Phone Book
We will have two phone books this year. The Villages phone book has been done for years by a quality phone book publishing company based in South Carolina. The Villages decided they wanted to throw them out and control yet another piece of The Villages Media.
What they didn't count on is that phone book company continuing to publish the book, as they have always done. So what did The Villages do. They embarked on a smear campaign in all of the media that they control by Monopoly: the newspaper, the magazine, the radio, the cable station, and even the ads at our movie theater. All off the news that they do or don't want you to know. They tried very hard to smear the people that have been producing a very nice phone book for us for years now. I suggest you spread the word to support the original phone book, which will be the one that does not have the villages logo. We need some competition in our media here. |
What would be even better would be a searchable database so we could search for Villagers by home town!

Why is it that so many first time post always seem to have an ax to grind??
|
Maybe because this is the only forum that allows open discussion.

Be careful what you say......................

Very good. I will behave. I would just like to see some competition in our media, but thank you for your comments.

I am not familiar with the phone book issue... can someone fill me in? I guess this one completely slipped by me. |
This is for businesses:
Data Publishing | The Villages, FL Directory I am still looking to see if I can find the listings. |

I like The Villages phone book that has the names of all of us and where we came from. I like the pictures on the front, I like the emergency numbers, all the pertinent stuff. I am for free enterprise and big companies being successful and doing the job right and providing jobs for folks. I like that the Morse family provides us the Movie theatre and the magazine and the radio station. I like both of the restaurants that are owned by The Villages; The Lighthouse and Cane Garden, their restaurants are run well. So far The developer gets an A+ from us G's and most everyone we know. The whole state of Florida is teeming with homes for sale. There are lovely retirement areas in Arizona and on the coasts. I personally think that this is the best. Hooray for the developer and his phone book. No one does it better! P.S.I have found that the techy stuff, computer stuff, they are still not in the forefront on that...but hey..so far so wonderful! |
so plus for me one for TV house and one for up north

I checked with Data Publishing and there is not an online directory for the white pages as there is for the yellow pages at Data Publishing | The Villages, FL Directory

I must be really thick. I fail to see an issue.

Ok well, first I am seeing things from a different perspective as I am a resident and also a small business owner. It is very hard to keep a business open here due to the high cost of rent that the developer charges and the high cost of advertising since they control every piece of the Media. I love it here also. I think it is a great place. I think the developer has done a great job. All I would like it to have a small piece of competition in the advertising media. As it is, they crush anyone that tries. I just like having another advertising option. The bottom line is phone books are a thing of the past anyway. Now we will have two big thick books to put under our computer monitors. Interestingly, this very site is a nice media alternative and I do appreciate it.

Okay, I guess that explains that.!

Second phone book
I understand there is a second phone book being delivered, which is separate from the official The Villages phone book. This one is shrink-wrapped, and so far has not been delivered to everyone. Supposedly this phone book has listings by home town.
Two different neighbors have received one, and they closed after we did. Does anyone know how we can get one? Thanks, Gail |

The new shrink-wrapped one showed up in our driveway today. Now we have a stack of phone books 8" high!
|
|
For those of you that don't want all those phone books, please go online and opt out of delivery. You will still get your Villages phone book. This just eliminates those 8 other phonebooks that you never use.
https://www.yellowpagesoptout.com/zipcode/32162 It takes a few minutes to create an account but is well worth saving all those trees. When you are going thru the steps it seems like you are signing up to get all the books until the end...then there is the buttom to opt out. |

If you are looking for exposure for business listings and advertising in print media, the "yellow" pages is not the place to spend your money. Digital is the only way to go. Don't fight it. Exploit it.
|
Neither phone book has us listed, and we've been here since January. Go figure...
|
We received our second book shrink wrapped and all, but it had our former address in it and not our new one in Sanibel. The "official" Villages book is correct.

"Is Disagreement Disloyaty?"
Well I see upon reviewing this thread that The Villages Politically Correct squad is at the top of their game. I subscribed to the old adage that " disagreement is not disloyalty". However we have this PC squad that believes it is their moral obligation , in fact an imperative to come to the aid each and every time they believe a member on this blog takes the name of "The Villages' in vain. For instance the member that cited the tendency of The Villages to maintain a monoply is spot on. For those of us who have lived here a while that fact becomes obvious and if you are so inclined will find many merchants in and around TV complaining about this fact. Sumter One is a prime example. I suspect that if this PC squad lived in America in 1775 they would have screamed at American for being traditors and wanting the Declaration of independence. Long live King George! Geeezzzzz |
