The Best Deal in Town - Really??

The advertised lunch deal at Glenview CC sounds great. $5.00 gets you the lunch special which normally consists of a small bowl of soup and a very small 1/2 sandwich. Of course, this price is only valid with the purchase of a beverage ($2.09) Now add tax of $.43 and your $5.00 special is now $7.51. Add a reasonable tip and your $5.00 lunch deal has now cost you $9.00. Such a deal!

Drink water!

Just do not go back if the price is to high.

buggyone 08-14-2012 06:31 PM

Sure, there are minimums such as buying a drink in order to buy the special. Big deal. It is well noted so if you do not want to buy a drink to get the special, get something else or go somewhere else.

At Katie Belle's anytime of the day, there is a $5 minimum purchase per person. It is well marked, too. If you just go in for a Coke at the bar and get nothing else, it will cost you $5 per person. As long as the minimum purchase is marked in plain view, no problem. Either pay it or go somewhere else.

Our golf group ate there Friday and I had the soup and half sandwich special and felt that it was plenty to be eating at lunch. The sandwich was the turkey club and it was anything but small. As far as the drink being~$2.00 that is true but that is also for all your refills. You drink 3-4 glasses of tea or soda then you have more than paid for it.

Anywhere you go to eat these days, the (non-alcoholic) drinks are expensive. What's worse is that most restaurants don't put the price of beverages on their menus.

kentucky blue! how confrontational! your language! $9 to some is a serious amount of money for lunch! it might work fine for you, but you are wrong to judge that it is or should be right for everyone! some folks spend just a little bit more and get a dinner for the price. we're called budgeters - and it just might be how we got to live in the villages!

ilovetv 08-20-2012 08:38 PM

As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for."

The fact that GCC added the required drink purchase tells me that people b****ed about the $5 lunch, too. And the drink purchase is also because of people squeezing lemon wedges into the water glass to make their own "free" lemonade.

I'm seeing more and more nowadays that many people have never worked in a business where they can see there are fixed operating costs that the owners have to pay, regardless of whether only 3 customers came in during a shift when it's pouring rain etc.

Even if one has a bottle/can of soda from home in the car when they go thru the drive-thru at McDonalds or Taco Bell, the bill is going to be $5 or more without a drink. Of course, one wouldn't have to TIP at these drive thrus, so maybe that is the solution.

jimmemac 08-20-2012 09:09 PM

A $6 sub from Sweetbay is hard to beat for anyone wanting lots to eat!

Doesn't appear to me that the original post had anything at all to do with bitching. Believe it was simply pointing out that it's bogus advertising to tout a $5.00 lunch that actually costs a lot more.

I guess the $5 lunch was actually $7 because a mandatory drink was required. Rustynail was giving a "restaurant review" of the lunch special at Glenview. Always good to hear others posters' opinions.

graciegirl 08-21-2012 06:19 AM

Glenview is such a beautiful country club atmosphere in which to eat; very traditional, lovely fireplace, manly wooden bar, nice ambiance. It is LOUD on the lanai but still beautiful. The meals we have had there after nine holes of golf with the girls are yummy and not expensive. I have found the service to be amazing, in fact one server remembers that our Helene asks for water, no lemon.

Seven dollars isn't a lot for lunch. And njbeachbum, if people are watching their budjet than not lunching out too often is the solution.

We seniors can fuss about anything. I am quitting soon and becoming a young person and I will do all the dumb things they do, and report back here if I like it any better..;) I am going to start by buying a house I can't afford. ;)

GG, If you would write a column for the Daily Sun, I would never start my day before reading it.

Peachwave Frozen Yogurt in Colony Plaza is a new favorite of ours for mid day lunch...pay by the pound. Many different flavors, so you don't get tired of the same old thing. Also have always felt The Cattle Baron's $10 Dinners an Excellent Value. Salad Bar with soup and beards included. The $10 meals you'll also like the large portions.

You'll find allot of coupons for places to eat do the same thing. Example, 1/2 price with the purchase of a beverage

asianthree 08-21-2012 07:06 AM

lunch at peachwave

Well if you think about it your not spending to much more to go for lunch than if you just stayed home and made lunch after you add in cost of food and gas to and from the store.

you are absolutely right, graciegirl! and that is why dining out in the villages is always a treat for us - even on a limited budget!

am so looking forward to the fall trip to maine where the treat is a dinner of 3 1lb lobsters for $21 which includes soup and salad bar! i have one lobster for dinner and take the other 2 home for 4 lobster roll sandwiches - sometimes 2 sandwiches and a dinner size casserole for two of lobster mac & cheese, and a big pot of homemade lobster bisque soup all for that price! yum! and the first meal is served to me! yea! that's the way i like to stretch a budget! :)

Shimpy 08-21-2012 03:04 PM

You're paying for the atmosphere of a country club that goes along with your lunch. Quite different than McDonalds or Peachwave.

Problem is with our generation we remember when $9.00 would buy you a Prime Rib dinner. In fact a Lobster dinner! I happen to think $9.00 for a lousy burger is NOT CHEAP! And as far as the $2.00 ice tea it cost about a dime to make it so the profit on tea is really what pays the rent!

When that Prime Rib dinner cost you $9 and iced tea or soda cost was about 10 cents, just remember that your earnings were maybe $7,000 per year.

Glenview CC has some very good food for reasonable prices. It offers the ambiance of a country club and not McDonald's or Subway. Enjoy dining at a nice place once in a while and remember that you have saved all your life to be here in The Villages. Enjoy yourself.

Last I knew ST was getting three bucks for a beverage! If you look around when you are going to and from your booth/table you will note that most people at ST are drinking water (as we do).

so right, dirigo! the cost of a beverage anymore is why folks are making their own 'lemonade' at the table!!!!!...and are not in the least embarassed by doing so!!!!!

I'm thinking that someone has forgotten NY prices.
