Long story short, we bought it, found a property manager and rented it out unfurnished. So far so good. All I have to do is pay the monthly bill and try to forget my longing to BE in TV already. The first few months were extremely painful but it's getting easier and it sort of feels unreal that we really own the house now. I don't know how we gave in to this impulse buy on something we can't really use for so long but it'll be waiting for us when we can move down. So far so good on the rental and we just have to hope that it stays rented until we are ready to move. In retrospect I guess we should have waited. I don't know if we are making or losing money, and frankly I don't WANT to know because we are in the middle of it and we aren't selling. My head is in the sand and I'm happy to keep it there for now.
