62 miles

1 Hr, 15 Minutes from my house too.

(68 miles and 1 Hr, 35 minutes from Lakeport, CA to Santa Rosa, CA Trader Joe's)(and that's over the dangerous Hopland Grade - 97 miles if you stay on a more level and less winding road).

Trader Joe's isn't a weekly destination for us.

No. In Naples and in Sarasota.

Chuckw 09-12-2012 06:09 AM

Not golf cart accessible though; Darn....

janmcn 09-12-2012 07:51 AM

According to the newspaper, the grand opening last week in Sarasota was very sucessful with people coming from all over the area to attend. It was also announced in that article that a store will be opened in Tallahassee in addition to the one in Gainesville.

I've been to two Trader Joes in the NYC metro area and I don't recall seeing anything there that Fresh Market doesn't sell as well. Is it nostalgia or do other Trader Joes offer something really unique that I may have missed? Neither TJ or FM are cheap, so what's the attraction?

I see a daytrip in my future!
yes, I am clairvoyant now.....I have been wanting to go to the butterfly garden in Gainesville, so I can combine that with Trader Joe's. Anybody want to go with me?

asianthree 09-12-2012 08:34 AM

??? Disney is not in Gainesville???

I agree with gryoung,, I have never understood the hype of Trader Joe's. They were all around me in LA and I never used them... However, if you were talking about a really good and healthy place to shop,,, rather than going to Gainesville to TJ, why not go to Orlando or Tampa to Whole Foods?? Now your talking. Much more beneficial to your health and much better quality items.

jblum315 09-12-2012 10:09 AM

Whole Foods - otherwise known as Whole Paycheck. No thanks.

chuckinca 09-12-2012 11:16 AM

Two Buck Chuck.

.

shcisamax 09-12-2012 11:17 AM

Kathie, How can you say you don't understand all the hype if you never went in? Yes, they aren't Whole Foods which is wonderful but Trader's does have a lot of products that are terrific and ridiculously inexpensive. I would stock up on fabulous cheeses there and save a bundle.

Since we need to make trips to Shands in Gainesville, every three months, looks like we will be making a 2 mile detour on our return.

So is all the excitement about items that Fresh Market sells but Trader Joe's sells for a lot less? Now if you were comparing Zabars or Dean & Deluca's both NYC landmarks, I'd agree, Trader Joe's charges significantly less but Fresh Market's prices are not all that unreasonable--IMHO.

hotrodgirl 09-12-2012 04:49 PM

Trader Joes has a lot of things you don't find elsewhere. Lots of foreign foods as well as the best frozen section ever. They have things you would not necessarily find at the regular grocer, plus their prices rock! Great cheese section, as well as wines, and wonderful appetizers. Yum! Time for a party!!

buggyone 09-12-2012 06:27 PM

There was a Trader Joe's about a half mile from my home in Maryland and I hardly ever went there. I would go there in the summer for the Trader Joe Triple Shot Expresso drink in a can to take to the office. Not much else there except some frozen food now and then. Nothing special at all, in my opinion. Would I drive to Gainesvilles for it? No way!

Bosoxfan 09-12-2012 06:32 PM

Orange Mandarin Chicken - I miss it and will travel to Gainsville to get it.

Love the Orange Mandarin Chicken. Love the potstickers too, and the dipping sauce.

I understand your feelings since there was a Trader Joe's near me in CA. Like the one you described in that it was mostly frozen food. I was not impressed. Recently, I visited my son in Chicago and there was one across the street from our hotel. My DIL mentioned she shopped there a lot as well as the Whole Foods in the other direction. So, we went in to take a look and it was a completely different store from the one in CA. Fresh food and vegetables as well as other foods. There were frozen foods as well, but it was a much more complete food store. Now, I was impressed. I hope the one in Gainesville is as complete.

punkpup 09-12-2012 07:04 PM

Trader Joe's ROCKS!!!!!

Yeah Kath, I can't believe that you've never patronized them b4!!!!

Whole Foods is OK but they are kind of pricey to say the least!!! Fresh Market is OK too, love their roasted chickens and wonderfully fresh coffee. Nothing beats Walmart or Sam's for bulk and/or party shopping though but neither has the best fresh veggies. Love local vendors for fresh fruit and veggies.

GatorFan 09-12-2012 07:06 PM

Fresh Market does not compare to Trader Joes

Down Sized 09-12-2012 08:45 PM

You would drive 150 miles to by some groceries??? Then have to discuss prices that are less than other stores.

justjim 09-12-2012 08:56 PM

Trader Joe's or Whole Foods never been part of my world. Cousin Fred's or Grandpa John's anybody!

Figuringitout 09-12-2012 09:36 PM

I too love TJ, I first went to one in Manhattan Beach, CA, they do have some unique items and they tend to be cheaper on more unusual items. They have a great Ginger bread cake mix that comes out around the end of October and disappears after Christmas, they will carry different items by season and many great wines cheaper. 2 Buck Chuck is a great example, it is $2 in CA more depending on the state, they sell that wine by the case. Many people I know that love wine love 2 Buck Chuck. I got on their web site and told them they need to build by or in the Villages, hopefully someday they will. :pepper2::pepper2:

It's not 150 miles to Gainesville. More like 65. And yes I would. To buy (not by) some groceries, not to discuss prices. So shoot me.

GOJODO 09-13-2012 06:04 AM

We were at the grand opening of Trader Joe's in Naples, the crowds were so big it took 4 police officers to manage the traffic! They gave a dozen roses to every woman in the store.

UpNorth 09-14-2012 12:29 PM

60+ miles away? If you are lucky enough to get 30 miles to a gallon, that's a
$16 trip in gasoline. Trader Joe's has some pretty good stuff, but not worth that kind of trip IMHO.

Never really thought about the cost of gas but if you're getting only 20 miles to the gallon, that's $24 at the current rate of $4 a gallon to go 120 miles to Gainsville. BTW, gas here in NY is running $4.25 to $4.35 a gallon.

rockyisle 10-13-2012 04:07 PM

I say we need to get a road trip together for the grand opening. I have my two Trade Joe's frozen food sacks and am ready to go when they open. We live in NH during the summer and I stock up the moment we arrive home. If you enjoy a vegetarian life style, their tofu products cannot be beat... I'm so excited....

Cantwaittoarrive 10-13-2012 04:13 PM

I would drive to buy their $3 wine. If you buy a couple of cases it more than makes up for the cost of gas then any food you buy the savings is a bonus

cbg150 10-13-2012 04:38 PM

Trader Joe's is wonderful! I would make an outing of it and take an occasional field trip to Gainesville. I am so spoiled having them a few blocks away now! I am sure I will enjoy a little piece of NYC, even as I appreciate my new Florida lifestyle!

I'm definitely up for a road trip to TJ's.

We would go to our son's in Northern NJ and shop at TJ's. We leave Staten Island and last year they opened one there..........
