Conceal and Carry Permit?
Anyone know of a good place locally to get a conceal and carry permit? Don't always want to carry, but want the option if it seems like a good idea at some point.
|
You need to PM Figmo Bohica on this site.
|
Is the permit (if you have one) just good in Florida or does it transfer to other States? Illinois is the only State (I hear) that does not let you have the conceal carry permit.

your can't transfer from ohio

The Gun Shop Inc. & Gun Range 1310 West SR 44 Leesburg FL, 34748 (352)787-4570 www.gunrange.net Opening Hours: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 10:00am - 7:00pm Saturday Sunday 10:00am - 5:00pm |
I just mailed in my application on Thursday. Go to this website:
Concealed Carry Reciprocity - Division of Licensing, FDACS On that site you will need to download about 50 pages. The Florida Handbook for you're own reference. The 2 page application and about 5 pages of instruction. You'll need fingerprints. I went to the Lady Lake Police Dept, at the redlight in front of Kohl's on Hwy 441 go east and it with be located by the city hall. They will do those on Tuesday & Thursday the hours were midday, I forget exactly. You give them $10 and then they take the prints electronically and send to Tallahassee. Get an instruction booklet from them, when you get home you'll need to go online within 30 days and pay $40 for those prints. You'll need a passport photo, you can get that at CVS $10. You'll need gun training. If you're veteran, such as I, just make a copy of your DD214 and that is all you need. Otherwise you'll need to take a gun course. I managed to get everything done in one day. When you have it all, you'll need to write a check for $70 and include it with all the materials and send to the P.O. Box on that website. If you've had a DUI in the last 3 years then you're not qualified until 3 years has elasped. I hope this helps you. On my softball team several guys got theirs and I knew pretty much what I needed. I'm from Maryland and I checked and every state from here on the way, Georgia, S. Carolina, N. Carolina and Virginia will accept the permit, however Maryland will not. |

If I copied this link correctly, you can plan a trip and this site will tell you where you are allowed to carry.
You can also check out the NRA. They have a section on reciprocity Hope this helps http://apps.carryconcealed.net/packngo/index.php |
I have a carry/conceal license from Massachusetts and they are not on the reprocity list, probably because Massachusetts won't reciprocate with any body. If I go for a Florida license will I still have to take the gun course I wonder.

BTW - Mass., NY and NJ seem to be the worst! |
Add Illinois to the "worst" list.

Not to ruffle any feathers on the newcomers - but do you honestly think you need to carry a pistol while in The Villages?
There has only been one shooting in the 3 years I have been here (that I know of) and that was a domestic dispute between two ex-police officers at their home. There have been a couple of times reported that a person with a concealed weapon permit showed their pistol in a threatening manner and got arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. There are also places that it is not allowed to carry a concealed pistol such as in a bar or bar area of a restaurant. As I said, this was not to ruffle feathers. If someone has a legal permit to carry, I have no problem with it - except what is the necessity while in The Villages? |

It is very difficult to obtain a permit to conceal and carry in Massachusetts. I have had mine for over forty years and I haven't touched or shot one of my pistols probably in the last twenty years and I probably will never do either again, but I don't want to give up the license that I have and I want to have the legal right here in Florida as I had in Massachusetts that's all.

I would definitely agree that Figmo is the best around to train and counsel about firearms - as well as being a heck of a nice guy.

The thought that I could be chatting with some friendly, smiling person, all the while not knowing that he has a loaded pistol concealed on his person, makes me very uncomfortable. Why do you need a pistol in The Villages?

The thought that you could be chatting with someone who has had no training, has not had a background check and is "packing heat" should worry you a lot more that someone who has had a background check, some training and knows the concealed carry laws. Let's get real, the world, that includes The Villages, is not all warm and fuzzy, bad things do happen, will happen and do happen. Insurance is insurance. Get the idea. If you want the knowledge about carrying in Florida, PM me for any information about obtaining a permit, or anyother question that you may have. |
Question!! If some states don't reciprocate, then where can you store your gun, while carrying it through another state, and still be in the law?

Just saying.... |
Figmo is 100% right !
Besides, that "friendly, smiling person" is still that - whether he/she is carrying or not! Most of my current neighbors have no knowledge that I have a license and I prefer it that way. Not looking to be a John Wayne type. I enjoy target shooting and having protection is a benefit. IMO the less people that know the better - don't want someone trying to break in to my house because I have guns and trying to steal them. |

some states - the weapon and ammo must be separated and each in a locked box (basically) in the trunk where you can not access it. This is from New York: § 926A. Interstate Transportation of Firearms Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. |
Here is a site that will help all of you that are traveling with firearms. Handgunlaw.us
It is updated with what we all hope is the current information, but if in doubt, call the State AG's office of the state that you will be traveling through and get the current reading of the law. Write down exactly what the AG's office said along with the name of the person who said it. Each state is different, for general knowledge there are a couple links off of our Eustis Gun Club IDPA site (Eustis Gun Club - IDPA) that will help you in all this. If you have specific questions you can PM me and I will try to answer them for you or direct you to someone who can. |

I have been thinking about your post since it came online at 5:30 this afternoon. I just can't pull any logic out of it. I don't "Get the idea." What I can get out of it is that you truly believe in what you are saying. You are also not doing anything against the law. What I wish for you is that you are never put in a position where you will kill someone, guilty or innocent, with that firearm. |

The basic questions about the procedures for obtaining a carry permit have been answered. The discussion is once again veering into the "need to carry" debate. This thread will be closed. Feel free to start a new thread on a different topic.
