Fresh fig receipes
Does anyone have any ideas for fresh figs? I have two trees now and they are very ripe and unsure as to what to do with them. Any receipes or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Fig preserves! My grandfather used to make it all the time with the ones from his back yard if I didn't eat too many off the trees. Sure miss that! Don't see many anymore. You can have them all year if canned.

boil down some balsamic vinegar until it becomes syrupy. Slice your figs in half, and pour the balsamic reduction on the figs. Enjoy
barbecue halved figs...they become sweeter still, and are delicious eat them just the way they are. We always had a fig tree behind the house...in Queens, NY. How it managed to survive for more than 30 years is beyond me, but it produced fruit for all those years. |
Grill and eat or just slice and snack or add to your Greek yogurt in the morning. YUM

I have never tasted a fresh fig. Do they grow in Ohio and I just didn't know about it?

Thanks to all for all the suggestions. I have to agree that eating them fresh from the tree is the best way. Unfortunately, they all come at once and I'm the only one that really eats them. Kevin, my husband, may eat one or two. I've shared them with my neighbors and much to my surprise they don't like them either. GEEZ! :shrug: So, what I decided to do was search the sites everyone gave me, read the receipes everyone sent and I came up with my own concoction. I rinsed and removed the stems, cut in quarters and placed in a pot with a tiny amount of water and sugar and cooked them down for about 2 hours. I cooled them down, placed them in my blender on puree and now I have my own version of Fig "Butter". I just hope it freezes well for future use. Thank you all for your advise. There are still many on the tree left so if you come up with any more idea's please send them to me. I appreciate all suggestions. One day I hope to be in the Villages with my Fig Trees and then I will share them with you all. :mmmm: ................. Josie :icon_wink: |

Here is a picture of my latest batch of figs and my trees. Unfortunately, "Issac" is beating them up right now. These are the first pictures we ever attached so hopefully it works. This is my Mission Fig Tree (smaller upright bush on right with smaller fruit) Turkey Fig Tree (larger bush on left with larger fruit) |

I sure miss fresh figs! The preserves in the store are usually from California and not as good as eastern ones. Their peeling is tough. |

I went grocery shopping at Walmart today and found some fig preserves from a company in Georgia named Braswell (green label, small jar). They were excellent if anyone is interested.

It's super easy to make fig preserves if you have the preserving equipment.

Figs are awesome in "green smoothies", as they add a sweetness to the drink. They have many health properties. You are so lucky to have such bounty!
