The World's Scariest Runways
This takes a while if you check out all of the runways. Interesting and a few times breathtaking.
NY's JFK is No. 9 and DC's Reagan is No. 15 World's Scariest Runways - Articles | Travel + Leisure |
Absolutely HATE landing at Laguardia.
You always think you are going to end up in the Long Island Sound ! Just kinda close my eyes and pray. Then. . . WHOOMP! you are on the ground. |
ketchikan alaska, a mountain at both ends of the runway. Just close you eyes and hope for the best.

Flew into Reagan International last weekend and will fly from JFK this weekend. I think the ride to the airport (especially the Belt Pkwy) is scarier than the flight.

We have a timeshare in St. Maarten. We love to sit at the Sunset Bar & Grill in Maho & watch the planes come in. Especially KLM/Air France. It is really cool. They are so low ! When the big planes leave, they blow everyone in the water if the are standing in the right spot.

The sariest runway was in Hawaii on the island on Maui, (if I remember correctly). You saw nothing but water until the wheels hit the ground.
LaGuardia is no bargain either with wind shears affecting the planes descent and sometimes a steep banking of the plane on descent.. Dulles airport, (now Reagan), was the worst airport to fly into. I was coming back from L.A. and we were stuck for 16 hours waiting to get out. I will avoid this airport like the plague. |

St Thomas in the USVI has a nice mountain past the end of the runway that you have to clear on takeoff and it makes the climb out a little interesting.
St. Maarten is a trip to fly into as is St Thomas. Water keeps getting closer to the plane and closer and closer and then bang you hit the runway and the thrust reverser at about the same time. St. Barts is another fun filled landing. Come over a mountain and then a very sharp almost dive to the runway. No big planes allowed here. VG |
