Straight Talk Cell Phone Plan from Walmart
I am asking if anyone has used the Straight Talk Unlimited Talk, Text and Web service from Wal Mart? What are the pros and cons? It sounds too good to be true and many time that can be a problem. Are the call clear when you are talking on the Wal Mart phone. We travel up the north east corridor frequently and want to be able to make calls when necessary. Any comments would be much appreciated. Thanks

I have the 'limited' plan ... $30/month ... 1000 minutes talk, 1000 messages ...
Good reception and quality, and texting works fine. I just use it as a phones, and not for any internet 'smart phone' services, so don't know if those services are also good. I am happy with the plan. |

There are a few places in the mountains in PA and West Virginia where I lost service while traveling. Other than that, I highly recommend the Walmart phone. |

I have the Samsung Proclaim from Straight Talk that uses the Verizon network. It is a very nice smart phone. I have the $45 month unlimited plan and my husband has the same phone with the $60 month unlimited international plan so I can call my brother in Canada. We are both satisfied with the coverage and the apps.

I think Verizon is less $$ unlimited about $30

Straight Talk is a registered trademark of TracFone Wireless. TracFone works great for me, but I just wanted a phone.
Good comparison on the services provided. http://www.compare-prepaid-cell-phon...-tracfone.html |
Virtually all of these various "independent" plans such as WalMart's Straight Talk and others operate by purchasing time from the major suppliers such as Verizon & AT&T. If you are buying onto one of these services your signal is riding on the same platform as somebody who has a brand-name contract with Verizon or another major supplier. Your signal is not being handled by the "Screen Door Cell Phone & Feed Mill Company of East Plowhandle Georgia", so your reception should not be a problem. For the most part, people who mostly just want to make a call are far, far better off on the different bundlers such as the WalMart plan than in signing an expensive contract with Verizon or AT&T. Personally, I have a Verizon contract, but I have to make heavy use of the internet & other services in my phone. Otherwise I would drop my Verizon like a bad habit and pick up one of these other plans. They are much more affordable for the average cell user.

I have AT&T smart plan, I like it and prefer it over a contract with something like Verizon which I had and would never have again. It depends on how much you are going to use the services

I just bought the straight talk service and phone and absolutely love it! The reception is so clear and the LG is awesome to text on. I got the $45 plan powered by Verizon.

Has anyone tried using Straight Talk with their existing iPhone? I read it was possible, but not a simple process. I hate giving up my iPhone - I love it.

If you have an older iPhone (i.e. 3GS or older), you are probably stuck with whomever you have your current service. If your iPhone is newer, it has a SIM card that can be switched out to use another network. Here's the caveat: Most carriers will NOT unlock your iPhone to use a competitors network. For instance, I have a Verizon iPhone and they will not unlock it to use AT&T's network. They will, however, unlock the phone so I can use it internationally. If you go to Europe, you can have your iPhone unlocked and purchase a SIM card from T-Mobile or Vodaphone, etc. and have local service there...much cheaper than in the US. You also get unlimited data plan for the time you're there. The other alternative available is the "jailbreak" your iPhone. Be advised, it will void any warranty you have remaining and a law was just passed that makes it illegal. I would say procede with caution, in this regard. Best of luck, in your quest.... |
Thanks for the info

Can I ask what is the final bill you are paying for the WalMart $45 straight talk plan.....this would include taxes service fees all the extras? I assume these are foor "Smart Phones" voice and data.
If you have 2 phones is it just 2X that?? |
Jail breaking an iPhone isn't illegal, unlocking it is (as of today!)

We have been with Verizon since 2003 and have the Senior Plan, it's 200 minutes prime time and 300 minutes weekends for $30 a month, with tax it's $36.
We almost never use our cell phone, we carry it mostly for emergencies and ocassionally we will receive or make a call once a week. Our home phone is with Century Link has unlimited long distance included, so that has become our main phone. We have been thinking of switching to Consumer Cellular with AARP, is this the best deal or is there anything cheaper such as Straight Talk? We would like to keep our same cell number we've had since 1999 but knock our bill down to say $15 or $20 a month. . |
Tracfone
John W,
I have a Tracfone and I have triple minutes and I get the 50 minute plan ( that is 150 minutes a month for 10.00 a month ), thats sounds what you are looking for, any question's PM me. |
Do not let your Straight Talk phone run out past 3 months. I did and they cancelled my cim card number. I could not activate it with the service card.
They will send you out a new one. but it is after a along time on the phone. Oddly some times I let it go longer with no problems. |
We've been with Verizon for yrs...now have the I 5 and hate it!! dont like the sim card...sorry we got rid of the 4's

Regarding the Samsung Proclaim, when you are in range of wifi, does the phone use the wifi or the cell tower?

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...iL._SS400_.jpg It's 10 cents a minute, I can buy a $25 card (250 minutes) for 3 months or pay $100 for a year for a 1000 minutes. I was paying $36 a month with tax to Verizon and my last bill I used it a whole 5 minutes. I got my phone in two days and I'm already using it. I couldn't transfer my old number because the area code was from Maryland, but they gave me a real good telephone number. |

We have had great service every where except in my house in Hemingway My son has had excellent service. Only trouble I have had anywhere is my house. |
Check out Tracfone!
I use Tracfone—no monthly charge and minutes roll over as long as I don’t let the service time run out. Cost of minutes varies depending on the current promotion. I have a phone that includes TRIPLE minutes, meaning I pay for one and get three. I just signed up for the most recent promo—400 minutes plus bonus of 250 minutes, including one year of service, for $100 plus about $8 tax. The 400 tripled to 1,200 plus the bonus means 1,450 minutes for a cost of just under $.07/minute. Also includes international calling at the same usage cost, that is, one minute charge for one minute of call time.
Dividing these figures out, the cost of service per month is about $9/month ($108 divided by 12). I have a land line, so I use the cell phone when traveling and locally only when needed rather than for routine calling. Service works perfectly! I bought my brand new phone (LG 800) sealed in original Tracfone packaging for $23 including free shipping on ebay—touch screen unit that includes texting (which I don’t do) and camera (which I don’t use). See Brand New LG800g with Triple Minutes for Life Tracfone 616960023739 | eBay. Absolutely reliable seller. I will not shop Walmart under any circumstances unless desperate for something I need that I cannot find anywhere else. A whole other discussion thread…. |
