Golf Cart Vs UTV
 

Curious if anyone has ever checked into the use of a UTV in TV versus an electric or gas golf cart. I hear that side by side UTV's would be a good choice over a golf cart in getting around in the villages. Don't know what requirements and limitations would be but have heard one could save several $K over purchasing a golf cart.

Oh, my that is what I though you were talking about but for the life of me couldn't imagine why someone would want something I used for rock climbing in the desert would want this vehicle in TV. Don't think it's what you want here - they are powerful and rough and fun to drive, but don't know where in TV you could have that experience.

UTV stands for Utility Terrain Vehicle. Many states are now allowing street legal versions. They are about the same size as a golf cart and can be driving on cart paths. The tires are not "DOT" rated but you can upgrade and have tires that are allowed on golf courses as well. It is a matter of what one would intend to use it for. You will have to get a street legal version, register the vehicle with the state and put plates on it. You cant drive it on the multi modal paths or the golf courses as it is not a golf cart (20 mph max) or a low speed vehicle (25 mph max). And don't forget insurance...

True...However, FL statues allows you to classify it as an OHV which requires one to only title it and have it inspected to meet registration requirements. You can get a 392cc version which is about the same HP rating as a Yamaha 352cc w/EFI, as well as, same dimensions as a golf cart. Larger versions would definitely not meet the MPH limitation you note for modal path operations. Many thanks for the info.

I always stop and look at one that is on the floor at Home Depot. Looks nice and priced a little cheaper than a gas golf cart.

I own one from Home Depot. We were looking for something that had 3-point seat belts, roll bars and generally more sturdy than our Club Car. We chose the electric because the gas version is even louder than the typical gas golf cart.

I must admit, if I were a golfer, I wouldn't have it. It's not bigger than a golf cart (a little taller) but doesn't maneuver as well as a cart. However, it's fine what what we use it for. It is heavier that a typical cart so we don't get as many miles on a charge but still have enough juice to go wherever we want.

Title or no title you will not be able to legaly operate it on the streets in TV because these streets are maintained by the county for public use. Only golf carts and registered LSVs are allowed on the streets in TV.

To meet the definition of 'golf cart', it must not be capable of exceeding 20mph. Most ATV/UTV/OHV vehicles are capable of twice that speed.

Did you buy one after all? My husband and I saw a gas-powered "Bulldog" UTV at Home Depot and were wondering what the restrictions on golf carts are on the golf courses. Home Depot said that they comform to the regs as long as the tires are the kind used on golf carts (no deep treads). I absolutely love the look of these things--they look like little jeeps with rollbar and all! Hope someone has any advice or opinion?

No, you still can't drive them on the path. They go 30-32 miles per hour. You cant drive a bulldozer or a crane on the paths either. You cant drive ANYTHING that is capable of exceeding 20mph except an LSV which must be tagged, insured and may not be capable of exceeding 25mph.

I own the electric version and can only go 20MPH. (As a matter of fact, because of its weight, it won't maintain that speed on the small inclines we have in TV) I can assure you that the battery powered UTVs from Home Depot do NOT go any faster than a legal golf cart.

I have a UTV/GolfCart conversion of a American Sports Works gas-electric (yes, both !!) Hybrid 2WD/4WD "golf cart". It has Village golf courses approved Turf Tires, is only inches larger than most carts (fits in all tunnels and parking spots). Has seating for four, with 3-point seat belts. The rear facing bench seat converts into a tiltable truck bed. It has a Subaru 4-stroke v-twin, 653cc gas engine, 4 12v sealed cell batteries with sealed on-board charger (i.e. just plug-in to any a/c outlet). Top speed 22mph, 18mpg (gas), and CVT transmission, on-demand 4wd, custom black ballistic nylon side curtains. Call me 352 753 8120. Ron
