Big Snake in house
A big black snake came in for a visit today ! About 5 ft long and very fast.
I shooed him/her out only to find 2 more very smaller ones about 12in long. |

He obeyed? Was it the laundry room? Or.......??? Yikes. What if it had gone unnoticed by you and took up residence under your sofa or bed? Five feet is pretty long........with two babies of one foot each? Can they climb up onto furniture, etc.??? Thanks..... |
Where was this, and how did it get inside your home?

Are you located by a wetland or preserve area?
|
Good response to a "friendly" snake. Not poisonous, probably a Rat Snake or King Snake. You will not have small critters about if one of them is around.
|
Just please tell us if you left your door open, if it came into the garage part of your home, if the other snakes were near where this one entered.
Gamby. How do you think this snake got into your home? |
People need to learn that proximity to a wetland and the presence of snakes have nothing to do with each other.
|
Did one answer to the name of "Kay?" Did she slither away singing a Willlie Nelson medley? Was a divorce decree written on her shred skin?
|
Where did Gamby go? Don't you just hate it when people drop a bomb and then take off while you are asking questions? We are waiting with fingers tapping for more intel on this.......

many of us, maybe most of us that have screened porches leaves the doors open. That is one way they get in. If there is a hole/space the size of a pencil eraser, if their head fits they com in...spaces under bird cage doors....spaces at the end of garage doors, leaving garage doors open.
They won't stay long or they die as there is nothing in our habitat they really need or like (I suppose there could be 'something' ....but not for long). First reaction ....after the fear is to arm ones self and kill the intruder. Please try to resist that reaction......and just shoooo them out as it does work (can be a challenge but it works). btk |

OK now. I'm fine with blood and guts, little creatures like lizards, worms, catapillars and mice. Less fine with bats, spiders and palmetto bugs. But worrying about snakes under my bed may be more than I can take. Maybe Gampy found the "daddy" and passed out, had a stroke or entirely left TV.
Tell me this really RARELY happens in TV because I'm a little "shaky" right now. I want to move there by next summer, but this is the stuff of nightmares. |
Sounds like a friendly snake if you can shoo them out the door. Shortly after we retired we had one in our house---neighbor said it was a pigmy rattler---whatever--- killed it with my neighbors shovel while he cornered it with a 2x4. We never did figure how it got into the house.
|
it is pretty rare. If they get in is it not because the want to get in your house.
They arrived there accidently. btk |

I do not live in CT !
I am a full time res. of Florida. I did look up the snake and it is a "Southern black racer" I guess they were looking for water being it's been so dry. I think it came in through the garage into the laundry area . All it was trying to do was escape from me so there was no danger . Belle Aire area , Snakes do not have a preference as to villages; Food and water is where they will migrate to. A |
When I move in full time I am putting out a sign (I know, no signs allowed but I'm doing it anyway until someone calls me on it) and it's going to say No Snakes allowed! Ewwww. I hate the thought of it. I WANT to shoo them outside but I just don't expect to be that rational and have the snake sitting there while I try to compose myself. I think I might have to move in next to to BillieTK for that to be possible, or have him on speed dial. They move so fast and are pretty ucky in my estimation. If they come in through open garage doors perhaps I don't even want to open mine to take out the golf cart or car!!!!

I forgot to mention about a month ago I happened on another snake in the back yard; This one was brown in color less then a foot long, it just wandered off toward my neighbors house.
Snakes are part of nature and do not like to have encounters with their worst enemy (People) . As for the current snakes no one should be afraid of them they are just trying to survive and for the most part are harmless . They are more afraid of you then you are of them ( their life depends on escaping from you.) Oh ! we are in the Belle Aire area Super nice people and a quiet friendly neighborhood. Love it here ! |

With bugs, snakes and gators, one of the first items purchased for our CYV was this horizontal slider for $850 installed. Also it can be a deterrent for wondering strangers. Unlike the electric vertical sliders, when I'm working outside it's very easy to open and close as you go in and out since each 4' section slides separately. The electric types you'll most likely leave up while cutting the grass, washing the car, etc, which would provide no protection. Plus the fact these are half the price and there's no motor or moving parts to break.

My better half is defintely going to read this entire thread because she has a very bad habit of leaving the garage door/screen up and walk away. I try to keep an eye on this but I'm only human. We have been here for over 6 years and finally i found a snake in my garage...thought that would cure her it did not. I finally told her that if a snake visits our house because of her she can remove it.

OK, boys n girls, it is most likely a Black Racer. These snakes are VERY good and do their best to rid the area of rodents. They're called "racers" because of how fast they move. They generally grow no longer than 4 feet. My wife, while gardening, often "talked" with a regular visitor from the Black Racer family.

:spoken:We looked recently in
Bell aire at the ranch homes....hope to sell my house here in Kissimmee, Fl quick to join all the f/t frogs |
I saw many screens over the garages....I definitely will invest in one to. I dont have one here on our Kissimmee house

While living in New Mexico I came out of the house into the garage and stepped on a rattle snake that was snuggled up at the step down. Fortunately, for me not the snake,
I stepped on his neck so he could not turn and strike. Called the snake man and for $20 he came and emptied out my garage, found the critter and tried to nurse him back. Unfortunately he died of a broken neck, but folks in the desert southwest honor and protect rattle snakes because they usually do more harm than good. There is room for all of us on this earth so just move over and make room for our snake friends, who are not by the way slimy at all. |
I agree there's room for all of us but..............wait.........
I HATE SNAKES. P.S. Anyone is welcome to take my share. |
